A Saturday 9 with Harry Chapin...

Cat's in the Cradle

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Cat's in the Cradle (1974)

This song was chosen in honor of Father's Day. Hear it here.

1) This song began as a poem, written by Harry's wife Sandy before the couple even met. Have you ever tried your hand at writing poetry?  Years ago I tried writing a few but they weren't that good and I did not keep them. The only one I really remember was written right after my divorce when I was feeling kind of low:

I walked along the beach today
and found a lonely shell,
scratched by seas and sands of time.
I too am a lonely shell.
Hold me close and you can hear
the ocean roar.

2) The lyrics include a reference to "The Man in the Moon." The original Mother Goose rhyme ends: "It's time for the children on earth to think about getting to bed." Do you remember what time your childhood bedtime was?  When I was a senior in high school, I was still supposed to be in bed by 10:00 pm.  Younger was probably 8:00 or 8:30.  I don't really remember. It was a long time ago! LOL

3)  When did you go to bed last night?  It was a little before 11:00.

4) In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed the proclamation that made Father's Day a holiday on the third Sunday in June. Can you name all 45 Presidents? (No, you don't have to list them here.) No, I can't and don't think I ever knew them all by heart.

5) Since Sam's father is particular about his Cole Haan loafers, her Father's Day present to him is always a DSW gift card. Who on your gift list is especially easy to buy for?  All the grandkids are easy now because we do Visa or Mastercard gift cards.

6) Sam's father is a voracious reader. So much so that the local librarian knows him on sight and by name. When did you last visit your neighborhood library?  It has been years. I don't even have a library card anymore. My Kindle makes it too easy.

7) Back when Sam was in high school, her father gave her driving lessons. Do you consider yourself a good driver?  Yes.

8) He is a stickler about car maintenance and reminds Sam to check her car's air filter regularly because a dirty air filter can reduce mileage. Share your own car maintenance tip.  Keep your oil changed every 3,000 miles. Clean oil and a clean air filter make a huge difference if you plan to keep your car for 10-12 years, like I always do.

9) Whenever he fills up the car, Sam's father also stocks up on his favorite candy: LifeSavers. So Sam is celebrating Father's Day by giving everyone a roll. Would you prefer Wild Cherry, Butter Rum, Winter Green or Peppermint?  Butter Rum would be lovely!

  1. Poem:

    Don’t worry if your job’s a joke
    And your successes few;
    Remember that the mighty oak
Was once a nut like you!

    God bless.

  3. Teri, that is a great poem! Do you find yourself buying more books on Kindle that you don't get around to reading? That is my experience and I'm trying hard to add the books to wish list instead of buying. Now I am actually reading what I buy. Our kids are now asking for gift cards, too.

    1. Yes, I have a HUGE library on my Kindle and I doubt I will ever get them all read. My only thought is that I don't "buy" them unless I think I will really enjoy reading them.

  4. Terri, your poem is lovely. I have no talent what so ever in that area. I also had no idea that Fathers Day only dated back to 1965...of course I was only ten years old that year so I do not remember that event.lol

  5. Your poem is wonderful, Terri! I can certainly identify with feeling, "scratched by seas and sands of time."

Wanna arm-wrestle for the last butter-rum? LOL.

  6. I did enjoy your poem, Terri. Maybe you should hone that talent?
    Happy Saturday!

  7. I am impressed by your poem!
I never would have thought that Fathers Day only started in 1966!

  8. Great answer for #5 (grandkid gifts). We, too, give $$ because we have 11 grands living out of town and it's just too hard to keep up with what they really want and/or need. I'm glad we're not alone on that.
