It was my first weekend knowing I don't have to get up early on Monday and go to work. I have to note, though, that TECHNICALLY I'm still employed until the end of July 31st. Retirement is really effective August 1st. I have a vacation day today. Just a technicality....
Friday, I finished work at 12:30 and had the afternoon off for vacation time (like today). When I got home, Joe had an appointment at 2:00 but when he returned around 3:00 we decided to go shopping. Tuesday Morning was open. We walked every aisle and picked up a few doodads. Joe likes to shop, probably better than I do.
Saturday, we slept late and then went in search of pots. We decided to get five decorative pots to put in the bed in our front yard, rather than plant bushes. We can change out the pots with color (flowers, plants...) as we want. Who knew finding black pots would be so hard? Our shutters are black, so we want black pots. We tried Home Depot, Walmart, Lowe's and then decided to drive over to Plant City (next town over) to a place called Southern Hospitality. We hadn't been in over a year. They now carry the Magnolia line of home decor and furniture!
(Slight distraction...) I bought a Spinner for $2.99. That's the best price I've seen. There is so much talk about them and every kid has at least one it seems. I wouldn't spend $10.00, but $3.00 seemed okay. Guess who likes playing with it the most?
We didn't find pots there either, but we did find some living room furniture we really liked. We are in search of new living room furniture and a new mattress. Not in a hurry, but a must. It's past time. I'll keep you posted, but if anyone has advice on a good mattress, let me know. Our Beauty Rest pillow top is only five years old and it is shot already. Worst purchase we ever made (other than the sleep number bed, which was even worse). Whatever happened to the mattresses you could flip over every six months for better wear? Am I the only one who remembers doing that?
Yesterday we (again) slept in. Got up and had a quick breakfast and coffee and then headed out to the cinema for the 11:05 showing of Dunkirk. Joe wanted to see it. Wow. I cried twice. Tough movie.
I should note that I did not do laundry on Sunday. WHAT?!! I might do it today, or maybe tomorrow. Freedom!! LOL We read the paper and had another cup of coffee when we got home from the movies. I walked out of the kitchen a minute and came back to find the entire paper monopolized....
Helen and Cheryl called to see if they could come by. They brought a cake, a card, and a gift card to celebrate my retirement. Wow. Not expected but so much appreciated. They joined us for some of the cake and I sent some home with them. We had a nice visit.
Son Joe called us last night from the road. He is going to DC for the week and will get to see his brother (Jeff) while there. It's good that they can get together now and then.

Yay for retirement! You are going to love it as much as I do. It's like you can breathe again and really live. If you can't find black pots, maybe you could paint some. Or go online? Surely somebody has to have black pots.
ReplyDeleteMy husband, Joe, and I were just having the same conversation about mattresses. Does anyone make one that you can flip anymore? Our pillow top has lasted about 18 months and it's time for a new one. We are not happy campers.
Yes, we decided we could paint them if we don't find what we want. I have looked online too. We'll find them...no hurry.

ReplyDeleteMattresses: earlier this year we bought a Memory Foam mattress for our king bed and the guest queen bed. Best mattresses we've ever had. They were delivered as 2 very skinny cylinders in tight tight shrink wrap. Immediately as they were unwrapped by the delivery guys, the mattresses began in inflate on their own, like marshmallows. It was an interesting sight. They told us to not sleep on them for several hours, or preferably overnight (what?!!) so the decompression could complete itself. We slept in our recliners that night. They had a strong chemical odor (which we were told would happen) for the first couple of weeks, which I did not like. But yes, that went away. Putting the bedding on them helped with that.
These mattresses are very heavy, so turning them over every so often is out of the question. But thus far (6 months), they are the most comfortable mattresses we've ever had. Our guests like them, too.

DeleteI kept thinking of answers to questions you asked or something I wanted to coment on and then by the time I got to the end, I forgot...mercy, I'm getting more and more like my Mom. Here's what I do remember...the fidget spinner...I got one at Ollie's for $1.99, and I love that little gadget. Mattresses...we need a new one, too, and yes I do remember being able to flip the mattress...and I think that's the issue with today's big clunkers that you can barely even get into the house. Once you settle on one, please let us know! Happy Monday to you!

DeleteOh my the kitty playing with the fidget spinner!!lol So glad you are able to enjoy being retired Terri. I am sure it will be an adjustment but now you have the leisure to do things you enjoy. I agree about mattresses. We got ours at a local place which manufactures their own. It was cheaper and so far we like it. As to sofas. I need one as well and I dread shopping for one. I want a brown leather one this time round. I love fabric but they do not hold up for the long haul.

DeleteI've been thinking about you this morning and wondered how you enjoyed not having to get up and get dressed and out the door on time! Isn't that great??? I actually got up and got dressed to go shopping for a "wedding dress" today, but we turned around about 2 miles down the road and came back home. Hubby doesn't feel real well today, and it started to rain (although we aren't supposed to get the storm you are getting) so we just decided to do it another day. Suits me just fine. I hate shopping anyway. Can't help you with the mattress thing. I've heard about those big memory foam ones, and the people who have them love them. So it might be worth checking into. Enjoy your day, week, life!!!!! You are retired!!!!!

ReplyDeleteOhh Terri, I just had to start back here and read about the first moments of retirement! That long awaited day finally arrived. Had to giggle over the newspaper photo. That is so cute! I'm hoping to see Dunkirk soon. I read that some woman was complaining that it was an all-male cast. We've become so PC and so devoid of any knowledge of history? Anyway, congratulations on your retirement!!
ReplyDeleteDid you actually manage to sleep in? Some habits - like waking up early - are hard to break. Lovely cats. I would definitely cry at Dunkirk as my Dad was one of the soldiers rescued but he never talked about it.
