I'm seeing posts for Friday Fragments and Random Five Friday. Since I don't really join in on these memes, I thought I could combine them for my Friday post and do Random Friday Fragments! LOL
I have so many new friends here, on Blogger, and only several who also came over from Multiply (I still miss a whole bunch of my Multiply friends)...so my oldest/dearest may already know some of this, but most of you probably don't know these fragments of my life.
- I am the oldest of four children, with two younger sisters still living and a younger brother who died of cancer 10 years ago, at age 48. I also lost my parents to cancer, and am an ever vigilant survivor myself.
- I played the trumpet in the school band, starting in 5th grade then in Jr.High Band, and on to high school concert and marching bands. I LOVED band. I have also had piano and organ lessons, but I started late and just could never get the hang of reading bass clef music, after playing trumpet for so long. I can memorize a piece for the piano or organ, but it takes me forever to get the left hand playing along with the right! My two "go-to" songs on the piano were "The House of the Rising Sun" and the theme from Romeo & Juliet "A Time For Us". That also dates me!! LOL
- I was married the same year I graduated from high school (1970). That marriage lasted 10 years. He went to my high school, though is four years older than me. It was during Vietnam, and he was in the Marine Corp when we officially met (I knew who he was) and dated. Divorce is not pretty or fun, and was rougher on our families than it was on us. We grew up in a very small town. We are still friendly when we see each other (though rarely) and have both moved on to happy marriages. Joe and I have been married 28 years. His first wife and the mother of our two 'boys' died of cancer. Joe met Bill at my brother's funeral and his comment was "He's a nice guy." I said, yes, he is....
- I wanted to be an art teacher at one time. I gave up college for marriage and the white picket fence (which never materialized - I worked while he went to school. He finished his Masters Degree and then he wanted out). So, I finally got my degree at age 50, of which I am quite proud, but it was in business and finance, rather than art education. I love doing accounting in an art museum!! What could be better for me?!
- I have a business license for jewelry and crafts, but my inventory is long gone, and I haven't really worked at it for three or four years. I need to either get back to it, or get rid of my supplies and move on! I like having a creative outlet, but don't make the time for it. Sigh.
I am not coordinated enough to play an instrument. lol My hubby does and my son dabbles in a few different ones. He wants drums for Christmas. Lucky me lol
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing those personal aspects of your life, Terri. That's not always easy to do. I can't even imagine being in accounting. I'd totally mess up all the books. lol BUT I'm glad there are people like you who do it! :-)
ReplyDeleteIf you ever want to go on with the piano, I would suggest talking to Julie about the book she has me using. I played clarinet in school and had the same problems you talk about. I couldn't get my left hand to do what it should, but this system I'm using has gotten me past that point and it's become so much easier for my 2 hands to do what they should. I was amazed. I never thought I'd be able to do it.
ReplyDeletePlus we're NEVER too old to learn!
I knew most of these fragments of your life. Thanks for sharing them.
ReplyDeleteI miss ysome of our Multiply friends too. The other day I was thinking about 'justmekelly'. She was on facebook for a while as are some of our friends from Multiply, but facebook can't compare with what we had on Multiply.
I really enjoyed this post - it's nice to know more about you. I may have to do this too!
ReplyDeleteI think you have the perfect job, and I wish you well on your event tonight!
ReplyDeleteI knew a little of this from our conversations, and I adore Joe and think you two are the perfect couple!
I lost my brother too with heart issues. What kind of cancer did your brother die of? I am so sorry. And you were married before. I didn't know that either. I hope you have a great weekend. sandie
ReplyDeleteInteresting stuff. I played clarinet in band - - started in fifth grade, too and played through the first year of college. (I only did two years of a four year school.) I started teaching myself piano as an adult during and after the time my girls were taking lessons. That bass clef threw me for a loop, too - - - same problems as you trying to coordinate hands. My mind would never memorize the bass clef notes but kept looking at them as a third (or something like that) different from the treble clef. it makes it difficult to play a piece when you are translating notes in your head at the same time. Memorizing that part was a smart idea - - wish I had thought about it!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter has made lots of jewelry but most of the supplies got put in storage when the baby arrived. There doesn't seem to be time for teaching school and being a mom/wife, etc - -- and make jewelry. Same daughter you follow on her blog. However, she has recently started sewing.
That was a wonderful clip of your life. I have 3 friends who put husbands through university and then had to wait 20 years to do their own training. 2 ended up divorced but I hung in....Thank you for sharing.
