Waiting for a Star to Fall
Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions!
Saturday 9: Waiting for a Star to Fall (1988)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) "Waiting for a Star to Fall" was literally inspired by a falling star. The singing/songwriting duo of Boy Meets Girl was at a big, outdoor concert and could have sworn they saw a falling star in the night sky. Have you ever seen a falling star? I have been blessed to see several falling stars!
2) They offered this song to Whitney Houston, who declined to record it. Whitney did have hits with two other songs they wrote: "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" and "How Will I Know?" What's your favorite Whitney song? She had such a beautiful voice. "I Will Always Love You". The Body Guard is one of my favorite movies.
3) Boy Meets Girl were George and Shannon, a husband-and-wife team originally from Seattle, WA. In 2016, Seattle was named America's most "bike-friendly city." Do you own a bike? Not anymore. We are looking for one of those adult tricycles though. I'm serious!
4) George and Shannon met for the first time at a wedding. She was a guest, he was in the band. Think of the last wedding present you bought. Was it from the bride and groom's registry? The groom is our nephew. We don't buy from registries. They got cash.
5) In 1988, when this song was popular, 98% of American homes had a TV set. Today, that figure has dipped to 96%, presumably because Millennials are watching more content online. What's the last video you watched online? Probably a video posted on Facebook. I don't watch movies on my computer when I have a big screen TV to watch in the living room.
6) In 1988 saw the introduction of one of the most memorable slogans of all time: "Just Do It." Without looking it up, do you know what brand "Just Do It" promotes? I think it is Nike.
7) In 1988, Sonny Bono went from entertainer to Republican politician when he was elected Mayor of PalmSprings. Have you ever met the mayor of your town? I actually know the last three mayors of Lakeland. Working at the art museum for 20+ years allowed me to meet and work with quite a few remarkable people.
8) Michael Douglas took home the Oscar in 1988 for his portrayal of Gordon Gekko in the movie Wall Street. The American Film Institute named Gekko one of the "top movie villains of all time." Do you think bad guys are as interesting as good guys? Bad guys are portrayed on the big screen as interesting but really aren't in the end. I'm quite happy with my funny and very interesting good guy!
9) Random question: Have you ever seen a photo of yourself naked? (Baby pictures don't count.) Oh my, NO! I avert my eyes in the mirror! LOL

Have you ever seen a photo of yourself naked?
ReplyDeleteI have never understood why people take selfies of themselves naked. Is it because they really fancy themselves. They look at the photo and say "Phoewr ... I really would like to make love to you?" By all means, they can look at themselves naked in the mirror. Preferably not a cracked one to add to their wrinkles.
God bless.
Good questions today. I loved Whitney Houston's voice and songs too. Seeing myself naked would scare me to death! Never met a mayor; have seen a falling star; I do watch videos online if it is something I am looking for or interested in and want to know more about it. I dont own a bike and couldnt ride it if I did! Have a happy Saturday.
ReplyDeleteTricycles look fun. Being short I'm not sure I could ride one comfortably though. Hope you both are feeling better.
ReplyDeleteOh I had to laugh at that last question...like you , I avoid the mirror these days.lol Having been a nurse, I think I have seen all kinds of bodies, male and female so the thrill is gone.:)
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! You make me laugh! So funny. Now Terri, I never heard that song here, but my first thought was to catch a falling star and put it in your pocket, save it for a rainy day!
ReplyDeleteWow, my comment wouldn't publish. I was also talking about "Catch a Falling Star and put it in your pocket" by Perry Como... I was singing that song to Hubby the other day. Let me see if this comment posts. The last one wouldn't.
ReplyDeleteInteresting...my comment published this time. Not sure what was going on before. I used the word "naked" in my comment regarding the last question. Let's see if it will take it again.
ReplyDeleteOkay, we're good. Not sure what was going on before. Great post, btw.
ReplyDelete#9 is rather off putting, isn't it? I agree, "I Will Always Love You" (and The Bodyguard) are two of my all-time favorites. And I'm convinced no-one, no-how will EVER perform the National Anthem like Whitney.
ReplyDeleteThose 3-wheel bike/trikes look like such fun!
A tricycle would be good, and fairly safe, exercise for this season of life. I hope you are able to find one.
ReplyDeleteOn another subject, I'm no longer getting email notifications of your blog posts. I even subscribed, again, but the notifications are not coming. Don't know if I did something to cause that, and if so, I don't know what it would have been. But I have you in the blog roll on my blog, so I easily find you that way, too.
You are the 3rd person to say they lost the email connection. I didn't do anything different. So sorry!! Maybe it will come back as quickly as it left. Thanks for letting me know!
DeleteA tricycle with a Battery Assist is what I have in mind when the old legs start to give out!! Hey, looks like I can post again!! :)
ReplyDeleteI've seen several falling stars too - so pretty!
ReplyDeleteI love the Whitney Houston version of I will always love you, but the original Dolly version is my favorite because it was as it was playing in the car while Bob and I were out on a date, that he first told me he loved me - saying "and I will always love you".. :)
