Saturday 9 has Chestnuts Roasting...

The Christmas Song

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions!

Saturday 9: The Christmas Song (1961)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) The lyrics mention "chestnuts roasting on an open fire." Do you often eat chestnuts?  Not often, but I love them and try to always have them at Thanksgiving and Christmas! Yum!!

2) There's a reference to Jack Frost, too. Does cold weather help you get into the holiday spirit?  Not anymore. I've lived in Florida for 30 years now.

3) Nat sings that turkey helps to make the season bright. We just had it last month for Thanksgiving. Do you enjoy turkey all year round? Or do you consider it primarily a holiday dish?  I only roast a turkey at Thanksgiving but do enjoy turkey from the deli for sandwiches all year round.

4) This song was published as "The Christmas Song," but people often refer to it as "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire" or "Merry Christmas to You." When you think of this song, which title comes to mind?  Chestnuts Roasting...

5) Nat King Cole had a big hit in the 1950s with "Mona Lisa." The ballad compares an enigmatic woman to the da Vinci painting, which hangs in the Louvre. The Mona Lisa has been called the most instantly identifiable painting in the world. Can you think of another famous painting that you recognize on sight? (Extra points if you include a picture!)  How about The Last Supper by Leonardo Da Vinci...

6) Best remembered today as a singer, Cole was also an accomplished composer and jazz pianist. Do you like jazz?  I do enjoy jazz but prefer what is usually called soft jazz or cool jazz.  Jazz can get pretty noisy and penetrates that last nerve after a while.

7) The only Christmas card Sam has received so far this year is from her dentist. She never sees Dr. Douglas socially. In fact, she hasn't seen him since her annual check-up last March. Have you received many cards this year?  We have received quite a few so far and it makes me anxious because I don't have mine done yet.

8) When did/will you start holiday shopping this year: Christmas Eve, Thanksgiving/Black Friday, Halloween? Earlier than that?  I don't do much holiday shopping. This year I had a few things ordered before Thanksgiving.

9) This time of year is big for charitable fundraising. Here's your chance to plug a cause or organization that's near and dear to you.  New Paths Horse Sanctuary!  Our son and daughter-in-law started a horse rescue over a year ago and have 8 horses, 3 minis, and 3 goats.  They can use all the monetary help they can get. It is expensive to feed them all and keep the veterinarian bills paid.

Thanks for your visit!!   Peace & hugs!!

God bless!!

  1. Oh good grief! Turkey lunch meat. How did I not think of that?! I eat the stuff all the time. I guess I must not think of it as "real" turkey. lol
Interesting to see what art everyone is coming up with!
Have a wonderful and blessed weekend, Terri! (and send some warm air up this way!)

  2. Loved Nat King Cole and his songs. We have turkey for Thanksgiving but not at Christmas. Am through with what little shopping I had to do - we only give to the grands. I didnt mail Christmas Cards this year due to budget but got many from the 'post office' at church. Hope you have a great Saturday.

  3. Love that old song. When we lived in Ohio we had a chestnut tree, and I would race the chipmunks every morning to see who could gather the most nuts. I think the chipmunks won! But the few I did gather I roasted in the oven, and I also put some in my stuffing at Thanksgiving. It was very good! We also just eat turkey at Thanksgiving, and usually either ham or (in the last couple of years) we've had lasagna for Christmas dinner. We will probably do ham this year...I am working on my Christmas cards slowly. I don't seem to have your address...could you send it to me via messenger? Thank you!

  6. One of my favorite Christmas songs. And who does it better than Mr Cole. Turkey is one of my favorites as well. I just had some smoked turkey from the new BBQ place that opened nearby and it was delish.

  10. I am so excited to see you have had chestnuts! I have never seen them except in movies. The Last Supper is a beautiful painting! My Granie had it in her dining room. I think my Uncle must have gotten it when she passed away. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend!

  11. I've never had a chestnut!
We eat a lot of turkey, but only have the whole bird at Thanksgiving.
