Bye, Bye Blackbird
Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants' posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!
Saturday 9: Bye, Bye Blackbird (1957)
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) In this song, Julie London complains about all the "hard luck stories" people are handing her. Did you more recently listen to someone else's problems, or share your own? I share my problems here on Blogger and you all kindly let me whine, but when out with friends (like at lunch yesterday) I listen.
2) She promises to arrive "late tonight." What time do you think is too late to drop in on someone? At our house, it would be after 8:00. We will be in our PJs by then!
3) Julie's nickname was "The Liberty Girl" because she was Liberty Records' first successful artist. The second was singer-songwriter David Seville, who had a couple novelty hits as "The Chipmunks." There were three singing chipmunks. Without looking it up, can you name them? Simon, Theodore, and ALVIN!!
4) Julie's love of music was shared by her mother. When Julie was a little girl, mother and daughter would listen to Billie Holiday's records together. What recordings did you enjoy when you were very young? I don't remember music when I was very young (except MICKEY MOUSE on the Mickey Mouse Club TV show) but I well remember the first Rolling Stones song (Satisfaction) that made me want to dance. I was 12 when the Beatles hit the Ed Sullivan Show so I remember the excitement of that, too.
5) She began modeling when she 17. Julie was working as an elevator operator when a talent agent saw her and decided she would photograph well. With the advent of push-button elevators, the elevator operator is a job that doesn't exist anymore. Can you think of another job that was once common but now is rare (or non-existent)? I remember going to a department store with my mom and when you gave the salesperson your money, she would send it up to the office in a pneumatic tube (like the drive-thru banks have now). Then your change would come whooshing back with a sales receipt. It no longer takes two people to make a sale in a department store! Those tubes crisscrossed all around the ceiling of the store and it was noisy and fun to watch!
6) Julie recorded more than 30 albums and was named "most popular female vocalist" by Billboard magazine in 1956. If you could see any entertainer -- male or female -- in concert, who would you choose? I am not a big fan of concerts and the crowds so no artist comes to mind right now that would get me excited enough to 1) buy an expensive ticket and 2) brave the crowds to go see.
7) She appeared in Westerns on both TV and in the movies. Have you ever dreamed of being a cowboy/cowgirl? No. Not a cowgirl but I did think I would love owning a horse ranch in Colorado, back when I was 12 or 13.
8) For six seasons, Julie played Dixie McCall R.N. on the show Emergency! The series was about Los Angeles paramedics and firefighters. Do you often hear sirens in your neighborhood? Actually, we do hear them quite often, usually two or three times a day because we live near a major roadway.
9) Random question: You're pulled over for speeding. Do you think you'd have an easier time talking your way out of it if the officer was a man ... or a woman? I have no idea. I was stopped for going 35 in a 25 and the officer thanked me for being so nice. I still got a ticket. I doubt a female would have let me go either.
Thanks for stopping in today! Happy weekend!!
Peace & hugs! God bless!!

Great Answers today. I once got a ticket way back when my husband was a State Trooper, but I didn't tell the officer that until after he wrote the ticket. He then said I should have said something as they try to stick together, and I told him that if I deserved the ticket I deserved the ticket regardless of who I was. (Which was true, but I sure was dumb! LOL. Not really. That's just how I think.)
ReplyDeleteGreat answers! Thank you for dropping by and leaving your comment on my blog. Have a great day Terri and Joe!! smiles
ReplyDeleteI missed out on those tubes in the department stores, but I can guarantee I'd have been fascinated with them. It's pajamas for us by 8:00 or shortly thereafter, too. We might as well be comfy to watch TV, right? Fun questions and answers today. Enjoy your Saturday, Terri!
ReplyDeleteI remember those tubes in dept. stores and were fascinated by them. 8 pm would be the time I would be closed down and in my jammies for the night too. I am not big on concerts or crowds. Hope you and Joe have a good weekend.
ReplyDeleteLove your answers, Terri. We never had dept stores in our area so never saw the tube system. I haven't had a ticket since I was 25 and drove a Corvette. lol xo Diana
ReplyDeleteI remember using those pneumatic things at GA Baptist when I was a student. We sent doctors orderes to the pharmacy etc and we receiced Lab work reports in them. The Good Old Days.
ReplyDeleteWhy don't I remember those pneumatic tube-thingies? Gosh, I'd quite forgotten the Mickey Mouse club. One of the most embarrassing moments of my life? On Monday morning while in Junior High the teacher was talking about John, Paul, George and Ringo and I had no idea what she meant. Of all the Ed Sullivan shows to miss!
ReplyDeleteI just vaguely remember the name Julie London, Terri. I'll have to Google her - lol! Yes, I got a ticket once for "rolling" through a stop sign. I was so upset with myself that I cried. I'm so very careful when I drive now.
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
I never saw a store with that tube system. Sounds interesting.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
Wow what a memory with those pneumatic tubes!! I loved going to the store and watching them...... Howdy Doody comes to mind...such fun. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI had loooong forgotten about the pneumatic tubes! But yes, I do remember them in downtown Tulsa when I was a little girl.
ReplyDeleteAs for music when I was very young, always always church hymns. Then for secular radio music, I remember the McGuire Sisters (trio). Daddy flew them on his plane one time and said they were very nice.
I always enjoy your answers. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteI am the same with #1. I share a lot on my blog, but listen to my friends. It is rare for to share very much with friends. #6 too. I just do not care about concerts anymore. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend.
