Thanks to Bev Sykes for today's (hard) questions! You can visit HERE to join in!!
Hi! I'm your host Bev Sykes of the blog "Funny the World". . Welcome to Sunday Stealing. This feature originated and published on WTIT: The Blog. Here we will steal all types of questions from every corner of the blogosphere. Our promise to you is that we will work hard to find the most interesting and intelligent questions. (Past hosts include: Our first - Judd Corizan, Mr. L, Kwizgiver and Bud) Cheers to all of us thieves!
This is a set of book questions I found a long time ago on A Striped Armchair, which had not posted since 2015.
1. Which book do you irrationally cringe away from reading, despite seeing only positive reviews? Oh gosh, Y'all are going to crucify me but I will never read Little Woman. I've tried.
2. If you could bring three characters to life for a social event (afternoon tea, a night of clubbing, perhaps a world cruise), who would they be and what would the event be? It would be an afternoon tea because I don't go clubbing and a world cruise sounds just awful, even with people I know! Most of the books I like have female characters who would probably not want to spend an afternoon at tea, but let's be silly and try: Arya Stark, Claire Fraser, Katniss Everdeen (Game of Thrones, Outlander & Hungar Games). Should be interesting.
3. You are told you can't die until you read the most boring novel on the planet. While this immortality is great for a while, eventually you realize it's past time to die. Which book would you expect to get you a nice grave? I had to look up boring novels because if I can't get past the first ten pages of any book, I cast it aside and promptly forget about it. This one sounds pretty awful:

Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov (1962)
What makes it a real snooze: Vladimir Nabokov was an intelligent man who loved word games and this book is essentially him enjoying his own private word game. It starts with a very long poem that is 999 lines long and then a story follows that somewhat describes the poem. Or maybe that doesn’t even remotely describe what the plot is because it more than likely doesn’t have a linear plot that is possible to describe. As you’re reading you may imagine Nabokov – the genius – entertaining himself with yet another hidden meaning while you – the normal person – are bored to tears. You’ll be quite happy to choose the pillow over staying up and reading more.
4. Which book have you pretended, or at least hinted, that you've read, when in fact you've been nowhere near it? I don't pretend like that, so none. People gasp when I confess I have never read most of the classics like "Little Women" and "Anne of Green Gables". Just not my 'thing'.
5. As an addition to the last question, has there been a book that you really thought you had read, only to realize when you read a review about it/go to 'reread' it that you haven't? Which book? Can't think of any. More than likely I might confuse reading a book with seeing the movie but I can't recall any right now. I usually read the book before I see the movie, anyway (and am most times disappointed).
6. You've been appointed Book Advisor to a VIP (who's not a big reader). What's the first book you'd recommend and why? Oh gosh. These questions are just a little silly. Is the VIP a man or woman. How old is s/he? I would ask him/her a few questions before I would recommend any book.
7. A good fairy comes and grants you one wish: you will have perfect reading comprehension in the foreign language of your choice. Which language do you go with? I'll just stick with English.
8. A mischievous fairy comes and says that you must choose one book that you will reread once a year for the rest of your life (you can read other books as well). Which book would you pick? Saying the Bible might sound like a cop-out, but I have read it through (or nearly through) every year since 2010 and intend to continue doing that, so there you have it. The Bible.
9. What's one bookish thing you 'discovered' from book blogging (maybe a new genre, or author, or new appreciation for cover art-anything)? Drawing a blank for this one. I'm just not bookish.
10. That good fairy is back for one final visit. Now, she's granting you your dream library! Describe it. Is everything leatherbound? Is it full of first edition hardcovers? Pristine trade paperbacks? Perhaps a few favorite authors have inscribed their works? Go ahead-let your imagination run free. I read for entertainment all the time, but my books are all on my Kindle Fire now. I don't want shelves full of books to dust and move around anymore. I used to belong to three book clubs and had books stuck everywhere in every room of the house. I packed them all up and donated them to my grandma's assisted living facility and never looked back. Sorry. Give this gift to someone who will appreciate it!! And I should say that I do have a couple of shelves full of art books, some autographed by the artist. Keepers that I happily dust and move around. I also remember being very attached to my books so I don't judge anyone who loves their books. I just don't anymore.
Thanks for your visit today! Joe and I are both feeling better but coughing and blowing and not fit to sit in church for an hour or so making those around us uncomfortable. I'm doing laundry today and just trying to take it easy. I put pork in the crock pot yesterday and we will be eating the pulled pork again today. I am cleaning out closets (just an hour or so each day) and have a pretty big pile of clothing to donate. Feels good to be getting that done.
Enjoy your day! Peace & hugs!! God bless!!
Wishing you a wonderful Sunday and better health!
ReplyDeleteI got rid of all my real books too. I have a Kindle but I get most of my e-books from the library so I don't own many even on my Kindle.
ReplyDeleteGlad you both are feeling better.
Wishing you and your husband good health.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
My books are on my Kindle too; hardback and paperback ones are long gone. Hope you and Joe continue to heal and feel better. That old cough tends to linger the longest. I am not going to church this morning either because I have a rash or something on the side of my face and neck.... Hope your Sunday is a good day.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope you get to feeling lots better soon. Sounds like you are working hard on your closets.
ReplyDeleteI am not much of a book person either really but I also did the meme.
Have a good Sunday.
Gee, I am trying to let go of old books little by little. Now I read only library books (most of the time), but still prefer a real book to a Kindle book. I am attached to some very old books that I love...some that my mother and I enjoyed sharing back and forth. I have read Little Women but prefer the movie with Katharine Hepburn as "Jo". I have read Anne of Green Gables because I am named after her (my middle name is Anne, and I have red hair..or used to). I do hope you and Joe will continue to try and take it easy and get over your colds/cough. I know you have to go to work, but praying it will be an easy week. Take care dear friend.
ReplyDeleteYou don't like Little Women and you don't want a library? Stick a knife in my heart! Just kidding...everyone has their own tastes. For me, books are the only thing I don't mind dusting.
ReplyDeleteI knew you would cast our friendship away when you read my comment about Little Women. Sorry Stacy. Perhaps I should try harder to get into it.... At one time (I'm older than you!!) I felt the same way about my books... and wouldn't even lend them out! I understand!!
Delete"A little silly" … yes! Honestly, I felt my IQ slip sliding away when I read these questions last night. Don't you ever wonder how some (boring) books ever make it through publication? Not unlike the Oscars, where the popular films languish by the wayside and something obscure takes home the statuette. Aside from a few autographed copies, my little library's contained on my Fire. (Makes it easier to delete when the going gets awkward!)
ReplyDeleteGlad you're feeling better! This week should be better for both of you. I've never read Little Women either.
ReplyDeleteThank you!! For you sweet words and for telling me you haven't read Little Women either!! Thank you!
DeleteI enjoyed reading your answers Terri. But not read Little Women? Shock horror! One of my favourite books as a child. Only joking of course, we all have different tastes and likes and dislikes. You know I love reading and will give most things a try but A Suitable Boy has been my nemesis. I've started it twice and struggled to keep track of the characters. One day!
ReplyDeleteMy subscription to your blog seems to be working perfectly now. Glad of it!
ReplyDeleteAs for all the bookie questions, I read a lot of self-help and cookbooks, and like you, the Bible is the one book I re-read regularly. Reading tends to make me sleepy, so I prefer to cross stitch.
I'm glad you and Joe are feeling better.
