The Saturday 9 on June 14th...

Thanks to Crazy Sam for today's questions!  Y'all can join in HERE!

I Will See You in C-U-B-A

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks, we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: I Will See You in C-U-B-A (2010)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
This song was chosen in honor of Father's Day.

1) In this week's song, Lucie Arnaz encourages us to hop a ship and join her in Cuba. Is your passport up to date?  Yes, it is.

2) She sings that Cuba is a great place to enjoy wine and Panatelas. Do you like the smell of a good cigar?

Actually, I don't mind it in small doses because it reminds me of my grandpa.  He smoked cigars.

3) Lucie said her Latin Roots CD represents "the rhythms of my soul" and is a tribute to her father, Desi Arnaz. Cuban-born Desi starred on Broadway and in nightclubs but was best known for co-starring in and producing the 1950s sitcom, I Love Lucy. When you think of I Love Lucy, what's the first thing that comes to mind?  Vitameatavegimen

4) While Lucie's parents – Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball – are famous for their TV work, Tony-nominated Lucie has found her greatest success on the stage. She inherited their love of performing, saying, “My parents were always happiest when they were working.” What have you inherited from one or both of your parents? (It could be anything from your work ethic to your eye color.)  I have more traits from my dad than from my mom.  I definitely look like him, and I have his arthritis and his lack of patience (working on it!).  I also say I have his flat chest, since my mom and my two sisters are better "endowed" than I am! LOL

5) Though "Ricky Riccardo" often mangled English on
I Love Lucy, Desi's English was very good. Lucille Ball admired his facility with languages and encouraged him to speak Spanish to their children so that they would be bilingual. When you were growing up, did your family speak any language other than English?  Nope.

6) Desi Arnaz often performed "I Will See You in C-U-B-A." Is there a song that reminds you of your father?  I mentioned in a previous blog that we sang in the car when I was a kid.  Dad loved this one, and he got faster with each addition to make us all laugh...

7) After Lucie's parents divorced, Lucille Ball remarried and Lucie got a stepfather, Gary Morton. Lucie appreciated how positive Gary always was about Desi. Decades later, when she married a man who already had children, Lucie said she better understood what a tough role a stepparent can be. Did you have a stepparent? Are you a stepparent?  I had step-grandparents, and I am a stepmom to Joe's two "boys", Joey and Jeff.

8) As a single dad, Desi lived south of Los Angeles in Del Mar. Lucie and her brother, Desi Jr., spent school vacations there, going to the race track, bowling, and fishing with their dad. Share a happy memory from one of your school vacations (Christmas, Spring Break, or Summer).  Our family summer vacations for four years or so were in Canada, at a fishing "camp" on Rice Lake, in Ontario.  Dad loved to fish, and we loved eating the fish!  They were great times.  My grandparents always came, and one year, BFF Elaine and her family came!!  We rented a cabin, so we did not live in tents.  That is an outhouse behind us below. No bathroom in the cabin.  Showers were across the street where the "office" was located. There was running water in the kitchen, though.

Elaine and I...
Mom and my sister, Tammy

9) Father's Day began in Washington state. In the early 1900s, Spokane resident Sonora Smart Dodd listened to her minister deliver a sermon celebrating Mother's Day and devoted herself to similarly honoring fathers. A century later, more money is still spent annually on Mother's Day. Why do you suppose that nationally we still make more of a fuss over Mother's Day than Father's Day?  Maybe because moms are easier to buy presents for?  I really have no idea because dads should be celebrated equally!!

Peace and Hugs!

This is my Father’s world, and to my list’ning ears,
All nature sings, and round me rings
The music of the spheres.
This is my Father’s world: I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas;
His hand the wonders wrought.

  4. I loved reading your Father's Day memories especially the fishing trips in Canada and singing in the car. So touching! You’ve got a great blend of humor and nostalgia here. And that flat chest line? LOL!

    Thanks for the smiles today.

  5. Hello, my friend! This was a fun post. I always "Loved Lucy". You remind me that we need to renew our passports this summer. Your black and white family photos were fun. I am sure you have some lovely memories and times with your family growing up. I will stop by for another visit soon. Have a good weekend. .

  6. Your vacations in Canada sound like fun.

I’ve never heard that song before, but I know a few similar ones, where each new verse builds on the previous verses. They’re fun to sing, aren’t they?

  7. I'd forgotten that Lucy clip ... too funny! Your family fishing trips remind me of the summers I attended girls' camp in Colorado. Yes, on more than one occasion lately, I've reflected "how on Earth?" did we make it with no bathroom nearby? (lol)
Regretfully, I let my passport lapse years ago; I'm not really led to leave the Country anymore.

  8. The only vacations we took with my parents growing up were to visit our grandparents and other relatives in Massachusetts. A long drive from GA, but worth every mile traveled for the memories made. I'm a step-mom, too! Blessings, Terri!

  11. Didn't know all that about Lucie Arnez. Your Father's Day memories are sweet. As for buying gifts, just go with typical "guy" stuff (even though I like them too), as in, screwdrivers, flashlights, etc. That'll work.
    Blessings. 💌

  12. I enjoyed reading the questions and your answers!! Cigars are a no-go for me. Smelling them gives me a headache. My dad remarried (after our mom died) and we had a step-mother for five years. I say five years, but it was really much longer than that. After they had been married for five years, our dad died. From the beginning, her family was jealous of us. It was really odd and you could tell she was torn. We still saw her and we knew she loved us and we loved her . ..it was just an unusual relationship because of outside forces.

  13. My responses:
    1. I have no passport. Don’t plan to go out of the country.
    2. Not a fan of cigar smoke.
    3. I Love Lucy — we didn't like 'canned laughter' but we did see a lot of Lucy.
    4. I’ve inherited my mother’s brown eyes and my father’s smile.
    5. Just spoke English in my growing up family.
    6. “Sleepy Shores” was one of my father’s favorites. He loved saxophone music.
    7. I’m a step-parent, although those “kids” are well into adulthood. I’m also a step great grandmother!!!
    8. My dad flew in corporate aviation after he left the airlines. Sometimes there was space on the plane (and permission from the boss) for my family to go along. We went to Lufkin, Texas, Rapid City, South Dakota, Palm Springs, California, and Grass Valley, California.
    9. Well, there’s the high number of “absent dads”…. Thankfully, although my father’s job had him away a lot, he was still loving, attentive, and just what I needed in a father.
