Saturday 9...

Thanks to Crazy Sam for today's questions!  You can join in HERE!

Diana

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions.

Saturday 9: Diana (1957)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) Legend has it that Paul Anka wrote this song about his favorite babysitter. In your younger days, did you make a little extra money as a sitter?  I did babysit a bit.  I made a whopping 50 cents an hour back then!!

2) Paul sings he doesn't care what "they" say about his love for an older girl. Have you ever had a romantic relationship that your friends or family didn't approve of?  Nope.

3) Paul was once a choirboy, singing with the St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral choir in Ontario. Have you ever performed with your church choir?  I was never in the church choir but did sing in chorus, in high school, and was part of an All-County chorus concert one year that was pretty spectacular.

4) When Paul was 15, he left Ontario to find fame and fortune in New York. He had $100 in his pocket, a gift from his uncle. Tell us about someone in your life who believed in you and encouraged you.  First and foremost, my parents, but Joe encouraged me to go back to college to finish my degree when I was 48 years old.  Eighteen months later, I had my BA degree at age 50.

5) Paul seldom gets credit for one of his most familiar compositions: the theme to The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. Since Johnny retired in 1992, The Tonight Show has been hosted by Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, and Jimmy Fallon. Which of these Tonight Show hosts is your favorite?  Johnny, of course.  I like Jay Leno but never watched it with Conan or Jimmy.

6) In 1978, Paul Anka hired Las Vegas' first female bartender for his restaurant, Jubilation. Where did you most recently dine out?  I met my friends, Al and Theresa, at Romeo's Italian Restaurant, for a late lunch after work yesterday.  We shared a pizza.  Al and I worked together at the Museum but they are both retired now and live here in Mas Verde.  It was fun catching up with them and their daughter and two grands (and son-in-law).  The kids live in Tampa so they get to see them a couple of times a month.

7) In 1957, when "Diana" was a hit, Wham-O began producing Frisbees. The toy was a massive success, even outselling the hula hoop. Do you enjoy tossing a Frisbee?  I used to toss one around now and then but I don't run anymore with artificial knees and not-so-great balance.

8) Also, in 1957, the book Peyton Place was made into a blockbuster film. Book lovers often say that, no matter what, the movie is never as good as the book. Do you think that's true?  I do always like the book better than the movie but some movies get it pretty close.  Hunger Games comes to mind.

9) Random question: This Saturday, the treat's on Sam. Will you have buttered popcorn, caramel corn, or cheese popcorn?  I will take the caramel, please.

Peace & Hugs!

The grace of God has reached for me
and pulled me from the raging sea
And I am safe on this solid ground,
the Lord is my salvation

  3. I babysat a lot! When I started it was also 50 cents an hour. I can't believe what babysitters are paid now.
I was in the school choir and the church choir.
    I liked Paul Anka.
    Enjoy your weekend Terri!

  4. I, too, loved Paul Anka! I need to Google him and see what he's up to these days. The Tonight Show just isn't the same without Johnny Carson. Correction: That should be past tense because I refuse to watch Jimmy.

  6. I never knew that Anka wrote the Tonight Show theme, Terri. Interesting!
I love popcorn, too, but I'll take mine with butter.
    Happy Saturday!

  8. Oh, I didn't even think of the balance thing with Frisbee...it probably wouldn't go well for me for that reason. I have horrid balance at the best of times. I've never read The Hunger Games (not usually my kind of fiction) but I have heard quite a few people say the movies were very close to the books on those. I rather like a couple different versions of Little Women, too, for the same reason. I bought the kids Birthday Cake flavored popcorn today at Sam's. I don't know if I'd like it, but I'm sure they will. It has sprinkles on it! Have a wonderful weekend, Terri!

  9. I enjoyed Johnny Carson the most also. The shows are too political now and I do not watch them. I do not want my day ending that way. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.

  11. Have you ever had half caramel popcorn and half cheese popcorn? It may be called Chicago popcorn. I've had in the Chicago airport and it sounded so gross to me until I had the first bite. It is actually yummy! Congrats on your degree! I'm so impressed!!
