Lady Liberty
Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so to speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!
Saturday 9: Lady Liberty (2018)
... because it's 4th of July weekend.
Hear Barbra Streisand sing it here.

1) This song is a Valentine to the Statue of Liberty. Have you ever visited Lady Liberty? I have!! My senior class trip was to Washington, D.C., and NYC. To put it into context... that was 1970.
2) When you combine the lady herself and her pedestal, she stands 22 stories high. What's the tallest building you've ever been in? Probably the Empire State Building (102 stories), that same trip.
3) Her crown represents universal liberty with seven spikes for the seven seas. Without looking it up, can you name the seven seas? Nope. Not even going to try, past (I think) the Atlantic and Pacific...
4) The song was written by Desmond Child, a Cuban-American from Gainesville, home of the University of Florida. In 1965, a team of UF scientists invented Gatorade. Do you have any Gatorade in your home right now? No, and I think the only time I've had Gatorade was for colonoscopy prep (TMI - sorry!).
5) While best known for his work with KISS, Bon Jovi, and Cher, Desmond Child was nominated for an Emmy for his work on the Muppets 2003 holiday special. This morning, as we enjoy summer, what's the first Christmas carol that pops into your head? For some reason, the 12 Days of Christmas, and that isn't a carol, but it's what came to mind.
6) Desmond wrote this song specifically for Barbra Streisand. Watching her record it was a dream come true and he found himself standing very close to her as she sang. When he asked if he was "hovering," she suggested it might be better if he gave her a little more space. Does it bother you when someone stands very close or reads over your shoulder? Yes, it does.
7) Fireworks were introduced to celebrate the 4th because they represent the "rockets red glare and bombs bursting in air." When did you most recently sing "The Star Spangled Banner?" It's been a very long time. First of all, I can't sing it because I have about a five-note range, and that would be my second and third reasons as well. LOL
8) John Adams predicted the 4th would be observed with "pomp and parades." Does your community have a parade in honor of the day? Lakeland doesn't have a parade, but they put on a massive and amazing fireworks display on the night of the 3rd, and it's called Red, White, and Kaboom!! There was a live band and even room to dance. Our beautiful Lake Mirror, is right downtown. Pictures are from the Lakeland Ledger, yesterday's afternoon digital edition. I did not attend.

9) Celebrity chef Rachael Ray says she considers mini-hamburgers, or "sliders," the All-American food. What will/did you dine on this 4th of July? Our HOA had a potluck at the Clubhouse. They supplied the burgers and dogs, and everyone brought something to share. I took creamed corn (instead of the usual Jiffy casserole). I had a burger, some baked beans, fruit, and a bite of pasta salad. Someone counted and said over 80 people were attending, and a few more took take-out food home. It was all very good. I will post my pictures on Monday.
Peace and Hugs!
God shed His Grace on thee...

I loved these photos of folks in Lakeland enjoying the fireworks and music on Independence Day. They do know how to celebrate! Have a great weekend, Terri.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a good time at the potluck
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful fireworks! I love when they set them off over water. We didn't brave the crowds to go to ours, but we can see the highest ones from our porch and from the sound of (or rather lack of) the booms last night it wasn't a very big show this year.
ReplyDeleteI visited New York and Washington on a youth trip from church in 1978, much like your trip.
ReplyDeleteThe fireworks in Lakeland are beautiful over the lake!
I am glad you had a good time yesterday. All that food sounds good, smiles.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great show Lake Mirror put on! We no longer venture out to rub elbows (and sweat!), but I enjoy watching the festivities on television.
ReplyDeleteWe keep Gatorade on hand, but just the thought of it makes me gag. (lol)
Wow, those fireworks over the lake are really spectacular! What a great view of them! We didn't go watch our fireworks last night here in Interlachen. We were just too tired and it was hot and muggy and buggy, so we stayed home and stayed cool. I could hear them all around us, but was too lazy to go look out the windows even! I am glad you went to your HOA picnic. Sounds like it was fun and lots of good food! I hope you are doing something either fun or relaxing today! Looking forward to seeing your pictures later.
ReplyDeleteLove the fireworks! I lived in NY (central NY) for 52years but have never been to NYC!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos, Terri. I love the umbrella 🌂 in your last photo.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you all had a GREAT time!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great time y'all must have had! That's wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI don't like people who stands too close period unless we're really good friends. Makes me nervous.
Blessings. ❤️
Wow - 80 people! What a great turnout!! One of my biggest pet peeves is for someone to stand too close to me - especially if we aren't close friends or family.
ReplyDeleteI would love to visit the Statue of Liberty just to see if it is big as it always looks.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I have ever really been in any tall buildings, probably just one's about 10 stories high and even then I don't like looking down. The height makes me all queasy.
I have never tried Gatorade, I am sure it was banned here in the UK for a little while because of the additives in it. Eek!
Oh wow! Those fireworks are amazing, so pretty!
