A Mother's Day Saturday 9...

Mother and Child Reunion

From our Hostess, Sam:  Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Mother and Child Reunion (1972)

Unfamiliar with this week's song? Hear it here.

1) The title of this song, "Mother and Child Reunion," came from a dish Paul Simon had at a Chinese restaurant. "Mother and Child Reunion" was chicken and egg drop soup. When did you last eat chicken?  Last Sunday, we had Helen & Cheryl to dinner and I served pulled chicken.

2) Paul Simon's mother, Belle, was an English teacher Monday through Friday and then gave piano lessons on the weekends. Have you ever worked more than one job?
Yes.  I worked at a full-time job M-F (at the American Red Cross Blood Services) and on Saturday and Sunday, I was an activity coordinator at a senior citizen day-care.  We fed them lunch and had to plan activities to keep them interested and active. I also had to do paperwork for them.  I met Joe while working seven days a week.  He visited us there now and then and the ladies liked seeing him! LOL  After about six/eight months of seven days a week, I had to scream UNCLE and resigned the weekend job. When you wake up in the morning and don't know what day it is or which job you have to go to, it's time to change something!  AND I wanted to spend more time with the man I was falling in love with!  We celebrated our 33rd anniversary yesterday!

3) Mother Winters taught Sam to always dispose of the dry cleaning bag, as storing clothes in the bag may discolor the fabric. Do you have any useful household hints to pass along?
Vinegar is the best cleaner for surfaces, including windows (but we all know this).

4) Have you put away your winter clothes yet?  We DO have long-sleeved blouses and sweaters that get put away in March and don't come out again until late November or December.  This IS Central Florida.

5) Flowers and plants are popular on Mother's Day. How is your yard or garden? Is it green and/or blooming?  The grass is green. I don't do gardening or plant flowers. I have a brown thumb.  Flowers in the house get eaten or knocked over by the cats. If I get them, they go up high on a shelf where no one can really enjoy them. Sigh.  I'd rather they be left growing in a garden somewhere.

6) In the 1600's, the British began celebrating "Mothering Sunday." Children presented flowers to their mothers after Sunday service. When did you last place flowers in a vase?  Just yesterday.  Where they store-bought, or picked from someone's garden?  I received flowers from our son and his lady-love for Mother's Day.  They are beautiful multi-colored tulips.  I love the gesture and cherish that they did that for me... but they are in the vase on a high shelf, out of the reach of the cats and where I can only see them when passing and looking up. But they make me smile!!

7) The German word for "mother" is "mutter." What other German words do you know? I can count to ten in German. Not sure why I learned to do that, but it has always stuck with me.

8) When Sam was a teen, her mother used to scold her for monopolizing the family landline. With the advent of cell phones, do you think parents and children still clash over telephone etiquette?
I can't imagine that they don't, but I really have no experience with that.

9) To celebrate Mother's Day, Sam is giving away her mother's favorite, Hershey Bars! Would you prefer classic milk chocolate, dark chocolate or milk chocolate with almonds?  I love all three, but especially the milk chocolate with almonds.

Thanks to our hostess, Sam Winters, for this week's Saturday 9!  You can find her HERE and join in!  Happy Mother's Day to all and thanks for peeking in today!  Peace & hugs!

  3. As I was reading your blog post, I had white vinegar running through my dishwasher. I do this once a month to reduce mineral build-up.

Happy Mother's Day to you, Terri! You took on a challenge, raising two boys as you did. They both turned out well.

  4. Funny about the counting to 10 in German. My grandmother had a stroke that left her paralyzed on one side and unable to speak for the last 11 years of her life, but for some reason she was always able to count to 10 in German, something my dad had taught her after coming home from the army.

  6. I recently discovered there was but a smidgen of vinegar left. How could that be? ... Unacceptable! Crazy, but I love it, too.

My paternal grandmother used to read to me in German, but I'd be hard pressed to remember a single phrase, much less pronounce it!

  7. Happy Mother's Day to a good friend. Relating to two friends above, white vinegar is good for so many things....I use some in my laundry and it makes the clothes smell wonderful.

  9. I think parents still clash with teens about telephones because they don't every put them down!
I usually agree with you, but you have the chocolate thing wrong. Dark chocolate is the best! :)
