Why Did I Choose You?
Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions!
Saturday 9: Why Did I Choose You? (1965)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) In this song, Barbra Streisand reassures her lover that, if she had it all to do again, she would still choose him. Tell us about a decision you've made that you never, ever regretted. I always say I have no regrets and that holds true here too. I own my choices/decisions and they got me here, where I am happy and content.
2) The music was composed by Michael Leonard, who studied classical music at Julliard and the Handel Conservatory of Music in Munich. Do you often listen to classical music? No, not very often at all but I don't listen to any music often, no matter the genre.
3) The lyrics were written by Herbert Martin. He taught music in the NYC public school system and during the summer worked in summer stock. That's how he met and began collaborating with Michael Leonard. Tell us how you met someone important in your life. I met Joe at a restaurant/bar on a Monday night where I was with my girlfriend, Lynne, after work, helping her get over the loss of her boyfriend/break-up. Joe & I started talking and haven't stopped since that fateful August 1, 1983. Lynne found a guy to talk with but went home before I did. She was one of my bride's maids when Joe & I got married in May 1985.
4) Ms. Streisand was a very good student, graduating fourth in her class at Erasmus Hall High School when she was only 16. One of Barbra's classmates was Neil Diamond. Do you have a favorite Neil Diamond song? I have always liked Neil Diamond's music... and his very blue eyes!! A favorite would be Love on the Rocks and Holly Holy and Sweet Caroline and five or six more.
5) While she didn't go on to college, she continued her education by attending two different acting schools simultaneously. Did you enjoy being a student? I did. School was always fun and pretty easy for me, grade school through college.

6) Barbra and her first husband, Elliott Gould, shared a New York apartment over a 5th Avenue restaurant called Oscar's Salt of the Sea. Elliott originated the role of Trapper John in the movie M*A*S*H. On TV, the role of Trapper was played by Wayne Rogers. Can you think of another role that's been played by more than one actor? Most of us more mature people will probably think of James Bond first.
7) Oscar's Salt of the Sea has ties to Sesame Street. Jim Henson loved their food and was amused by how inhospitable the owner, Oscar, could be. That's how Oscar the Grouch got his name. Which is your favorite Muppet? The Muppets were not on my radar and I can't say that I have a favorite. Cookie Monster is really the only one I know for sure what he looks like.
8) Back to Barbra ... She is a successful recording artist (nominated for 45 Grammy awards, winning 8) and an Oscar-winning actress, but she's suffered career disappointments, too. In 2010, she read the book Hidden Figures and tried to buy the rights so she could direct the film version. She lost out to fellow Brooklynite, director Theodore Melfi. In 2016, his movie of Hidden Figures was released. Did you see the movie or read the book? I have seen the movie about three times, I think. It is so well done and is about a subject that needs to be seen and heard.
9) Random question: Your best friend takes up painting and proudly presents her first framed work to you. You think it's atrocious. Would you hang it in your home anyway? I would hang it proudly. I have two of my mom's paintings and one of mine that aren't the best, but they are hanging on the wall.

always enjoy your Saturday post and most of the questions I could answer like you. Hope you have a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteGreat answers. I am not familiar with this song, so will have to listen to it. I always enjoyed Barbra Steisand's music. I used to try and sing like her, but well...here I am and there she is! LOL. I could almost believe I sounded like her in the shower. No one else seemed to agree, however. If I ever paint a picture, I am sending it to you! LOL. Great answers...this was fun!
ReplyDeleteI loved the movie Hidden Figures, Terri - so well done and revealing! And my favorite Muppet is Kermit the Frog. Watched lots of Seseme Street when my kids were little.
ReplyDeleteHave a blessed Saturday!
Great thoughts, Terri. I skipped doing this because I really don't care for Streisand.lol---have a great day friend.
ReplyDeleteThis was a fun set of questions! And your answers are always good too. I loved the movie Hidden Figures! Happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteSweet Caroline is a fave. Hidden Figures was a good movie. My son loved Elmo but my fave was always Oscar.
ReplyDeleteHasve a great day!
That is interesting about Jim Henson's creation of Oscar the Grouch. I have watched a lot of Sesame Street as a mama and a nana. And I do enjoy classical music. I often listen to it while I am driving because it calms me down.:)
ReplyDeleteI didn't think of James Bond. I was having a hard time thinking of anyone at all last night! Today as I'm reading everyone's answers I'm slapping my forehead and wondering why I didn't think of that. Hidden Figures was a wonderful movie. I'd like to read the book some day. I'm sure it has a lot more detail than the movie. Enjoyed your answers, Terri. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteInteresting questions... I will have to try and find the film.. I had not heard of it... That was a time when I was so busy not a lot of time for breaks.
ReplyDeleteI grew up on Sesame Street. I think it was kind of new when I was little. I love all of the Muppets and I still do. I think Elmo was new when I was in college, but I fell in love with him. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.

Atrocious, I consider the source. Something made with love and gifted to me is not atrocious. Like you, I would proudly display it and remember the love behind it. I loved school too, even after all these years my school memories are some of my best. I'm blessed to still have many friends that I went to school with.
ReplyDeleteI don't recall ever watching Sesame Street. On the other hand, I LOVE everything Neil Diamond's recorded. (Have seen him in concert 4 times.) I'd forgotten about Hidden Figures, but it sounds like something both Tom and I would enjoy. Happy weekend!
ReplyDeleteMy family has been Muppet Show fans for many years. My favorite is Kermit the Frog.
ReplyDeleteI like Neil Diamond too and Sweet Caroline is one of my favorites.
ReplyDeleteI was not such a fan of Sesame Street but we loved The Muppets. Animal was funny and so were the Grumpy old men.
I grew up so unaware of most actors or singers. I do remember when my youngest sister Rose was born (when I was 12), my oldest sister (19) said that Rose had a beautiful nose like Barbra Streisand. I had no idea who she was talking about and was in awe of her "worldly" knowledge, haha! I also remember when I first heard of Neil Diamond. I was with some friends when I was a teenager and and older brothers came to pick up one of the guys. He had his radio loud and said it was Neil Diamond. Again I had never heard of him, but acted like I had, lol!!
ReplyDeleteI do listen to music a lot, mostly Christian contemporary and praise and worship music.
I became very familiar with Sesame Street when Austin and Hunter watched it. Hunter LOVED Elmo.
