Saturday:9 Battle Hymn of the Republic...

Battle Hymn of the Republic

Saturday 9: Battle Hymn of the Republic
(From the archives)

Memorial Day was introduced to honor the men and women who died while serving the in the United States Armed Forces. We want to make sure that message is not forgotten this weekend.

1) This recording was made live at St. Patrick's Cathedral, during Sen. Robert Kennedy's funeral. (Hear it here.) While both of Bobby's older brothers were decorated war heroes, he served too -- enlisting in the Navy in 1943. Are you a veteran? Are there veterans in your family? (We are grateful and want to hear about it.)  No, I am not a veteran but my husband is and my dad was.

2) Memorial Day also kicks off the summer season. What's your favorite picnic food?  Sweet watermelon.

3) Name a scent that reminds you of someone special in your life.  Lilacs blooming in my childhood backyard reminds me of my folks and wonderful summer picnics in our backyard.

4) When was the last time you had your hair cut or trimmed?  Two weeks ago.

5) Crazy Sam runs on Dunkin'. Are you loyal to a particular brand of coffee?  No, but I do like Dunkin' coffee (don't care for Starbucks).

6) If money was no object, what home improvement would you like to make this summer?  A new kitchen.

7) What was the last thing you bought purely for your own enjoyment?  A delicious seafood dinner, just last night!

8) When was the last time you rode a bike?  When I was 33 years old, on the boardwalk in Atlantic City.

9) Sam worries that many of her song selections reflect her decidedly Baby Boomer sensibilities. Is there a song or a performer that you'd like to see featured in a Saturday 9 this summer?  I'm a Baby Boomer too and love Sam's picks.  Partial to the Rolling Stones and Three Dog Night though!!  :)

In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend.

  1. Good answers as always. I prefer Dunkin to Starbucks too! Have you ever tried Community Coffee? It is served at the Broken Egg Restaurant and there are K-cups too. I am having my first cup right now! Have a good Saturday.

  4. I must confess I don't always like the artist chosen, but who says we all have to have the same tastes? If I had to choose an all-time favourite, I'd probably go with Freddy Mercury and Queen. I think I've mentioned before that when I go to the US, I prefer a fair trade brand over Starbuck's. Even though we have Starbuck's (and McDonald's and Burger King, Subway and maybe more), I never go to those places.

This I know I've mentioned before: my 93-year old uncle is a WWII veteran, spending most of his time in the war in a German POW camp. One of my brothers was in the Navy during the Vietnam war, but he luckily spent the time in the Mediterranean.

Lucky everyone who has a long weekend. Hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable one.

    1. I don't always like the artist either, but I usually enjoy the questions. The artist really doesn't matter.
