One Night in Bangkok
Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!
Saturday 9: One Night in Bangkok (1984)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) This song is from the play Chess. It's been said that the most successful players are fluid in their thinking. Do you consider yourself flexible or set in your ways? I'm pretty flexible, but the older I get, the more persnickety I seem to be about my weekly work routine. Hoping retirement (yes, that word) fixes it!!
2) Nigel Short, a real-life chess grandmaster, used to wear a t-shirt that said, "He who cares, wins." Do you always play to win? Or do you play board/card games or sports for the fun of it? I just play for the fun of it, which infuriates my partner if s/he plays to win. I really don't care. It's just fun to spend time together.
3) The singer is in Bangkok for an important tournament. He maintains that he doesn't mind missing the sights and dismisses Bangkok is just another "crowded, polluted stinking town." Do you find big cities exciting? Or do you think of them as noisy and dirty? Well, having lived in the metro DC area for 12 years and going there from small town USA and then back to bigger town USA , I find big cities exciting and am happy to visit them, especially the ones with a lively art culture, but they are noisy and dirty and I am always happy to get home to my smaller town.
4) Air pollution has reached serious levels Bangkok. Do you suffer from allergies, asthma or another condition that could be aggravated by pollution? Fortunately, no, but Joe has allergy induced asthma (well controlled now), so I know it is not fun to deal with.
5) To reduce traffic, commuters travel through Bangkok on ferries that make regularly scheduled trips up and down the Chao Phraya River. When was your last boat ride? Good golly, I hate to say 2007, but it really was that long ago. I grew up in a family that loved to boat on our Ohio freshwater lakes. We had a boat from the time I was five or six years old. I do miss it.
6) Round trip airfare between ATL and BKK is $1750. If we gave you a travel voucher for that dollar amount, how would you spend it? I would go back to Italy and would also try to visit Scotland, Ireland and Germany. Not interested in Bangkok at all.
7) The Holiday Inn Express in Bangkok has a McDonald's onsite. When you go somewhere new, do you find it comforting to be surrounded by what's familiar? Or would you prefer to try new things? I have only traveled 'across the pond' once so I can only draw upon that experience. I don't remember seeing any familiar fast food restaurants while in Italy. I want to try new things when I travel (even in my own state of Florida) so do try to find where the locals like to eat and where they hang out. You get the true 'flavor' of a place that way I think.
8) One of Bangkok's most popular restaurants is DID, which stands for Dine in Dark. The dining room at DID is 100% light free -- cell phones must be stored in the lobby to avoid distracting from the experience -- so customers eat their four course meal without seeing it. This heightens the diner's sense of taste and smell. When you prepare a meal, do you put a great deal of care into its presentation? Oh my gosh, don't ask Joe this question. We (most of the time) fill our plates from the pans on the stove! I DO try to present food nicely when we have company though (red faced and hoping I'm not alone!).
9) Random question: Think about your last professionally prepared meal. Did you dine in, carry out, or have it delivered? We dined in. We don't do carry out often and the only thing we can easily have delivered in Lakeland is pizza.
Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!
I hope you enjoyed the Saturday 9! Thanks for your visit today! Peace & hugs.

Good Morning, Terri. I hope you and Joe will enjoy your Saturday. Very interesting questions this week. I visited Germany when I was about 20 yrs old. I enjoyed the experience but these days, I am content to stay close to home! Like you, I would love to "see" Scottland if I could blink my eyes and just be there! lol Blessings, Mildred
ReplyDeleteWe eat out of pans all the time too. lol We use serving dishes only if we have company.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
That restaurant, DID, in Bangkok is a real novelty. Can't say it's something I would want to try. We aren't very adventurous here!
ReplyDeleteRe: #8 -- You're not alone. Last night I ate my reheated veggies straight from the microwaveable container. And I patted myself on the back because I remembered to eat my veggies.
ReplyDeleteInteresting Meme. I've never been to a foreign country, except for the Mexican border, Canadian side of Niagara Falls and Hawaii. Yeah, Hawaii is a foreign country in my opinion (don't get me started -- ha ha). I don't fly on commercial airlines anymore either (another rant). *wink* If that $1700 will cover the cost of a personal jet, then we're golden. Ireland here we come! ~:)
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your answers, and yes, we fill our plates from the stove very often! lol
ReplyDelete$1750 hmmmm? My first response was (like you) to visit Italy again. But, with all that's going on in the world -- and because I hate to fly -- I'll opt for a nice trans-Atlantic cruise.
ReplyDeleteThat restaurant 'experience' sounds just dreadful! LOL.
So interesting! I'm not much of a traveler. I love the comforts of home! :-)
ReplyDeleteI dish up our food from the pan on the stove, too. Growing up, every night my mother cooked and we put the food in serving dishes. Every. Single. Night. Hard to believe. With just two of us, there is no need. Depending on who the company is, we set the table very nicely and out in serving dishes. We've traveled many places across the sea, but I would use my travel vouchers these days and stay in North America. I prefer smaller towns, but have enjoyed our visits to cities. I prefer mountains or beaches or countryside.
