Independence Day, July 4, 1776
Happy 4th of July and a warm welcome to Tuesday 4 from the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Let's talk about the day...
1. What is your tradition for July 4th? Do you read the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights?
No, I don't read the Declaration or the Bill of Rights, but I always have a copy of them at hand (in the magazine rack). As for traditions, our HOA does the potluck/cookout each year and I'm going today.
When I was a kid (and into early adulthood), my folks threw a HUGE gathering in our backyard each year for the 4th. It started out as just the neighborhood but grew to include a lot of families from our church as well. The potluck food was terrific, there was always homemade ice cream, badminton, croquet, conversation, and laughter. We had a huge yard and a beautiful big Maple tree for shade. Gosh, I miss it!! In 1976, my folks bought a bunch of Liberty Bells for everyone to ring at a prescribed time during the gathering. I still have mine!! That is a great memory!
2. Does your town do it up big for the holiday? There isn't a parade, but Lakeland does a HUGE fireworks display and they call it Red, White, and Kaboom!!
3. Do you fly the flag? Yes, I do!!
4. Have you visited Philadelphia, Pennsylvania our first capital? What did you see there? Joe was from the Philadelphia area so I have visited there many times. He took me on the "tour" the first time he took me to see his folks there and I saw all the high spots in town, most of it from the car - LOL He loved Philadelphia and all the Philly sports teams.

ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea about the little Liberty Bells! Hope the potluck -- and camaraderie is super enjoyable; so glad you have the day off. We're watching the West Point Band on Hoda and Jenna; almost brings tears to my eyes. Happy Fourth!

ReplyDeleteWe went to Philidelphia a few years ago and just loved the history there.
Our town has a parade, a festival with a car show, BBQ chicken and games, and then fireworks at night.
Oh beautiful, for spacious skies and amber waves of grain. For purple mountain majesty, above the fruited plain.... I am glad you are going to a neighborhood picnic today. That sounds like fun. I love that little liberty bell! What a treasure that is!! And what a happy tradition from your childhood. I love hearing about your 4th of July celebrations as a child. Such happy memories!! ReplyDeleteWe lived in the Wash. DC area for 4 years and saw a lot of great history but we never made it up to Philadelphia. Just ran out of time and had to go when the job transferred my husband. Happy 4th!
