Sunday Sharing....

What did you love about the generation you grew up in?

My best memories from my childhood are of playing outside, with good friends from the neighborhood. I lived/grew up in a very small town, in central Ohio. It was one of those places where everyone knew you, and you knew them. All the moms were in PTA (Parent Teacher Association), there was a Mother's Club, and card clubs. Families knew families. Most of us went to the same church - United Methodist.  Yes - the town was that small.  One church, one traffic light, one school building for K-12.

We had a TV, but it was usually only on in the evening, after dinner. And, we all sat down to dinner, together, as a family. I was the oldest of four kids. We all had chores to do, but I had more responsibility because my mom and dad both worked. I learned to cook, clean, do laundry and make decisions (not always good ones) at a young age. I learned. I played.

I was in the band from 7th grade, through my senior year, but that was the only 'after school' activity I had. Kids today seem to always be busy every evening, with sports or dance, etc. We had time to play when I was growing up. No cell phones, no video games. We played.  We played outside.  We could get a snack at any of the neighbors' houses. We knew to stay out of trouble, or there would be trouble. But we played. We explored. We read books in tree houses. We became like Nancy Drew and knew there was a mystery to solve, somewhere in town. We imagined. We played.

Please tell me something you loved, when you were growing up!  Write your next blog about it!!

  2. My childhood was very similar although I lived in the country. I'm sure I've talked about the time my brother (a silly boy) stuck his head in a snow drift and cut his head. That's one time he didn't fool around walking home from school. No, we ran thinking he was bleeding to death! I always wanted to hurry home to do my homework so I could watch the Mickey Mouse Club. No, we didn't watch TV a lot and I still don't. As the song says, those were the days.

  3. My childhood was very similar to yours. In our little town in Ohio, we lived in a small neighborhood on a dead-end street where there was 26 kids total. After the homework was done, supper (with the family around the table) was finished and dishes done, it seemed that all the doors in the neighborhood flew open at once and out came the kids. We all played together in our little groups, usually girls with our dolls on a blanket under the shade tree and the boys, I'm not sure what they were doing. When the streetlights came on, we packed up and went inside. We were allowed to turn on the TV then, watch one show, then baths and bed. I was a great time to be a child.

  4. Loved reading about your childhood, and I do think being brought up that way, makes for more responsible, happy adults dont you? Kids rarely play outdoors and that is all we knew. Family was very close and important and still is in my world.
