Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 635
2. I ask this question every January, and I always get comments about how we shouldn't be banning words. This is fun and games, so just play along : )
Every January 1st since 1976, Lake Superior University has published a list of words they'd like to see banished from the Queen's English. Words may be banished due to misuse, overuse, or just general uselessness (go here to read about how the words are chosen). Here's the list for 2026-
67 • demure • cooked • massive • incentivize • full stop • perfect • gift/gifted • my bad • reach out
Which one (if any) do you use most often? Which one of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech, and why? Is there a word that you think should have made the list? I still don't understand 67. The only one I've used is "my bad", and I don't know why it would be banned. I wouldn't ban any of them, and I don't have any to add.
3. What are your nightly rituals? Is that different from your 'ideal' nightly ritual? If so, what's your ideal? I'm retired and on my own. I don't really have nightly rituals, but I do usually read when I get in bed. I go to bed between 9 and 10, so that may be a ritual.
4. January 6th is/was National Bean Day. Do you like beans? Which one is your favorite? Last thing you ate made with beans? I do like beans and made some very good (if I do say so) ham and bean soup with leftover Christmas ham. I don't really have a favorite because I like them all.
5. Are you easily embarrassed? Elaborate. At one time in my life, I could be embarrassed easily, but not so much anymore.
6. Insert your own random thought here. Not so random. After walking with my buddies yesterday morning, I had some breakfast, coffee, and read the newspaper (online). Then I got busy with the cleaning! All of Christmas was packed away on Monday. Feeling good about having the house back in order and looking like someone cares! LOL The cats are happy too. They do hate change and were BOTH in my lap when I finished cleaning and sat down. Thanks, Mom!

Grinning, I love seeing the cats, have a great day, Terri.
ReplyDeleteWe're 90% there with getting the house back in order. Still some cleaning to do and reorganizing in areas where I stashed things for the holidays. The house feels a little bare, but we'll get used to it again. I didn't host any of the big meals this holiday season so no real leftovers. I always love to make soup with the ham bone. Have a great day Terri!
ReplyDeleteI don't understand "67" either! Have a good rest of the week!
ReplyDeleteI don't get 67 either. Linda wrote that she would like to ban the F word. I'm in agreement with that.
ReplyDeleteI'm planning to make ham and bean soup soon. I put the leftover ham in the freezer and have to get on that.
Love seeing the happy cats!
Yep... that's a good one to ban, for sure. Sometimes I have to stop watching a TV show when that word is used every couple of minutes. I am over "crude" being thrown in my face.
DeleteI did have a good laugh over the 6-7 banning! My 13 year old grands all laugh all the time--I think it is just something to do to bug our generation! lol
ReplyDeleteOur Christmas is coming down today. Oh, I hate to see it go as the lights have been so warm and cheerful. Your cats look so very comfortable, too. Blessings, Terri!
ReplyDeleteI don't understand 67 either and I don't think the people who say it do either. lol
ReplyDeleteIt is nice to get Christmas packed away. It sounds like the cats are very happy about it.
I agree with you, Terri, in your opinion of saying "My bad." To me, it's a humble way of admitting one's mistake in a friendly way that should cause the other person to understand and forgive.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand the whole 6-7 thing either, but it's amusing. (Lots nicer than some of the stuff I hear coming out of their mouths.)
ReplyDeleteFunny, I'm not fond of beans or ham -- but I love how they combine to make a wonderful soup. Comfort food!
Dear Terri, I absolutely love seeing the cats in your lap!
ReplyDeleteI miss having a kitty in my lap at night!! I promised my ENT (allergy doc) that I wouldn't replace him since cats and dogs are my number one issue (along with many other allergens). Seeing yours in your lap looks so cozy!!
ReplyDeleteHopefully the 67 thing will become out of date and get dropped lol.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand 67 either. But the other words I can't figure out why they would be banned.
ReplyDeleteI love how positive your three words for 2025 are. :-) Enjoyed reading your answers today - hope you're having a great weekend!
