Hodgepodge! Another Walk Down Memory Lane....

Joyce has created another good Hodgepodge for us this week. I've been walking down memory lane all week, and this just plays right into it.  Thank you Joyce!! If you want to play along, go HERE and join in the fun!

1. Share something you appreciate (or something you appreciated as you were growing up) about your mother.  Everyone (seriously) will tell you my mom was (is) an Angel. I appreciate that she taught me how to cook, do laundry, clean the house, and how to have faith in Jesus. She worked full time at the local Post Office, but the rest of her time was always for the family. She fought cancer twice, and lost the fight at age 65. She was an amazing seamstress and made most of my clothes, including prom dresses and homecoming suits (yes, we wore wool suits for homecoming in the 60s). She was super creative and never met a craft she couldn't handle. She loved to sing, and was in the church choir for years and years. While visiting with us, here in Florida, near the end of her final remission, she didn't feel good, but she made me her red velvet cake, for my birthday. It was a tradition. I've never had red velvet cake since, that tasted as good as that one, made by her loving hands. I miss her every day.

2.  A quote most commonly ascribed to Plato reads "Necessity is the mother of invention." When did this last play out in your own experience?  Oh gosh, I am a BIG do-it-yourselfer. When we had the two guest bedrooms painted a few months ago, we couldn't get the new curtain rod holders to stay up. The molly things were too long for our drywall and smaller ones weren't working either. I told Joe we would just get those velcro hooks and drop the curtain rod into them. They worked perfectly - no more holes in the walls and they are the kind you can remove easily. We used them on three windows.

3. Share one of the earliest memories you have from childhood. When I was about four years old, our backyard flooded, and my swing set and my tricycle were sitting in water. I was very upset. I was standing on the back porch with my mom and grandma, looking at all the water. Grandma took her shoes off and waded into the yard, to retrieve my bike for me. I remember my mom saying "Mother, you'll ruin your stockings!" and she replied that she didn't care, she wanted to get my bike for me. Yes, I was spoiled.

4. When did you last 'hit the mother lode'? What was it?  Well, I rarely win any games of chance. I just don't have that lucky gene that some others are blessed with. I guess we could sort of say I hit the mother lode with next year's budget, since the Board approved it at the first meeting! That was pretty amazing.

5. What is/was your favorite dish mom made? Do you make that dish for your family/friends now that you're all grown up?  My mom was just THE BEST cook. Her vegetable soup was amazing. Her homemade noodles were to die for. Her red velvet cake was the talk of the town. My vegetable soup is good, but it isn't mom's. I've never tried to make her noodles. I would just be disappointed. I make her red velvet cake, but that magic touch is missing. Mom also canned delicious green tomato relish, that tasted so good with roast beef. I've tried making it from her recipe...not even close. She just had a magic ingredient in her touch.  Don't most moms?

6. Mother May I? was at one time a popular children's game. It required no equipment or parts to play. What was your favorite childhood game where you could just turn up and play-no gear needed?  Oh my, we played and played!! Mother May I, Red Rover, Red Rover, and Simon Says. All a blast!

7. Which TV mom (past or present) is your favorite, and why?  I loved June Cleaver the best, I think. Let It To Beaver was so good!  Donna Reed was good too, and I had such a crush on Paul Peterson!

8.  Insert your own random thought here.  I have been following a nostalgic theme this week in my blogs. Maybe it's because Mother's Day is coming (here in the US) and I've been thinking about mom a lot lately. Loved this walk down memory lane! If you aren't doing HodgePodge this week, leave a favorite childhood memory in your comment, please.  If you are, I'll read about it over there!

Thanks for stopping in!  I appreciate your comments and your friendships!  Peace, love & hugs.

  1. Again, I think you and I had a happy childhood in common. I was very close to my Mother and Grandmother. My Mother didnt cook, but since we lived with my Grandmother, she did, and was good at it! Happy Hump Day my friend!

  3. Oh Terri, I love the wonderful memories of your mom and your grandma. They both sound like outstanding women. But that doesn't surprise me. And it sounds like we played the same yard games when we were kids. :-)

  6. My mother was the greatest too! I don't think she really liked cooking a lot, but I could eat a whole plateful of her fried green tomatoes. I do remember that she made delicious doughnuts. I also remember one of my favourite dresses that she made had pencils, maths problems and apples all over it. She sewed ric rac or whatever it's called around the collar.

I'm good at finding solutions to things too. For example, I make my own washing soda for my homemade laundry soap and dishwasher tabs. Maybe I'm not the best at crafts but love doing them. As you can see, I can really relate to this week's questions.

  7. You have a lot of wonderful memories. Your mother sounds like an amazing woman. And who would have thought of using those sticky hooks for curtain rods? Very clever.
I feel like Mother's recipes aren't meant to be copied. They never taste the same.
