NATIONAL PIGS-IN-A-BLANKET DAY
On April 24, observe National Pigs-in-a-Blanket Day with just a few ingredients.
Celebrated across the world, the term often refers to a variety of different dishes. In the United States, Pigs-in-a-Blanket are often hot dogs or sausages wrapped in biscuit or croissant dough and baked. Pigs-in-a-Blanket are generally served as an appetizer or as breakfast. However, it can be served any meal time!

(My first thought was 'what am I going to do with this one'!! Bear with me, followers!)
1. Typically served as an hors d'oeuvre, have you ever made or had a Pig-in-a-Blanket? Do you like Pigs-in-a-Blanket? It has been a long time, but they are okay. I would prefer them dipped in mustard instead of ketchup (in the picture). I have never made them.
2. Pigs-in-a-blanket are also known as devils on horseback, kilted sausages, and wiener winks. (Seriously.) Please make up another name for this fun little appetizer! How about Party Pigs!
3. In the UK, pigs-in-blankets are small sausages, or chipolatas wrapped up in bacon. Which country's version is most appealing to your taste buds? Sausage wrapped in bacon sounds much better to me, thank you very much.
4. The first written record of pigs-in-a-blanket occurs in Betty Crocker's Cooking for Kids in 1957. In this digital world, do you still have a favorite cookbook you use most of the time? Is there a recipe you can share with us from that cookbook? Well, I have two to mention, both church cookbooks. My mom's Methodist Church cookbook, because it has many of her recipes and my grandma's recipes; AND my former church's Resurrection Council of Catholic Women Cookbook. Here is a recipe from each!
I always use walnuts but pecans or even hazelnuts would be good, too.
Easy, different, and delicious!
This cornbread is dense, moist, sweet and delicious!
Use shortening, though, not oil.
I bake it in a 9x9 glass dish and it only takes about 45 minutes.
Test the middle with a knife or toothpick.
5. What is your favorite cooking show on TV? I really like Ree Drummond, the Pioneer Woman (Joe even watches!). We both also enjoy watching Chopped. Joe is a bit of a picky eater but I have found that I can say "This is one of Ree's recipes!" and he will try it and like it!! Shhhh.... don't say anything about this!
6. Tell us something random about your week, please! More doctor appointments this week. I got my skin cancer cut out yesterday. Glad that is done.
We MAY work in a trip over to Mazzaro's today. We like an imported (from Italy) pasta that they sell and I am running low. Joe will go right to the pastry counter. I will suggest a Friday instead because we can get through Tampa and across the Bay between rush hours. I am looking forward to my 3-day weekend coming up!!

ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Sending good thoughts for a full recovery.
ReplyDeleteI like watching Chopped, too. They are so creative.
The cornbread recipe I am gonna try...sounds delicious! Have a blessed rest of the week.
ReplyDeleteBoth of those recipes sound great. Funny about suggesting to Joe that a recipe comes from the pioneer woman and that makes him willing to try it!! Glad you took care of that skin cancer. Hope you have a great week. Thanks for the Medley, Terri.
ReplyDeleteParty Pigs... love it!! That corn bread sounds yummy!! Have a great Wednesday!
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you got the cancer removed, Terri - now, about those knees . . . :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I do like pigs in a blanket, but haven't had them in ages. No, never tried making them myself.
Have a wonderful day!
I love the Pioneer Woman! I've only watched the show a couple of times, but I have all of her cookbooks and cook from them often. Glad you got the skin cancer taken care of! Enjoy the day, Terri, and thanks for hosting us!
ReplyDeleteI love pigs in a blanket! My Hiatal Hernia does not like them so I only have them every now and then. I really like Ree Drummond as well. Ina Garten is another favorite tv cook.
ReplyDeleteI like Party Pigs! Clever! I've never made them, just eaten them. Ree Drummond cooks up some fine food and whatever works for you, works. Isn't it crazy how much time we spend these days on doctor appointments?
ReplyDeleteI think you did a great job today, as usual! Wednesday Medleys are fun!
I never cared much for the pig thingy.... A bit greasy and tended toward indigestion! But hey, if you can do, go for it.... :)
ReplyDeleteGood to know you got the skin cancer dealt with. Thanks for the questions and enjoy your long weekend.
ReplyDeleteNot a big pigs in a blanket fan but have made them in the past for kids etc. I dont use cookbooks because I dont like to cook. What comes out at our house Jim usually cooks when he can! LOL Glad the skin cancer is taken care of and heals nicely. Have a good Wednesday.
ReplyDeleteI would kill for a three day weekend! But I am thankful that it's already Wednesday. As always, thanks for hosting.
ReplyDeleteParty Pigs is so great!!! I'm with you … no ketchup. (That's just wrong, lol.) Gosh I wish I might pop over to Mazzaro's. Once is definitely not enough! I enjoyed seeing your olden cookbooks, Terri. You've given me an idea for a future post!
ReplyDeleteGet OUTTA HERE skin cancer!!! Glad that's taken care of.
ReplyDeleteChurch cook books are always the best. My mom buys them any time she sees one.
I love Pigs in a Blanket made with Crescent Rolls and served with ketchup, mustard, both or neither. I have taken Pigs in a Blanket to many a breakfast church social.
ReplyDeleteI have always told you that you and I are a lot alike. Now I see that Joe and Bob are too. He will also watch the Pioneer Woman with me and is game to try a recipe which he might be suspicious of, if I tell him it's Ree's!
ReplyDeletePigs in a Blanket are quite popular in our area. There are a lot of people with Dutch heritage around here and it is a standard thing that churches make for fund raisers.
I sure wish we were neighbors!
DeleteI love party pigs! That is super cute! Glad your skin cancer is gone!! WOOT! Now to heal. Loved your answers! Have a nice week!
