Tuesday 4...

Thanks to Annie for today's questions!  You can join in HERE!

Old Times

Old-fashioned church picnic

Hello! Welcome back to our weekly question fest begun by Toni Taddeo and kept in her memory.

Let's talk about old times.....

1.  My town had an old-fashioned strawberry festival, a summertime picnic and carnival and the local church went caroling at Christmas time.    What did/does your town do? What about your family?

My town, growing up, had a Sweetcorn Festival (they still do).  My parents always hosted a 4th of July neighborhood picnic.

2. What things in your life did you love about the past?  I love that I grew up before computers and cell phones!  We had a lot more fun than kids today (I think).

3. What would you like to bring back that are no longer as popular as they once were?   Big family reunions!  Would you talk to friends about perhaps reviving old traditions?  I have talked to my family and we did have a reunion back in 2015. There were only about 26 attending for the entire week at the beach but it was great getting together with cousins from my mom's side of the family.  Sad to say the first four standing in the back row are no longer with us now.  We lost cousin Lana, my sweet Joe, cousin Jim, and cousin Vicki all in just the last 3-4 years.  I'm so glad we had the reunion.  (Not everyone went to dinner on this night.)

4.  Do you belong to an organization of any kind and do they have outings, picnics, or potlucks?  What special things do they engage in and what would you like them to do or accomplish?  My retirement community has potlucks often and my church does too.  My church small group meets twice a month for dinner.  My friends here in Mas Verde go out to eat every Thursday.

Peace & Hugs!

Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne
Hark how the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own
Awake my soul and sing, of Him who died for thee
And hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity

  1. Wonderful memories of all the really big family get togethers we hade. Now the kids are spread out all over the States. I am not sure how often they can really manage to connect en masse.

    1. That is always the problem. Families just don't stay in the same town or even county anymore and parents can't follow the kids because there is no guarantee that the kids will stay put. Kinda sad.

  2. We are having a reunion of my moms family this summer. There hasn't been one for several years and all the siblings are gone. But hopefully a lot of cousins will come!
I'm glad you and Joe were able to get to that one.
    Our church has regular potlucks.

  3. I don't remember any special community festivals in Los Alamos; everybody pretty much went to work, school, church and minded their own business. Looking back, it wasn't a particularly friendly town; isn't that sad?
Look at all of your happy faces! I don't think I've enough family members to fill a corner booth - much less, a reunion. On the other hand, what you said to 'Bunk' could well have come out of Tom's mouth. He's often lamented having taken his kids 1,000 miles away from all the extended family when they were young.

  4. 2 Crown him the Lord of life,
    who triumphed o'er the grave,
and rose victorious in the strife
    for those he came to save;
    his glories now we sing
who died and rose on high,
who died eternal life to bring,
and lives that death may die.

Another favorite hymn! Thank you for making me stop and think and sing along with you! Oh, family reunions! We never had them when I was young, and how I wish we had. I barely know my cousins on my mother's side, because they were scattered all over. Now my family tries to have one as often as possible. We have one planned in NC in September, Lord willing. This is primarily for the family I grew up in, my brothers and sister and all our kids, etc. My cousin from Ohio may be there too. As you know, our church has regular potlucks. I am sorry the one you came to was running out of food by the time you got there. Our 5th Sunday dinners are usually much bigger and a LOT more food! There will be one on July 30th. I hope you have a good time tonight at your house with your group. Take care and stay cool!

  5. What sweet memories you've been blessed with. I don't remember my former hometown (Titusville, Florida) ever doing anything on an annual basis. My new hometown County has a Pecan Festival and our town has a Christmas In July every year. One town over has a Blueberry Festival, and yet another has a Peach Festival. One can stay very busy here if one wants to! *lol* Living here is so much better than where I grew up there's no comparison.
    Love xx

  6. We had a family reunion about 15-20 years or so ago. So many have passed since then including my parents. Like you, I'm so glad we did it.

  7. Family reunions seem to be fading into the past. I am going to the one for my biological father's family in August. I've heard that about 60-70 are coming. Not bad, but only a fraction of those who could be there. My dad's family used to have a big one every year. They started in the 30's and continued on, missing only for a couple of years during WWII, until my aunt passed. None of the younger generation wanted to take it on. We just don't know each other like the older generation did and there wasn't much interest.
