The holiday weekend is behind us already! I hope those of you who celebrated enjoyed your time, no matter how you spent it!
Our HOA hosted a potluck 4th of July dinner at the clubhouse. The hamburgers, hot dogs, and all of the trimmings for them were supplied. Those who attended brought something to share. I made creamed corn. I steamed three bags of frozen corn in the microwave while making the cream on the stove with heavy cream, milk, flour, sugar, salt, pepper, and butter. It thickened up nicely, and the corn tasted quite good if I do say so myself. Here are some photos I took...
Someone counted around 80 people attending. I snapped this over my shoulder, with some folks still in line for food. There were two tables of food and one table of desserts.
On Saturday, I went to the funeral service for my friend (and Sunday school teacher), Lew. It was a lovely service, celebrating his life, which was spent in service to our country, to his family, and to his faith. Both of his sons spoke. I am always amazed when family members can speak at funerals. I am a big blubberhead and can barely control my emotions. I worked so hard to not break down at Joe's service that I barely remember it. No way could I even face the people to say thank you for coming. When I see someone cry, I cry. A major weeper. A lunch of sandwiches, salads, and fruit was served after the service. I stayed after that to help clean up and to wash some dishes.
I mentioned in a past blog that Lew's wife, Judy, worked with me at the museum. Her office was next to mine. She died about 15 years ago from cancer. Lew was in the Air Force, was a helicopter pilot (and later, a flight instructor), got three Purple Heart medals in Vietnam, and received a Distinguished Flying Cross medal. He worked for the City of Lakeland before retiring. Lew was 83. He was an Elder Emeritus at our church, and his theological knowledge will be missed, as much as he will be missed. He was a member of my small group so that empty chair at our gatherings will also leave an empty spot in our hearts. We do know where he is, and that is always a comfort. His legacy lives on.
I went to church yesterday, did my usual two loads of laundry, and am beginning to think about dragging out my suitcase to begin getting ready for my trip that starts this coming Monday. I'm already "packing in my head" trying to think of all the little things that are sometimes forgotten. It's not like I will be out in a desert. There is probably a Walmart where I am going. LOL
On a sad note, I know we are all devastated for the families grieving in Texas. That flood, in the middle of the night, is like a terrible nightmare. Prayers are still being lifted.
I have something going on each day this week, but it's not a crazy week. Thanks for your visit here today! Have a blessed week ahead!

Your potluck looks wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI'm so much like you when it comes to crying and funerals. I'm always a mess and if it's a family funeral and my sisters are near me, we are all crying together. I wouldn't be able to stand and speak either. Bob spoke at my Dad's funeral; shared about what a great Dad he was, was a prankster he was and about his faith. He did great and we were so happy to have that done. I'm glad you were able to be a Lew's funeral to honor him.
If you forget anything we can go somewhere and pick it up! But I know how it is to keep going over things in your mind so you don't forget. One more week!
I am so excited!!
DeleteIt sounds like Lew was such a nice man. I know you will miss him!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the photos of your neighborhood party! Are most people in your neighborhood 55+ or is your neighborhood intergenerational?
This is a 55+ community but lots of grandkids are around during the summer! We have a beautiful pool at the clubhouse.
DeleteYour community looks awesome as well as the food. I am sorry about Lew - I know he will be missed. Where are you going - Mari's?
ReplyDeleteMari's for a few days, then to Elaine and Jim's.
Deleteoops, let me see if I can get it right this time! Lew sounds like a great guy, now he's a great guy in heaven♥ He has left behind a blessed legacy. There were some serious eaters at the potluck, after seeing your plate I can understand why!!! Enjoy your day♥
ReplyDeleteWhen I see people cry, I can't help but do the same, Terri. Lew will be missed, but we can take comfort in knowing he is with Jesus. I've been, and still are, praying for all those victims of that horrendous flood in Texas. Have a blessed week!
ReplyDeleteLooks like a perfect weekend! Yes, funerals are very hard....
ReplyDeleteThe potluck at the clubhouse sounds like a great event. I've never had creamed corn before, it sounds delicious.
ReplyDeleteFab photos! I always look so serious when I am eating. hehehe
Your new shoes look fabulous.
What a beautiful sounding funeral service. Lew sounds like a wonderful man!
The potluck at Mas Verde was well-attended! Your plate looks so good, especially the Cowboy Beans. We don't eat beans in this house because somebody's body after his surgeries can't handle them well. I used to eat them all the time and miss them.
ReplyDeleteAll your food looks so yummy! True, I can't imagine the discipline it takes to speak publicly at a loved one's funeral. Even speaking aloud about the victims' of Camp Mystic's tragedy makes me weep.
ReplyDeleteTime's a-flying!
Oh, that food all looks SO good! YOur creamed corn sounds wonderful. Oh, I love cowboy beans. I used to get them at Hog Wild, before it burned. Now they have taken over True Grits, but I don't know if they have added the cowboy beans to their menu there. I'll have to check. I am sorry about your friend Lew, but yes, he is happy rejoicing in heaven with Jesus and also his wife, sohe wouldn't want his friends to weep for him...but I know you can't help it. I have also been so sad about the flood in Texas and thinking about all those precious children...and yes, I've wept over that. I know those sweet little girls are safe in the arms of Jesus today, but oh, how terrible the loss for their families. Praying for them every day. I am happy you have that wonderful trip to look forward to. I know you will have a wonderful time. I'm so happy for you!! Take care this week and don't overdo it. Save up your energy for all the fun you will be having. (((hugs)))
ReplyDeleteI too am a big blubbering fool at funerals. I really hate to go to them. I have had two under the age of my youngest this year. Those are really tough.
ReplyDeleteI love Toms shoes. They are so comfy. My fun ones have math symbols on them. A friend and fellow teacher gave them to me.
Take care!
What a full and heartfelt week you’ve had! From yummy creamed corn and red TOMS to honoring Lew’s amazing life
ReplyDeleteWell , thank you for sharing it all. Your words about him were touching. I’m so sorry for the loss in Texas too.
Wishing you a peaceful week and a smooth trip prep!
