A Hodgepodge-less Wednesday...

Our usual Wednesday meme-master, Joyce, is off doing wedding things with her daughter this week. I think we can certainly understand and give her a pass (or two or twelve!) during this extra special time for a mother and daughter.  (Joyce - we do look forward to hearing all about it, though!)

I have been writing about all the work we have decided to get done on the outside of the house.  It is time to paint (20 years since the last time) and the landscaping (or lack thereof) is so sad, it really has looked like no one cares. We have a lawn service, and he mows and trims, but that is all.  We planted bushes years ago...(and I forgot to get before photos), so will show you this one. Note, however, that the bushes were all twice as high as in this photo.

Bushes, and nothing else.  Sad. But I hate yard work, and Joe just can't do it with his allergies and asthma (and heart disease).  DeWayne came today and got all the bushes pulled out, from all around the house. We had a crazy-gone-wild fern on the side of the house, near the air-conditioning unit and the pool pump. He took it out, too.  Scared up some black racers (non-poisonous snakes), and one of the cats brought one in. Joe found them playing with it in the kitchen and had to grab it and take it back outside. We haven't had one of those in the house in a long time. Hoping it was just the one! LOL  They are very small (babies - the ones that get in, anyway) and are more scared of us than we are of them.  It's Florida.

The painter (Don) will have it much easier this weekend.  We are keeping the same basic colors. Dark green trim and a very light green base.

Joe talked to DeWayne about what we should plant, to spruce things up some. He has some good suggestions, which include having him come by once a month and take care of the beds for us. If he isn't too expensive, I think we'll let him work some magic for us. Our neighbors will be happy. I think we have the ugliest yard in the neighborhood.  I just don't want to have to do anything with it.

Sam, the handyman, fixed the fascia board on the side of the house, and also helped Joe put a new backing on the attic pull-down stairs that are in the garage.  I couldn't believe how much they all got done today, in only about four hours time. Wow.

We are so blessed to have found these men who are helping us. Our yard service is actually an art teacher in our public school system. He teaches some of our summer art camp classes at the Museum. He has a yard service "on the side" that he works after school and on weekends. Our handyman, Sam, is a friend of one of Joe's clients. He is retired from a pool construction company and is the one who put new screening around our pool last spring (I blogged about it). He can do all kinds of work and says his wife is happy to have him out of the house. Don, the painter, has his own painting business "one the side" but works full time as a painter for one of the bigger home construction companies here in our county. He is the nephew-in-law of friends of ours and they told us about him (he did our two bedrooms for us last Spring).  DeWayne is the fiance of my friend Dawn, who does my facials. He just started the landscaping business a couple of years ago, and is starting to build a good clientele. He doesn't mow, he just takes care of plants and beds. They all do good work, are honest and don't charge like big companies would.  It really does pay to know someone who knows someone!

So that was Joe's day....mine was spent working on a huge project I've been tasked with. Teasing out numbers and hoping four years' of data will give us some answers about fund-raising trends. I think I may get it finished tomorrow. Hallelujah!!

I have started a private Pinterest board, with recipes for Thanksgiving dinner. I like that we can do private boards now.  I think I have everything but a bread selection. I may just get frozen bread dough at the grocery and make rolls in the muffin tin with them. You roll three balls of dough and drop them into the muffin tin slots. I know those are good. Do any of you have a better idea for me?

I think Joe and I will meet for lunch tomorrow, and go get the paint for the house. Don told us to tell them (he wants Sherwin Williams) to give us his discount. Happy about that! Hope they will.

The week goes on.... Thanks for stopping by today! Peace & blessings!

  1. WOW, you are really getting things done around there. I know you will be happy when completed. It is good to have people you know, or people who know people, to work on projects for you. How do you have a private Pinterest board? Hope you can finish the project at work today. Hugs

    1. It's a new option, Linda, to have a private board. Just showed up one day - probably with an update. Go all the way down to where you can see the outline of empty new boards and one should say private...you can share it with only people you want to see it (or no one).

  2. That's nice that you know people that can help out with house repairs etc. Sounds like you both had a busy day.
I love Pinterest. I have found some good recipes on there. I also like allrecipes.com too. You can read reviews from people that have actually tried recipe.
    Have a good day!

    1. Kim, I love AllRecipes.com, too! They have some great recipes, and you can adjust the number of servings, which I love.

  3. A private Pinterest board -- what a great way to organize your ideas!

We have Sherwin Williams paint on our house (inside and out) that was built 18 months ago. It's holding up well.

  4. You know that I make my own rolls, which are really not difficult to do because they require almost no kneading. If you'd like the recipe, just let me know. I've just copied a recipe from Yahoo that I want to try too, so if you'd like a copy of this Brussels sprouts recipe... It sounds good and tasty.

Can't wait to see more photos of the exterior of your house! Enjoy the rest of your day.

    1. I would love the recipe for your easy rolls, though my experience with yeast is that it never lives for me. I think there is something in my chemical make-up that zaps the life out of yeast. The only way it works for me is in a bread machine - and I don't touch the dough when I use the machine. Sigh. I LOVE brussels sprouts, but would be eating them along. Joe is not a vegetable lover and that is at the top of his list. Sigh again!

  5. Isn't it great to find someone to help out around the house. Huzzah! Anxious to see the finished product.

I really prefer yeast rolls for Thanksgiving, but one of my favorites when time is short (ah, like Thanksgiving) is beer bread. Its so simple and easy and tasty.

  6. If you have an Aldi's, Terri, they sell Beer Bread box mix. It is good. ANYWAYS...how homes are so different down south...looks like the house I grew up in-in Ocala. Blessings

  7. You're getting so much done! Can't wait to see the after photos. I think your idea for rolls is a good one. We are lucky to have a bakery nearby that makes amazing yeast rolls and we always have them on Thanksgiving.

  8. Sounds like you all have a lot of work! I'm not sure I'd prefer working with numbers, but my flowerbeds are just a disaster this year. I should have hired someone for that task. What a fun pet, a snake. Lol. Bet kitty had a good time with it. Up here, this is the time of year that mice want to move in for the winter. Fortunately I've not seen any. Knock on wood!

  9. Here is my recipe for Icebox Rolls:

This is the stickiest bread dough I've ever worked with, but the results are always the same: lovely and light. Despite being messy, the less the dough is kneaded the better the bread.

    Ingredients:

    1 package dry yeast

    1 3/4 cup lukewarm water

    1/2 cup sugar

    2 beaten eggs

    1 teaspoon salt

2/3 cup melted shortening (I use vegetable oil)

    6 cups sifted flour

    Directions:

Dissolve yeast in water. Add sugar, eggs, salt and shortening. Mix well and add flour. The dough will be sticky. Knead for a few times on a floured board, keeping your hands floured. Put the dough in a well-greased bowl and cover with waxed paper and a damp cloth. Place in fridge. Let stand at least two hours before using. Shape into rolls and let rise about 1 1/2 hours. Bake at 400ยบ F for 15 minutes.

    Some words of advice:

I usually let the yeast sit in the warm water for about 10 minutes before I start adding the other ingredients. I also add a teaspoon of sugar to the yeast and water to further activate the yeast.

I form balls for the rolls - no other shapes. Make sure you keep your hands floured while you're making the balls.
