Housekeeping
Can we talk about housekeeping and chores today, since January was usually the time for white sales and replacing linens and towels for the household?
1. My mother ironed sheets and pillowcases. I iron the cases but not the sheets. I feel that the cases feel better after ironing, and I like the fancy ruffles, etc, to look better. What do you do? Is ironing a waste of time for you? Ironing sheets and pillow cases is a waste of time for me. I don't remember my mom ironing sheets and pillow cases.
2. A few friends really enjoy ironing. Are there any articles of clothing that you iron? And do you send clothing to the dry cleaner? I don't buy anything that requires dry cleaning, and I don't buy anything that needs ironing. I don't iron. I do have a steamer and use it now and then.
3. Home is enhanced by good cooking, clean rooms, freshly made beds, a quilt, and the lovely touches women bring to things. What special touches do you put on your home to make it special, cozy, and warm? I don't really have a style, unless casual is a style. I think my home is welcoming and comfortable.
4. Do you recall Mom or Grandma sprinkling and ironing clothing? Was there a laundry day set aside and an ironing day? What is washday like at your house? I remember my mom "sprinkling" clothes to iron, and I have sprinkled clothes to iron. They got rolled, and sometimes they were put in the refrigerator. My mom worked full-time. Washday was whenever she got to it. We hung the clothes on the line, outside, to dry during good weather. We made panicked runs for the lines if it started to rain (Oh no!! Get the clothes in!!)!

Sounds a lot like our house growing up! Clothes on the line, and when there'd be sudden showers we'd run to bring it all in before they got wet! I sure was happy when we got a dryer, but my mother still used the clothesline for sheets, etc. I wish I still had a clothesline for sheets too. They just smell so much better!!! See you soon! Do you want to spend the night? I'll put some clean sheets on the guest bed! LOL.
ReplyDeleteI remember my mom sprinkling and ironing and teaching me that way. We never rolled them and put them in the fridge though. Everything did hang on the line to dry.
ReplyDeleteI'm like you - no dry cleaning, no ironing and a steamer works well when I need it.
We only did the refrigerator part if ironing was delayed. We had time to sprinkle, but time to iron was maybe the next day.
DeleteI remember my mother hanging out clothes on the line and ironing, Terri. The same panic would ensue if it started raining. No, I refuse to iron anything. Have a blessed day!
ReplyDeleteI don't iron anything unless it's a shirt or something that really needs it. I have an iron but no ironing board. If something I own says it needs dry cleaning I just throw it in the washing machine and hope for the best, everything has been OK so far. lol
ReplyDeleteMy mom never ironed sheets or pillowcases either and I don't either! Like Terri, I don't iron unless absolutely necessary.
ReplyDeleteI do remember Mama sprinkling and ironing. I am the oddball because I love to iron. It is my favorite chore and so relaxing.
ReplyDeleteI used to iron, but no more. I use Downey Spray Wrinkle Release. I remember my MIL ironing sheets. Hanging things out on the line, but not my own mom.
ReplyDeleteDear Terri, I love the vintage illustration! I stopped ironing decades ago! I use the permanent press cycle in the washer or dryer, so I fold and put away everything as soon as I finish drying them, so there is no need to iron, My mother used to iron, though. And I seem to remember Niagara Spray Starch as well!
ReplyDeleteI do have a steamer for cleaning my oven and hard surfaces - I should look into a steamer for clothing. That would be nice. I think ironing is becoming obsolete, like phone booths, Blockbuster and dial-up internet modems.
ReplyDeleteUsing my mother's "sprinkler" was one of my favorite things! Once the clothes came off the line, she'd allowed me to use the big old mangler to press pillowcases and daddy's handkerchiefs. I still love the feel of freshly ironed bedding, but I no longer iron anything. These days, while I "think about" getting out the iron and board to press the cloth napkins, thinking about it is as far as that goes. The last time we had company for dinner, no one seemed to mind a less-than-perfect looking napkin.
ReplyDeleteLike you, I'd rather my home feel welcoming and comfortable.
I used to play under the ironing board while my Mom did the ironing--good memories and smells! I only iron my quilt pieces most of the time and not too many items of clothing!
ReplyDeleteI grew up in San Diego so we rarely had to run to get the wash off the line. But I do remember helping my mom take it down. I have a photo of my oldest sister as a baby, sound asleep in the clothes line hamper. I have a tabletop ironing board and iron, but I rarely iron. Can't remember the last time I used it.
