My dad's parents have both been gone many years now, but I have so many wonderful memories of my Granny & Pawpaw Kelly.
I don't know that this is their wedding photo, but I imagine that it is.
Granny & Pawpaw were farmers and worked hard. I have memories
of helping to gather eggs, of honey from an old tree, and
of using the outhouse because they didn't have an indoor toilet.
My Granny could cook! Oh, my goodness,
her fried chicken has never been surpassed by any I've had since.

This is the Kelly family. My dad on the left with the hat on,
then my Uncle Bill, Aunt Phyllis, Granny and Pawpaw.
This looks like a modern day photo booth set of pictures
but it is a lot older than any photo booth. My Pawpaw was quite dashing, I think!
Granny was quite the "diva" too, and I show these together because
she worked HARD on the farm. I think my dad took this photo of her in the chair.
The rocking chair she is sitting in now resides in my sister-in-law's home.
My folks went on vacation with them, to Lookout Mountain
in Tennessee. Pawpaw is holding me. Granny was quite fashionable
wearing those slacks back in the early 1950s!!
This was them at their 50th wedding anniversary.
Pawpaw committed suicide when he was 82 years old.
It was a huge shock, especially for Granny who had no idea until the police
knocked on the door after a passer-by reported the body in their garage which was
on a back alley. Granny was 80 a year later when she died peacefully in a nursing home.
And this is how I remember them the most.

Thanks for checking in!! I look forward to your Black & White Memories!!
Happy August (where has the summer gone?!) Peace & hugs!

I love seeing your old photos and boy, do I see your Granny in you! Wow...shocking and sad about your grandfather. I wonder how he ended up in that frame of mind at 82?
ReplyDeleteLove the pictures of your grandparents Terri. Wonderful memories, but sad about your grandfather. I am going to have to dig out some black and whites and join in.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a B/W photo to share today (no time right now to go searching) but I enjoyed yours and the descriptions. My children called my husband's father "Pawpaw," too, so that made me smile.
ReplyDeleteTeri, thank you for doing this. I hope I can join up later today. I enjoy reading your tales of family history and seeing the pics. Our ancestors worked so hard. I see you in that last pic of your Granny. That is so sad about your grandpa.
ReplyDeleteSorry. I meant to say PawPaw.
DeleteAnd also, I noticed him holding the phone, although at first I thought it was a microphone. He looks like a newscaster there.
DeleteThe old photos and memories, so special! They really did work so hard back then and I imagine the strain and stress people felt must have been so hard! Sad about your paw paw, that must have been so shocking.
ReplyDeleteThanx for sharing your memories.
ReplyDeleteGod bless you all.
Nice to see the old photos which gives us sweet old memories:)
ReplyDeleteI love looking at old pictures. Thanks for sharing yours with us and telling us about them.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing old pics. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
I am so sorry to read that about your grandfather, your poor grandmother...I can only imagine what she went through.
ReplyDeleteYeay … I love this, Terri! Yes, your PawPay and Granny were both 'lookers' … him so dashing and she a sausy flirt. I've no 'fun' pix of my own grandparents, but have often wondered what they were like, what they dreamed about, argued about … just stuff, you know?
ReplyDeleteIt seems the older I get the more I miss my grandparents. Not sure why that is but it is a fact.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness... that's a sad end for your pappaw. I'm sure there was a story never told there. Bless his soul.
ReplyDeleteHe was quite dashing.
That rocking chair pic... man, you can see the hard work on her face.
I just always love black & white pics - the life lived in them.
They both were very beautiful people in their younger days.
ReplyDeleteYour grandfather - - - so sorry about the way it ended. We have no clue what was in his mind - - - if it was clear or not. So sad for those left behind.
You have some great memories of them both!
No note or a good-bye to Granny. He just went out to the garden, as usual first thing in the mornings. She had no idea. The doctor said he had hardening of the arteries and may not have known what he was doing. He hung himself, so he had to work at it. We were all stunned.
DeleteI sure enjoy old pictures and family history. Your grandparents were both very attractive, your grandfather's suicide is very sad. I'm sorry I didn't link up today but I'll be here next week!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a neat idea. Loved seeing and hearing about your grandparents.
ReplyDeleteWhat sweet memories, Terri! I so loved my grandparents but never got to see them as much as I would have liked. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteI loved these so much, Terri! You look like your grandmother in that last picture you posted. She was so young and beautiful in that first picture. And I know just how she was feeling when she was sitting in that rocker, haha!!
ReplyDeleteSo very sad about your grandfather's death. How old were you? And did you live in that area anymore when that took place?
I was married and in my 20s, living about 300 miles away.
DeleteYour granny and Pawpaw were a good looking pair. I can see you in your granny.
ReplyDeleteVery sad about your Pawpaw though, such a hard thing for those left behind. I have to think that perhaps there was some dementia involved at that age, and considering your granny had no idea. Thanks for sharing!
I loved looking at your grandparents' photos! But what a sad end to his story. The last photo of them reminds me of the one of my grandparents. I'll have to see if I can dig up old black and whites. Great idea for a meme, Terri!
ReplyDeleteTerri, I love that you are doing this! A couple years ago, I hosted a similar meme for a month---I called it Trip to the Past Tuesday. There wasn't much interest, so I abandoned the idea. But I will definitely link up with you here.
ReplyDeleteThese are great photos! And such beautiful memories. Sad, though, about Grandpa committing suicide.
You really look like your grandma!!
Blessings,
Patti
