Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 568
2. Growing up, did you spend a lot of time with your grandparents? We lived close to grandparents on both sides until I was 10, when we moved an hour away. I did spend a week at each place in the summers until I started working my summer jobs. What's something you learned from a grandparent? A love of family history from my Granny (paternal) and that you have to fry chicken in lard. I have some fun memories from Grandma (maternal) but she was very difficult and hard to love. I learned later in life that she may have been abused as a child (by her dad) and she went to live with her grandmother when she was around six years old. That could explain some of the dysfunction but doesn't make memories of her any easier to understand. Just sad for her now. I had to become her guardian when she was in her late 80s and cared for her, despite her hateful actions and words. I cared for her gently because she gave birth to my mom (who died of cancer years before). I did it for mom, not for grandma.
3. What's your go-to breakfast? I love to go out for breakfast, but here at home it is usually eggs, bacon or ham, toast or bagels, and when there is time, some hash browns, too. I'm not a cereal lover, but do keep shredded wheat and/or honey nut Cheerios in the pantry for a quick breakfast when needed. If I eat a good breakfast, I don't eat lunch. I usually just have two meals a day.
4. Tell us the story behind one of your favorite photos. This hangs on the wall in my living room (and always will). It is a favorite of my sweetheart and our amazing vacation in Italy, back in 2007. This was a gondola ride on the Grand Canal in Venice. The Rialto Bridge is in the distance. What a blessing that we had Italy!!
5. This week Friday lands on the 13th. Are you superstitious in any way? Do you like scary movies, and if so what's your favorite? I am not superstitious though my love of scary movies (vampires in particular) prompted me to wear a cross necklace all the time, even in bed, so I would have protection from them. That was up into my mid-teens. (Now I don't need to wear a cross for protection because Christ lives in me every hour of every day.) Do I still believe in vampires? No, not really--------------
6. Insert your own random thought here. I have had some funny feelings since not going to work (three days now!). I've had feelings that I should be somewhere and/or that I need to hurry. I have also had silly feelings that it is Saturday and wondering what day it really is. Fleeting and silly and makes me giggle. It's all good!! LOL

I will always remember 9/11,
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry for your memories of your maternal Grandma. I know your mom would have been proud and thankful of the way you cared for her. My maternal grandparents had both passed by the time I was 6 months, my paternal grandma died when I was 4 but I do have some sweet memories of her. My other Grandpa passed when I was 20. I remember going fishing at his house.
I love that photo of Joe in Italy!
I can imagine that it's hard for your brain to get used to retirement. I'm sure I'll have those same feelings!
Bittersweet memories of your grandmother, Terri. I love how you directed your thoughts into (performing) an act of love for your mother.
ReplyDeleteJoe! I suspected you might choose this picture. Not unlike Rick in 'Casablanca', you'll always have Italy. Hugs!
I've been retired for almost 3 years and I still can't remember which day of the week it is. lol Love that picture of Joe in Italy. I have a painting in my house done by my daughter of that bridge area. I don't recognize the verse you quoted, but my what great words! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI wish we had been able to live closer to my grandparents as I was growing up. I know that's why I miss my grandchildren so much because I used to be able to see them so often when they lived only miles from us. Such sad memories of your mother's mother, but you certainly did the right thing in looking after her in her last years. I adore that photo of Joe that you took in Italy - that's a beloved memory of a beloved man.
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Terri!
It comes with retirement, being a little unsure which day of the week it is. I am surprised how often that happens to me!
ReplyDeleteWhen 9/11 happened, I didn't think we'd be as well off today as we are. The Lord's mercies have been with all of us through the worst and beyond.
It will probably be a while before you get used to not working. I will NEVER forget 9-11. So, you only eat two meals a day and you cook a good breakfast. I know you love that picture of Charlie. Glad you were close to your grandparents. My dad was born Sept. 13 - he'd be 106!
ReplyDeleteBreakfast out is my favorite! If I have a big later breakfast I just eat two meals too. I could probably skip dinner most nights and just get by with a snack. It's hard to watch the coverage of 9/11 ever year but I'm glad they play it. Glad we are forced to see the horror and remember that day. We were united in our grief and our love for our country and it feels like we're a long way from that now. Take care.
