January 10th: The Saturday 9

Thanks to Crazy Sam for today's questions!  Click HERE to join the fun!

Volare

Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit the posts of other participants and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Volare (1960)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) The word "volare" is Italian for "to fly." Say something else in Italian. A tavola non s'invecchia.  (One does not grow old at the table.)  This sign hangs in my kitchen (from the movie Nonnas).

2) This week, Bobby Rydell invites us to take off with him up in the clouds and promises we'll find a rainbow. Countless lyricists have included rainbows in their songs. Can you name another song that mentions rainbows?  Somewhere Over The Rainbow.

3) His happy heart is singing. What is making you happy this morning?  I am off to a Home Show with my walking buddies.  We will get our steps in there this morning!!

4) Bobby Rydell, like Frankie Avalon and Fabian, was a 1950s teen idol who hailed from Philadelphia. Home to the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, Philly is Pennsylvania's most populous city. Have you ever been there?  Yes, indeed.  That's where my Joe was from, and his folks lived in the suburbs.

5) Bobby was such a perfect example of a clean-cut American boy that when Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey sat down to write the play Grease, they named their fictional high school Rydell High after him. Do you have a favorite song from GreaseSummer Nights or Hopelessly Devoted

6) In addition to singing, Bobby also acted. His most famous film role was opposite Ann-Margret in Bye, Bye, Birdie (1963). Have you seen it?  Yes, a very long time ago.  I think I will look it up to watch again!

7) In 1960, when this record was popular, so were hand-loomed, 100% virgin wool sweaters from Italy. You could order one from the Sears catalog for $12.60 (approx. $135 in today's dollars). That sweater was labeled "dry clean only." Do you have any garments waiting to be picked up from the cleaners?  No, no, no.  I don't buy anything anymore that can't go in the washing machine.

8) Also in 1960, Princess Margaret married photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones. They met when he was commissioned to take her official portrait. Who took the most recent photo of you?  The ice cream server when I was visiting my grandkids last weekend.

9) Random question: Is your oldest friend also your best friend?  I think I can say that she is my bestie.  Elaine and I have been friends since we were 10 years old.  She knows my history.  I always refer to her as my BFF.  If Joe were still living, my answer would be him (so not the oldest).  My sister, Patti, is right up there, too!  BUT, Elaine is certainly my oldest friend of over 60 years (and is 6 months older than me!)  I am blessed, however, with many dear friends!

Peace and Hugs!

What a Friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.

  1. Nonnas is a great movie and Grease too! How interesting to learn Rydell High was named after Bobby Rydell!
I buy things not realising they need dry cleaned but stuff that, they go in the washing machine.
Have a good time at the Home Show!

  4. I love that Italian saying that "one does not grow old at the table." I should look for one of those for Danny - LOL! I hate to admit it, Terri, but I've never seen "Grease." Maybe, that needs to be on my bucket list. Have a blessed day!

  8. When I was a young girl I went around singing "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". I wanted so badly to get as far away from that house as I could. It was almost a theme of mine for awhile.
    Wonderful photo of y'all! ❤️

  9. I'd forgotten how delightful Bye, Bye, Birdie is ... the music!, the dancing! That quote intrigues me so; time to watch Nonna's again.

  10. I knew you'd have more Italian things to say than the rest of us thanks to Joe. There were lots of your memories of him today. :-) How was the home show? I've always loved going to those, but haven't gone in quite a while thanks to my feet/knee/leg issues. Have a happy Sunday, Terri!

  11. I keep in touch with my 3 best friends from growing up years - but we rarely see each other. We, too, are blessed with very close and very good friends. My bestie and I have been friends for almost 40 years. We met when our kids were babies.

  13. “Hopelessly Devoted” – great song!

My mother took Sister and me to see Bye Bye Birdie when it came out. It was probably the first teen-type musical I had ever seen up to that time.

Regarding question #8, who took the most recent photo of myself? Me! (Selfie)

You do, indeed, have a lot of friends, both young and old, recent and long-time! I am thankful to be in your crowd of friends.

  14. How wonderful that your and Elaine have remained good friends for so many years. That's a blessing. I loved John and Olivia singing, 'Your The One That I Want." Cute movie.

  16. I have a friend that I have known my entire life, ever since we were in the nursery class in Sunday School! We went to school together all the way through our senior year. Our paths led in different directions after that. She moved to Minnesota, and communication was not very available for many years. But with Facebook we have reconnected and thoroughly enjoy our friendship there.
