Hodgepodge Wednesday, February 12th

Hodgepodge Questions Volume 162

Here are this week's questions...answer on your own blog, then hop back over to Joyce's Blog on Wednesday to share the linky love.

1.What makes love last?  Trust and respect for each other. Knowing little things about each other that matter. Laughter. There has to be joy and laughter.  Also....you have to love yourself first.

2. The Beatles made their US debut fifty years ago this week. Are you a fan? If so, what's your favorite Beatles tune?  I have never been a big Beatles fan. I was 12 when they hit the Sullivan Show, and remember watching them, and all the screaming girls, and wondering what the fuss was about. I preferred/prefer the Rolling Stones. I started liking the Beatles just before they broke up....the Abbey Road Album, and Come Together.

3. Valentine's Day-your thoughts? Do you celebrate in any way? Do anything special for the people you love? Expect anything special from the people who love you?  Joe is not very romantic (and neither am I). We have always given Valentine's Day a nod, and usually exchange cards. Sometimes there is candy involved.  I do special things for the people I love all the time (I think I do, anyway). We don't need Valentine's Day to express our love.  It's kind of a Hallmark holiday....

4. Steak or burger...you have to choose. Now that that's settled, how do you like it?  I like steak and burgers, and not one more than the other (sorry!) - it depends on the restaurant and my mood. I like both cooked medium. A little pink, but no runny blood.  I like mushrooms with my steak, and lettuce, tomato, onion and mayo on my burgers.

5. The Hodgepodge lands on the birth date (February 12th) of Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States of America. Lincoln is quoted as saying, 'Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test his character give him power.'  Do you agree? Why or why not?  I had not heard that quote before, but I agree with Lincoln (on lots of issues!). Power has a way of turning people into cruel monsters. Those in powerful positions, who can rise above the temptations that come with the territory, are the wo/men of character Lincoln was referring to.

6. Honest Abe's image is featured on the US penny (1 cent coin) so I'm wondering...what do you do with your pennies (or your country's equivalent)?  It's been suggested the US stop making the penny, and two bills have been introduced proposing just that, but neither were approved. What say you? I'm thinking of all the things I purchase for $1.99, or $5.99 (etc.)....that's a lot of pennies not spent throughout the year. If the penny goes away, we will pay $2.00, or $6.00, and there goes that "penny saved is a penny earned" mindset.  "See a penny, pick it up, all the day you'll have good luck."  I'm sure they will one day go away, as they have in much of Europe.

7.  Do you think pop culture deserves serious study?  Not if it means someone is getting thousands of dollars in a government grant to do the study!!  (Snickering.) What difference will it make? None!

8. Insert your own random thought here.  Not so random, but I can't wait to have our two sons and our grandson all under our roof at the same time, next week!! First time in a very long time I'll have all my boys together! I'm a happy girl!! Familia!!

Joey, me, and Jeff.  This was three or four years ago,
and Tristan wasn't there with us.

  5. I couldn't manage to choose between steak or burger either. (Maybe because we raise beef cattle.) :) It's always so special to have the family all together. Enjoy!

  6. I don't really enjoy beef unless it's roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. We have 1-cent and 2-cent coins too, and I spend them. Besides, don't they say if you get travel sickness, to put a penny in your shoe? Good answers, though some of mine would be different.

This year we are going up to the camper so that will be fun. I love the Rolling Stones!! Can you believe they are still together after all these years? Wow. Have a wonderful Wednesday, Terri!

  14. Agree absolutely with #1, but vice versa with #2. Boy I just couldn't stand the Stones, but was always happy listening to the Beatles. Have a great time with you men next week, Terri. You're such a lucky girl, indeed :)

  15. I love your answers. I can match some of them again... Bob's not a romantic so it's the same way in my house; I like my burgers with the same exact toppings and I totally agree with you answer about lasting love. When I answered that question, I narrowed it down to just 3 qualities. I could have given a very long list, written a book on my thoughts.

  17. Our answers on these Hodgepodge questions are always pretty much the same. I didn't participate this week. I was 15 when the Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan and was excited about the first few songs they did, but after that, I never really cared much for them. I so agree with you on the Abe Lincoln quote about power.

My husband always makes me a special card for whatever the occasion and we go out for dinner, usually the night before or after. Since we eat out most of the time anyway, we try to go someplace a little more special. Tonight we had Greek food. Ummmmmmmgood.

Being with your loved ones all together - always special.
