Wednesday's Hodgepodge...

Thanks to Joyce for today's Hodgepodge!!  Y'all can join in HERE!

Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 567

From this Side of the Pond

1. Something you're working on currently?  Getting things fixed in my house that need fixin'!!  It will be a two-month process and I'll keep the progress posted on my blog.

2. Tell us something about your first job? Was it a positive or negative experience for you? Did your parents insist you work while in school (either high school or college) or did you work because you wanted to?  Other than babysitting, my first "real" job was working at Weldon's Ice Cream Factory, waiting on tables and scooping ice cream.  Weldon's was a summer job.  I did babysitting during the school year.  My parents didn't insist I work but were happy that I did.  I wanted the extra cash and enjoyed the jobs.

3. Have you ever had a job that required overnight travel? How did you feel about that? Have you ever had a job that required you to wear a uniform? Do you work better in the morning or at night?  When I worked at the American Red Cross, we got new 'computers' and they sent me to Boulder, Colorado, for a week of training on the NBI System.  That was actually the first time I flew in a commercial plane.  It was a fun adventure and I learned what I needed to learn about NBI.  I have never had to wear a uniform to work.  I am a morning person.  Always have been.

4. What's something you bake or cook that is labor intensive? Is it worth it? The only thing I have ever made that took all day (and I only did it once) was a true Italian Cream Cake, from an authentic recipe.  You can't find a recipe for Italian Cream Cake like Joe remembered from his younger years.  It's a long story to tell how I got it but it was a phone call from an Italian pastry chef, who lives in Canada.  I had to write it down as she told me.  Oh my goodness.  But it was good and Joe loved it...  Yes, it was worth it!!

It has chocolate and vanilla cream filling, cherry liqueur, whipped cream icing with chopped nuts, and I had to get powdered vanilla flavoring to use instead of liquid.

I usually don't make anything with more than 4-5 ingredients, or that takes more than an hour to prepare.  Such a slug.

5. One thing you're looking forward to in the month of September? Being retired again and starting that new chapter in my story. Also, a new refrigerator and a new washer & dryer.  My laundry closet is one of my projects.

6. Insert your own random thought here.  I brag about my community here in Mas Verde and will just say we are blessed to have a handyman who does excellent work for good wages. I'm going to be keeping him busy over the next couple of months.  His wife, Robin, is his 'manager'.  She books the work and sends him out.  He told me she leaves him a list in the kitchen every morning and he just goes where she directs him.  LOL  They are good people and he does excellent work.

Peace and Hugs!

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;

  3. We've been using Small Business for home repairs whenever possible too. It's cheaper, he does excellent work and helps a neighbor. Win-win.
    Have a great day. 💙

  4. It's good to have someone trustworthy to do the smaller but neccessary projects that need doing. I have an Italian Cream Cake recipe from an Italian too. I haven't made it in years and mine is also super labor intensive. And delicious! My father-in-law loved it and the last time I made one I think was for his birthday over ten years ago. Maybe longer. Enjoy your day Terri!

  5. Wowza, but that cake looks wonderful! Just look at the smile on Joe's face! I can't imagine the labor involved, but know it was liberally sprinkled with love.
How fortunate you are to have a reliable 'handyman' on site! While in Arizona, my Tom used to do that. Maybe because of his communications and attention to detail our expectations are high -- but our experiences with workers here has been disappointing at best.

  6. I asked Danny if he ever had an Italian Cream Cake growing up, and yes he did! As we have to watch our sweets and carbs intake, I don't think I'll be learning how to bake one. I love the photo of Joe smiling so handsomely! Blessings, Terri!

  7. Oh the cake looks delicious. I know it is hard to find good recipes. My dad's oldest sister married an Italian and had to learn to cook. She catered weddings and political events and we worked with her earning a few dollars. But I can not find her recipe for the different Italian cookies. She always cooked for 100's so she could never give you her recipes. Your precious Joe's face said it all that you hit in out of the park with the Italian Cream Cake recipe. Sweet memories. Have a blessed week.
