65 Love Affair
Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. 1) The first line of this song is, "I was a car hop." Car hops used to take orders and bring diners food to eat in their cars. Today, the drive-through lane has pretty much-replaced carhops. Think about the last time you went to a fast food restaurant. Did you order at the counter or at the drive-through window? At the drive-thru window.
2) Mr. Davis sings that his girlfriend was "bad with her pom-poms." Presumably, she was a cheerleader. Share one of your school's cheers. Ha! Do you know how many years it's been since I was in school? As a band member, we played "Hang On Sloopy" and the words chanted to the melody were "Hang on Lakers, Lakers hang on, hang on, hang on...." etc.
3) The lyrics tell us he believes that if he could go back in time, his girl would still be his. If you could travel back in time to your high school years, what would you enjoy doing again? Hanging in the Yearbook room with
4) During his performing days, Paul Davis sported a full beard and flowing hair. We're using that to check your powers of observation and recollection. Think of the last man you spoke to. Who was he? Describe his hair, and tell us whether he was clean shaven. Of course, it was Joe. He still has a full head of beautiful hair, white now instead of black, but gorgeous and always cleanly shaven!
5) Paul Davis was born in Meridian, MS, and that's where he returned to when he went into semi-retirement in 1982. Meridian's biggest employer is the Naval Air Station in Meridian. Do you know anyone who is currently in, or employed by, the military? Yes, our son and our nephew.
6) He was a pool player and a golfer. Which sport are you better at? Pool.
7) Sadly, he died in 2008, on the day after his 60th birthday. His best friend remembers him as "a homebody," who enjoyed staying up long into the night with his friends, playing and listening to music. Describe your perfect way to spend an evening. I'm old now. I enjoy visiting with friends for dinner and conversation but you will usually find Joe and me sitting in our recliners watching TV. We watch a lot of TV.
8) The publishing rights to "'65 Love Affair," as well as Paul Davis' bigger hits ("Cool Night" and "I Go Crazy"), are owned by another Paul -- Paul McCartney. Sir Paul's MPL Publishing Company has made him a very rich man, and Paul says that's because he chose to invest in music, something he loves. What about you? If you were to invest in a business or industry you love, which would you choose? LOL... Joe tells everyone that we invest in groceries! I guess if we had money to invest we would find a supermarket chain!
9) Random question --You're at a party and one of your host's best friends is a real egghead who tries to draw you into a conversation about paradigmatic counter existentialism. Would you: a) just listen politely while letting your mind wander; b) admit you don't know what the hell he's talking about; c) explain why you personally feel that the counter existential paradigm just adds unnecessary complexity to the individual's search for meaning? I will admit that I have no idea what those words mean and I don't really want to look them up just now so I would smile, nod my head and back away to find another conversation elsewhere!

giggling over investing in groceries...we did that very thing last night in anticipation of the winter storm, which is happening now. smiles. We have learned since we moved here to always stock up, when the city says no travel--there is no travel.Especially with the amount of snow we get, thanks to Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.
ReplyDeleteI recall Home Ecc .... we also had a girls and boys rifle club with a range in the school's basement. Hard to believe these days! We were State champs one year. More up my line! :)

ReplyDeleteOh, we had no choice but to take home ec too. I actually took 5 years of it and still am not a good cook! I can sew tho and clean so guess it paid off. If I had it to do over, I would invest in a medical practice or pharmaacy.

Home Ec? Oh, the horror stories! "Hang on Sloopy" used to be a favorite of mine ... as a matter of fact, I've a photo on my side bar of a huge tree limb barely hanging on. I named it Sloopy and figured as long as it was hanging in there, I could do the same (at work). Guess who caved first? LOL! Loved your answer to #9!

ReplyDeleteI remember the Hang On Sloopy cheer/chant too. Our band played that one a lot if I recall correctly. Great answers. We invest in a lot of groceries too. And yes, I took home ec and was an officer of the FHA (Future Homemakers of America). I already knew how to sew, (my mother taught me), and I kind of knew how to cook too. So I was bored in class. I wish I could have taken shop class too, but it never occurred to me back then because it just wasn't an option. Times sure have changed.
ReplyDeleteGreat questions this week. I remember singing Hang on Sloopy with my oldest brother. But he changed the name to Snoopy because that was his dog's name. He would dance with the dog in his arms as he sang this. Ah, good memories.
