Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 631

From this Side of the Pond

1. What does it mean to have the 'holiday spirit'? On a scale of 1-10 how is yours this year? (10=off the charts, 1=still looking for it)  As I've gotten older, I've found myself much more in tune with "the real reason for the season".  Christmas hymns have more meaning than the silly, more secular songs.  I don't have little ones here anymore.  The little ones definitely take that holiday spirit to a 10. I am probably at 7 or 8.  I do still laugh at the silly Christmas movies, and have already watched Christmas Vacation.  I do love Christmas!!

2. What's your favorite character from a (December) holiday-themed movie, book, or TV special? Tell us why.  I have so many "favorite" Christmas movies, but I must admit that I love Scrooge in all of the Christmas Carol movies.  My #1 Scrooge is Alastair Sim in the 1951 version.

3. Do you like gingerbread? Are gingerbread houses part of your holiday tradition?  I do like gingerbread, but have never made a gingerbread house.

4. Much of our vocabulary is determined by where we live or where we grew up. What say you-

sprinkles or jimmies? lightning bugs or fireflies? soda or pop? sneakers, trainers, or tennis shoes? sub, hoagie, grinder, or hero? freeway, highway, or motorway? frosting or icing? sauce or gravyI also "fix" dinner...

5. Share a favorite holiday memory from your childhood.  I have many wonderful holiday memories from my childhood.  One was decorating the Christmas tree on my birthday.  We used to get real trees, and two weeks out was a good time to bring them into the house.  My birthday is exactly two weeks from Christmas Day, so it was a family tradition for a few years (until Mom wanted a fake, metallic tree with the colored lights)!!  Speaking of my birthday, Mom also made two red velvet cakes, from scratch, and one was my birthday cake.  She froze the other layers, and we had red velvet cake for Christmas dessert, too.

6.  Insert your own random thought here.  I went to the Tampa Zoo yesterday with Cheryl.  We had a nice time, and the weather was great for a day out.  Not too hot and a little breeze.  I was disappointed because I expected bigger and much better.  The main thrust of the zoo is to protect endangered animals, and they are doing that well, but it is not very entertaining.  We didn't see very many animals.  I will post photos on Friday.

Peace and Hugs!

O Come, O Come, Immanuel...

  1. I'm sorry the zoo was a bit of a disappointment. That's a bummer, but I'm sure you and Cheryl still had a fun day. I love the sounds of your Christmasses at home, and oh yes, I must remember your birthday is coming right up! Red Velvet cake sounds delicious. Will you have one this year? You should! Your vocabulary words are all the same as mine would be. Although, before we moved to Florida (when I was almost 6), in Pennsylvania we always called soda, "pop". But in Florida everything was a "coke", regardless of what kind of soda it was. LOL. Oh, Alistair Sim is our favorite Scrooge also! It's hard to find that version of the movie to watch, but he is definitely the best. I hope you have a blessed rest of your week. I am still recuperating, but feeling better, thank the Lord.

    1. Since Jeff will be here for my birthday, I will probably get a Publix red velvet cake to have with him. He can sing and I can blow out a candle or two.

  2. I feel like everyone we knew got a real tree and they never went up until about the middle of the month. We have really taken the calendar and run with it in terms of when the Christmas season begins. Whew. We will get a real tree if we're home and hosting. Otherwise the 'fake' tree feels safer. I do love a real tree though. Enjoy your day Terri!

  3. Hmmm, that's interesting about the zoo. We went there several times when Sophie was little. I remember a place where we went up a stairway and were face to face with giraffes. I guess things have changed since then.

    1. I believe it has changed ownership and went from Lowry Park Zoo to Tampa Zoo at Lowry Park. I saw one giraffe in the distance. Very disappointing. We saw more monkeys and hippos than anything else.

  4. We had a real tree until Laura developed an allergy to it. I must say that the artificial ones are easier!
What a bummer about the zoo.
I love Scrooge too and we often watch that 1951 version, it's a good one.

  5. I know I had more Christmas spirit when my girls were younger but it's still there just in a different way now!
How wonderful to decorate your tree on your birthday when you were younger. Things like that are so special. Yum to the cake!

  6. Houston has a wonderful zoo and they really 'do it up good' for Christmas. We haven't been in a very long time . . . I would go again if I could. I really enjoyed your Christmas memories and I feel the same on #1. btw, I LOVE red velvet cake♥

  7. That's a great perk about having a December birthday, Terri. Those cakes sound amazing, too. I love real trees, but we've had an artificial one here that works fine for us. So much easier both to put up and take down. Blessings!

  8. Terri, I think when the zoos decided to let the animals in a natural habitat rather than like we used to have small cages - the animals do spread out and it is hard to see them.
You must love Red Velvet cake.
We have an artificial tree. It is just so easy.

    1. I understand what you mean about the animals, but there aren't natural habitats there. Some enclosures only had one animal. There were four hippos, three elephants. It was a sad collection there. One tiger. A few penguins...

  10. That's a great tradition, marrying the new tree with your birthday. And TWO homemade red velvet cakes .... yum! We've three family birthdays this month, but no-one seems to feel he/she's treated any less than say, if their birthday fell in June. Each one is a blessing.
