Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 323
1. What pets did you have while growing up? We had a dog (and later, cats too). Tell us a little something about them. Happy was our little black mixed-breed dog. She was a puppy and my brother was only two (making me 6). His favorite word to say over and over was 'hap hap happy' so that is what we named her...Happy. We had her for 10-11 years or so. I don't have a photo of her. Wish I did. :(
2. What is one thing you absolutely must accomplish today? There is absolutely nothing I need to accomplish today, other than posting this Hodgepodge! Retirement is so great!
3. Where were you ten years ago? September 2007 puts me right here in Lakeland, FL. What were you doing there? We were a few months home from our once-in-a-lifetime trip to Italy, I was working at the Museum and Joe still had his accounting clients while working as the accountant at our church. Life was good. Life is still good!
4. September 26th is National Dumpling Day. Did you celebrate? Nope. Didn't even know about it. Apple dumpling, xiao long bao (steamed Chinese dumpling), chicken and dumplings, pierogi, matzoh balls, or gnocchi...which dumpling on this list would be your dumpling of choice? I like gnocchi well enough but would be dancing a jig if I could have a plate full of my mom's chicken and dumplings again. Have you ever made homemade dumplings of any kind? I have made gnocchi, apple dumplings, and I have made chicken and dumplings (which were not as good as my mom's).
5. 'There are two kinds of adventurers: those who go truly hoping to find an adventure and those who go secretly hoping they don't.' William Trogdon
So which kind are you? I was more adventurous when I was younger. Now, I still enjoy a spur-of-the-moment road trip, which Joe and I call an adventure. I don't want to run out of gas or lose my GPS connection, however, so secretly hoping I don't, I guess!
6. Insert your own random thought here. I'm ending month two of my retirement and it still feels like a vacation to me! No alarm clocks most mornings and nothing stressful on the calendar. I do want to begin participating in things at our clubhouse and meeting more of our neighbors. I also want to volunteer a few hours a week, probably with VISTE, but I'm feeling selfish for not wanting to start putting things on the calendar just yet. I am enjoying my time with Joe, even when it is just watching TV. I'm thinking perhaps after the holidays and when we turn the calendar to 2018 I might start fidgeting a bit. Or not. (Smiling.)
For my prayer warrior friends, my friend Gregory came through the surgery okay, but instead of a couple of hours and laparoscopy, the surgery lasted about six hours and they had to open him up. (Surgery was to repair a previous hernia surgery that went very bad.) His dad called me Tuesday night, around 9:30, to let us know he had just gotten to his room and would now be in for 5-6 days instead of 3. The doctor told them how bad it was and that it was no wonder he had been in such pain. I had an email from Gregory yesterday telling me he was ok, but in lots of pain and didn't really want any visitors for a couple of days. Prayers for healing will be appreciated! Thanks!
Thanks for stopping by today!! Peace & hugs!

I loved my Mother's chicken and dumplings! Prayers for Gregory's complete healing. Happy Wednesday!
ReplyDeleteMy Mother in Law made the best chicken and dumplings, and I miss her cooking. I make them from time to time, but they just arent the same. Thankful your friend made it thru the surgery and prayers for continued healing and less pain. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteMy mom didn't make dumplings but she made what she called chicken pot pie but it wasn't a pie. It was dough rolled thin + flat and cut into squares then boiled in chicken broth. Must have been a local thing where she grew up cause in NJ where I grew up nobody ever heard of it. lol
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
I am so glad you are enjoying your retirement Terri. So glad Gregory got that problem fixed...prayers for an uneventful recovery. And Chicken and Dumplings....that will be served in Heaven I am sure!!
ReplyDeleteMy mother made the best dumplings.. I have tried several times without much success so have given up..
ReplyDeleteTeri, I think you should enjoy your retirement with Joe and not jump into anything just yet. I don't think that is selfish, I think it is wisdom to just rest from your labors. Then later, you will get involved because you're not a sit around and do nothing person! Happy Wednesday! Loved the nap hap Happy dog story.
ReplyDeleteLove your answers to #2 and #3, you sound so happy!
ReplyDeleteI will keep Gregory in my prayers.
You definitely sound happy and relaxed. Sorry to hear your friend had such a rough time. I hope he makes a good recovery.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you're enjoying retirement! You've earned it. Don't be in a hurry to commit your time :)
ReplyDeleteEd and I love a good road trip, although ours are usually day trips because of our animal obligations.
So glad your friend came through his surgery. Maybe things will get better for him, soon. I'll add him to my prayer list.

Oh, those chicken and dumplings do sound good. My mother in law made good ones too...she made the southern style flat dumplings (rolled out), and my mother made the northern style fluffy dumplings. Both were wonderful. I'd take either one right now. May have to go to Cracker Barrel! LOL. So glad you are enjoying your retirement. I know...I sometimes feel guilty for not doing anything in particular...but then I think, why not? I've worked my whole life....I deserve some time to just sit here and do nothing important. But I do get antsy and want to do some kind of "projects". Waiting for the weather to cool off before I start anything new. Praying for your friend to heal and for the pain to be relieved. God bless you...enjoy your days!!!
ReplyDeletePam, I like the 'northern' fluffy dumplings best. They don't make them like that here in the south. I refer to the flat rolled-out ones here as noodles. They will never be dumplings to me!
DeleteI do love chicken and dumplings but what about apple dumplings? How do you make those? Are they the same as the ones for chicken and dumplings? I really want to try some. Just take your time about filling that calendar. Enjoy relaxing for a bit. Good news about your friend!
ReplyDeletePam, there are lots of different ways to make apple dumplings, but here is one recipe I found: http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/quick-apple-dumplings
DeleteWe always poured milk over them AND added some whipped cream!
I hope your friend recovers well. I occasionally order chicken and dumplings if we stop at Cracker Barrel. Never tried to make them myself because I really don't need to be eating dumplings! : )
ReplyDeleteI love that you are enjoying retirement so much!
ReplyDeleteGlad Gregory is doing ok, and praying he heals quickly.
It's great that you are enjoying your retirement so much and content to just "be" for now. I hear of so many who have a hard time adjusting.
ReplyDeleteSure hope your friend recovers quickly...will be praying for him!
Thanks for the Gregory update! As a 'momma' myself, I know his parents appreciate y'all so much.
ReplyDeleteJust my 2-cents, but I think it's wise you wait until after the holidays to dive into another commitment. You've worked so hard for so long ... you deserve this respite.
Enjoyed your answers.

Cute story about happy. I have never made a dumpling so good for you. And I really feel your happiness upon retiring. :)
