Saturday 9...

Thanks to Crazy Sam for today's questions!  You can join in right HERE!

You'll Never Know

Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: You'll Never Know (1943)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Haymes sings he must have reassured his girl "a million times or more." Does it frustrate you when you have to repeat yourself?  If I have to repeat it more than a couple of times, yes.

2) The lyrics were inspired by a poem written by a war bride to her soldier husband. Have you ever been in a long-distance romance?  Yes.  My first husband was in Viet Nam for two years after we met. I saw him when he came home on leave and we married when he got out of the Marines.

3) This was the biggest hit of Dick Haymes, a popular singer in the 1940s. He got his big break when he replaced Frank Sinatra, who left the Tommy Dorsey Band to go onto bigger and better things. Are you a Frank Sinatra fan?  Yes, I do like Frank Sinatra's music.

4) During the 1940s Dick Haymes toured with the Dorsey Band, made hit records, had his own radio show, and appeared in nine movie musicals.  Yet by the early 1950s, he was broke. Part of it was that musical tastes changed, but more of it was that he enjoyed the nightlife and high living too much. If you wanted to shave unnecessary expenses from your budget, where would you economize?  Going out to eat would have to go first. Then my grocery shopping would be pared down.  I have actually already been doing that.

5) He blamed his money problems for his ongoing hypertension. How do you combat stress?  I don't get stressed often.  When I do, I pray and remember that God is in control.

6) Though he needed his voice to sing and suffered from high blood pressure, Haymes was a chain smoker. What bad habit would you like to quit?  Snacking.

7) Though raised since early childhood in the US, Haymes was born in Buenas Aires to an Argentinian rancher and his Irish wife. This enabled Dick to claim Irish citizenship later in life. Have you ever lived abroad?  No.  If not, do you wish to?  No. Not yet, anyway.  I love America.

8) Dick Haymes never regained his popularity as a singer. After touring Europe for years, he returned to the United States in the late 1960s and tried his hand as a dramatic actor, playing small parts on popular cop shows like Adam 12, McMillan and Wife, and McCloud. If you had to support yourself as a performer, would you be more successful as a singer, a dancer, or an actor?  I would be on skidrow.  Not good at any of those things.

9) Random Question: We're at the booth of a gypsy fortune teller. Would you be more embarrassed if she loudly and correctly guessed your age or your weight?  I freely admit that I will be 70 in December.  I will not tell you how much I weigh.  Keep your fortune-telling mouth shut!  LOL

Peace & hugs!  Jesus loves us!!

PS... happy birthday to my sister, Tammy, who turns SIXTY today.  My baby sister is 60.  How did that happen?

PSS... My first day on the job went just fine.  There was really no work for me to do but I snooped through files, met some of the staff and talked a lot with my new boss. My title is Administrative Secretary.

  1. Oh! Administrative Secretary sounds very important! But you are part time, right? I do hope it will be a fun job for you. Happy Birthday to Tammy! 60 is the new 40, right? 70 is the new 50. And tell that gypsy to mind her own business is right!! LOL. Wow, if I had to support myself in show business today, I guess it would have to be as an actor. My singing voice is not what it used to be, and even then it wasn't show business quality. I did do some acting in high school plays and even once in a community playhouse. I enjoyed it very much, but would not like the actor's life style. Oh dear, now that I think about it, I could not memorize all those lines anymore either...I can barely remember how to recite Mary Had A Little Lamb. LOL. I guess I'd be on skidrow with you! LOL. Have a blessed day!

  9. Yay ... I'm so glad to hear your first day went well! You were thought about! Skid row made me laugh out loud; but ya, I'll pull up my sleeping bag beside you. I don't know that I enjoy Sinatra's music as much as (I'm intrigued by) the man, the legend. His bio is still on my to-read list.

  12. Dear [newly appointed] Administrative Secretary: your answer that you pray and remind yourself that God is in control -- such excellent counsel for every one of us. I'm glad the first day on the new job was enjoyable.

Your admission that you'd be on Skid Row if your income depended on singing, dancing or acting -- that made me laugh out loud. You might be able to make it as a comedian. Your honesty is a comfort to all of us who share similar struggles.
