Ballad of Gilligan's Island
Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme! Saturday 9: Ballad of Gilligan's Island (1964)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) This is about the fateful cruise of the S.S. Minnow. If you had a boat, what would christen it? CPA JOE (there is a cute story to that one I may tell someday)
2) "No phone! No lights! No motorcar! Not a single luxury!" To Sam, those sound more like everyday essentials than luxuries. If you were shipwrecked with the gang, what standard amenity would you miss the most? A grocery store and/or a restaurant!! (LOL)
3) The uncharted isle was in the Pacific, near Hawaii. Have you ever been to our 50th state? No. Not on my bucket list.
4) Natalie Schafer, who played Mrs. Howell, refused to divulge her age. Are you honest about how old you are? Yep. Or do you fudge it? I'm so happy to have made it this far, I shout it out!! I'll be 65 next month, incase you have missed previous shoutings!
5) Gilligan's Island featured many dream sequences. (Like the one where Gilligan dozes off and dreams that he's Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk.) Have you had any vivid dreams lately? I rarely remember even a snippet of a dream. I know I've been dreaming, but have no idea about what.
6) The pilot was filmed in November, 1963, in Honolulu. The cast and crew were actually onset when they learned of President Kennedy's assassination.* Because on location filming was so expensive, they couldn't afford to take any time off. Tell us about a time when you had to work, even though your heart and head weren't in it. Two times...when the Challenger blew up and when 9/11 happened. I just wanted to go home. I was in Jr. High when President Kennedy was assassinated and we were told to go home (early).
7) During the show's run, Mary Ann (Dawn Wells) was the clear fan favorite, receiving twice as many love letters as Ginger (Tina Louise). Have you ever written a fan letter (or posted a fan tweet or Facebook post)? Nope. Though I have favorite actors/actresses, for the most part (speaking generally), I find those in Hollywood pretentious and somewhat ignorant. I wouldn't want to deal with their egos.
8) Sam chose this week's song because it was going through her head, over and over again! Tell us a song that burrows into your head and stays there. It just doesn't happen to me. Sorry.
9) Random question: You went to a discount store and got an amazing bargain -- a pair of dress shoes for just $4.99. You go to a formal event and someone compliments you on those great shoes and asks where you got them. Do you tell the truth? Absolutely. The place and the price most likely. I love a good bargain!
*That's why, in the credits for the black and white seasons, the flags are at half-staff when The Minnow leaves the harbor. Wow!! Great trivia answer!
Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!
Thanks for checking in today!! I sure appreciate your visits and comments. Peace & hugs!

Greatttttttttttt singing the theme song now, giggling. If we ever would get a boat again, I would have to name her Rum Runner, I just want to be a pirate and run rum. {{fits of giggles}}
ReplyDeleteHave a beautiful day friend.
A tropical island sounds so nice. Great answers!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend!
I like your answer to #4. So many of my friends have health problems, financial problems, (adult) kid problems, sick/dying parent problems ... This is a much more stressful age than I anticipated. We should be proud of ourselves that we're still up and at 'em.
ReplyDeleteI grew up with that show, so, the theme is pretty well embedded into my squishy brain. It was just mindless fun. We did have a boat. I dubbed it "Dawg Daze" because we're both dog people. The only thing I would miss is my daily medications that keep me above ground. If I could live without them and could still have Steve (husband) with me, I would definitely be living on a deserted island.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed your answers. ~:)
Playing along with your meme today, my answers:
ReplyDelete1. Visitation. We had an assistant pastor years ago who used to leave the office to go on visitation. Turns out he was taking the afternoon off to go sailing.
2. bathrooms and grocery store.
3. No.
4. Yes, I tell my age but I still thinks it’s rude for children to ask.
5. All the time, but like you, I seldom remember them.
6. After being a stay-at-home housewife for many years, I took a receptionist job at a radio station and had to work on Christmas Eve. That was very odd and I didn’t like it.
7. Fan letter, yes, but decades ago. I don’t remember who I sent it to. Maybe Annette Funicello.
8. Lots of songs — I love music.
9. Yes, I like to share thrifty information.
I have all three seasons of Gilligan on DVD. It was my favorite show as a child and I always wanted to be Mary Ann.
ReplyDeleteI was at work when the Challenger exploded. We were allowed to have a tv in bookkeeping, only to be used for special occasions. We were all watching when it happened, it was awful. Had a hard time getting any work done that day. Hope you your weekend!!
ReplyDeleteBoth the times you mentioned, work just stopped where I was during those times. We all gathered around the TV to watch in shock. You are a lucky lady to not get songs stuck in your brain. And you are so right about celebrities and their egos.
ReplyDeleteGilligan was always a good show to watch...decent! I too am thankful to have made it my age and gladly tell it to anyone that asks...75! The price of something isnt a biggie to me, but the item is, and I will happily share it with anyone. Happy Saturday!
ReplyDeleteGilligan's Island. Wow. Haven't thought of that one for a while. And now I'm thinking of other crazy shows from that era. LOL Have a wonderful weekend!
ReplyDeleteBoy, I can sure identify with your answer to #4. (Me? A little surprised, and crazy grateful!)
ReplyDeleteBoth when Challenger exploded and on 9/11, I was working as an assistant at small CPA firms (in Abilene and Clearwater, respectively). Thankfully, on both occasions we were able to suspend operations and express our feelings. I pray something like this will never befall our Nation again, but I miss that camaraderie.
PS - Neat piece of trivia about Gilligan's early episodes.
Loved Gilligan.... I too agree with your answer to #7. Hugs, LJ
ReplyDeleteI always enjoyed that show. I never knew the part about the flags at half mast. I agree with your #7 answer too!
