I have been a lazy slug today! I didn't get up until 8:00 a.m., and then only because the cats were getting restless for breakfast. It is 2:00, now, and I've not done anything but take care of the cats, make us some breakfast and pull out cold pizza (left over from last night) for our lunch. It is nearly time to get cleaned up and go to church, for our Saturday Vigil Mass, at 4:00.
The Leadership Forum was WONDERFUL yesterday!! All the speakers were good, but Dr. Ben Carson was just amazing. Here is a link to our newspaper's story about him, that was in this morning's paper: http://www.theledger.com/article/20140308/NEWS/140309307/1134?Title=Carson-Draws-Crowd-at-Southeastern
The first speaker was AmyK Hutchens. She is a motivational speaker. I've heard her speak before, including at last year's Forum. A few of the notes I took during her talk included "...stop paying attention to the noise"; "...pay attention to what matters"; and "... your life today is a product of your habits and beliefs". Of course, she spoke for 40 minutes or so, and these don't mean much when you don't have the rest of her talk, but if you ever get the chance to see her, please do!!
The second speaker was new to me. Simon Sinek is a professor, author and leadership motivator. I enjoyed his talk, too. He spoke a lot on trust and cooperation, and creating a circle of safety within your organization.
The third speaker was another one new to me. Jonah Berger is also a professor. He teaches marketing and PR at the Wharton School of Business. He talked about using twitter, Facebook and blogging! Quite interesting!
The fourth speaker was Jon Meacham, who is a Pulitzer Prize winning author. I was totally bored with his presentation. He went on and on and on about dead presidents and never did make his point. He was the one disappointment of the day. He is an expert on Thomas Jefferson, and a talk on Jefferson would have been interesting to me, but he just rambled....I didn't get it. Maybe I was just anxious for Dr. Carson's talk!
Then, the speaker we were all waiting for...Dr. Ben Carson!! He was everything I hoped he would be, and more!! I had already read the book about his life, and saw the movie, Gifted Hands, starring Cuba Gooding Jr. See the movie if you haven't. Excellent. This man could be our next President. I loved that he said we should replace political correctness with civil discussion. He also reminded us of what Jesus said about a house divided. Excellent!!
What a blessing to have been able to spend the day with these amazing people. Here are some photos I took:
Outside, during a break.
Southeastern University is a Christian school. This beautiful fountain shows Jesus washing feet.
Looking back at the Chapel (where the Forum takes place), from the fountain.
Dr. Carson, on stage answering questions, at the end of his talk. We were blessed with excellent seats!

I'm glad you heard so many good speakers and that Dr Carson was as good as expected. I'd be happy with him as our next president.
ReplyDeleteThe only speaker I would have been interested in is Dr. Carson. It's a pity but I don't think he'll run for President. He seems like such a fine person. ~:)
ReplyDeleteI have had an lazy day, too.
ReplyDeleteLooks like this was a great forum. Glad you got to go!

Well I had a day that I had planned one way and it totally went another way! lol The story of my life these days. You were lucky to sleep late and then go to hear some great speakers. Love, sandie
ReplyDeleteWonderfull fontein, greeting from Belgium
ReplyDeleteEverybody needs a day to be a slug! You have been a busy bee lately. So glad the Forum was all you expected and wanted it to be.
ReplyDeleteAs busy as you always are I think a Saturday like you had is in order now and then. Hope you have a wonderful Sunday. Hugs
ReplyDeleteAttending the leadership forum sounds awesome, Terri! What an opportunity. But as far as Saturday, that sounds like my productive days lately. lol
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong with lazy Saturday mornings. I know how you feel about waiting for the speaker to make his point known. I've just tried to watch a video put up by one of my friends on FB. I couldn't watch more than a couple of minutes of it. Apart from the annoying accent, the speaker was constantly saying 'um, uh'. Glad you enjoyed the other speakers and found inspiration in their messages.
ReplyDeleteWe all like Ben Carson..and that Gen. West fellow. I have never heard of the others. Glad you had a nice time. Blessings
ReplyDeleteGlad you had a good day. Hearing these speakers had to be an uplifting experience. Just wondering if Prof. Berger said Twitter was a waste of time.
ReplyDeleteI like your pictures. Looks like you also had a beautiful day.
Carol, he did not think Twitter is a waste of time. All three social networks have a value to business. He did, however, caution about becoming addicted and made fun of people who can't put their phones down. Addiction to social networks is a real problem, right up there with smoking, alcohol and food addictions.
ReplyDeleteHappy to hear you enjoyed it. Hope the week ahead is a good one.
ReplyDeleteI think I would have been most interested in Simon Sinek. Trusting Circles rings bells for me.
