Lakeland is full of excitement this week!! Disney is here filming a movie and our Southgate Shopping Center is the center of attention again. That is where Edward Scissorhands was (partially) filmed 20 years ago. Check out this link from our local newspaper with a video:
Here is a news article about it: One and Only Ivan
I went to our Publix there two days ago and took these photos...
I couldn't get closer unless I got out of the car. There were barricades to keep us from getting too close. Please click on the photos to see them in more detail. The movie crew has put new signs on storefronts There is a Bowl a Rama, where Babe's Dress Shop is, and a Boardwalk Bargains where part of the Japanese Steak House is. It has sure been fun to watch the transformation and there are also a bunch of classic cars parked everywhere. I am not familiar with the book the movie is based on but understand it is a favorite for little ones (and adults too). I imagine we will go see it when it is released!
My friend, Shelley, was there with her son last night and posted this
picture on Facebook. She was in a good spot!!
There have been quite a few (10-12) movies filmed HERE over the years, including a KFC commercial with M.C. Hammer (remember him) in 1992. HERE is the link for the commercial.
Back in the 50s, Esther Williams starred in Easy To Love, which was filmed at Cypress Gardens and she swam in the swimming pool shaped like the state of Florida.
I just love our city and county!! Can you tell?
Thanks for stopping by!! Thanks to Deb for hosting us on Fridays!! Peace & hugs!!

Hey ... you're famous ... you're in the movies.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
That is very cool! I have seen a few movies being filmed here in Philly over the years. It's always fun to watch.
ReplyDeleteKool! Seems you live in the perfect area that movie makers love too! Hugs
ReplyDeleteMovies seem so romantic yet it is nothing but a lot of hard work for so many. Trading places was filmed in Phila. They were filming at a place I passed on the way to work and I was quite close. At the end of the day, the same thing was still being filmed! In the movie itself, it was all of about 10 seconds..a cold damp day with lots of extras.
ReplyDeleteThat is so neat!! I never knew Lakeland was such a movie mecca filming place...I'll have to check those things out. What fun to watch. Meanwhile, where do you go to get your groceries?
ReplyDeleteWe pop in through another entrance, closer to Publix, where we don't have to drive around barricades.
DeleteIt must be fun to watch a movie being made, I wonder just how much is lift on the cutting room floor these days? Where do you shop if the shopping center is closed for movie making? I ask because we are out in the country, and if the store is closed, we have some traveling to do to get to an open store.
ReplyDeleteThe grocery and hardware stores are open... just finding a parking spot with so much blocked off if the problem. I think the dress shop is still open for business too... just a different approach to the door is necessary.
DeleteI've never seen a movie being made. How cool!
ReplyDeleteThat is so amazing...and exciting! I'm going to look at some of the links you gave. It's so fascinating! Enjoy your day. Stay cool!
ReplyDeleteThey certainly seem to be taking over. Hope it isn't causing too much disruption to locals.
ReplyDeleteWow!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea!!!!
Thanks for sharing that.
I will remember this when we see the movie!!!
That is very exciting. On Golden Pond was filmed a few miles from us on Squam lake many years ago. I loved Kathern Hepburn in it. hugs, lj
ReplyDeleteYour post is such fun - reincarnation of a strip mall into a movieland set.
ReplyDeleteHow exciting for y'all! Have you ever considered being an 'extra'? A gal I knew in Arizona did that … actually her whole family in a Field of Dreams … but she said it was LOTS of sit-around-and-wait, followed by more sit-around-and-wait,
ReplyDeleteNo... doesn't interest me at all, and I have heard that it wastes a day (or more) because of how long it all takes.
DeleteHow cool to have a movie being filmed near you. We’ve a at least 3 filmed in our town too. Fun stuff.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun, Terri! I have been in Lakeland many times over the years! The comment thing "seems" to be working at this point in time. Guess we will see how it shakes out. Crazy that we have to jump through all these hoops!
ReplyDeleteThat is so cool! I can see why you're proud. I hope the movie does well. I'll watch it and say "that's my friend Terri's mall!"
ReplyDeleteI think its great that you love your area so much.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing it with us.
Kimberly Cole from Lakeland has a nice blog of photos of the area as well.

It's exciting to have a movie/show filmed in your backyard, Terri. Way back when "Heat of the Night" was a popular television show, they filmed it largely in Oxford, GA, where my parents were living at the time, and Mom still does. I recall getting within 10 feet of Carroll O'Connor when they were filming right down the street! He even gave me a smile and a nod. :) Great memory!
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
It's always a bit exciting to have filming going on. I too live in a neighbourhood where lots of movies are shot but thankfully we are not blocked off from passing right by!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! A movie was filmed in Knoxville last year with Burt Reynolds! It's been released, but I'm picky about the movies I see! Thanks for always being so faithful to link up each week. I'm so sorry to be so late to visit, though. 💜
ReplyDeleteThat is so exciting! I remember when we were all astir in Lancaster County, PA when they were filming "Witness" starring Harrison Ford!
