Saturday 9... God Bless America

Thanks to our Saturday 9 hostess, Crazy Sam Winters, for this week's 9 questions!  You can join in

Saturday 9

God Bless America

Saturday 9: God Bless America

Unfamiliar with Deanna Durbin's rendition of week's tune? Hear it here.

Memorial Day is the federal holiday designated to honor American service people who died in battle.

1) Memorial Day was introduced after the Civil War. Originally called Decoration Day, this is when memorials, as well as the graves of veterans, are to be decorated with flags and flowers on this day to show our appreciation. Is there a war memorial in your neighborhood?  Not in my neighborhood and they removed the Confederate soldier memorial from our central park. Ridiculous.

2) Andrew Johnson, our 17th President, was in office the first time Memorial/Decoration Day was celebrated. Have you ever met one of our 45 Presidents?  I have never met one of our Presidents in person, but I was close enough to smell Trisha Nixon's perfume when I was on a White House tour and she walked through with her Secret Service guys.  I also met Sara Palin in person at a leadership conference, in 2013, at Southeastern University.  I even made her laugh because her daughter was on Dancing With the Stars and I told her I voted for Bristol.  She is a little person and had on FIVE-inch heels!!  That's as close as I've come to any politicians other than some of our locals here in Lakeland.

3) According to the AAA, more than 30 million Americans will hit the road this weekend and drive more than 50 miles. Will you be traveling far from home this weekend?  We are not planning any road trips during this holiday.

4) Memorial Day kicks off the summer season. What's your favorite picnic food?  I like ALL picnic food, for goodness sake!  Hamburgers, hotdogs, potato salad, deviled eggs, baked beans... don't forget the watermelon and homemade ice cream!  I mean, come on!!

5) As you answer these questions, is there an air conditioner or fan on?  Both!

6) Though she's belting out one of America's best-loved patriotic songs, Deanna Durbin was born in Canada. Is there anyone in your family or circle of friends who wasn't born in the USA?  Joe's dad and his grandparents on both sides were born in Italy. We have several Canadian friends who live here in Mas Verde.

7) No longer a household name, Ms. Durbin was once one of the biggest stars in the country. One of her most popular films was 1937's One Hundred Men and a Girl, which was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. Recommend a movie that you really like, but don't think many Saturday 9ers have seen.  I am pretty sure I blogged about it months ago, but we stumbled upon "The Killer Donuts" while channel-surfing one evening and watched the entire movie. It was campy and hilarious!!

8) Back in 1938, Deanna Durbin had her handprints cemented in front of the TCL Chinese Theater on Hollywood Blvd. Have you ever visited that Los Angeles tourist attraction?  I have never been to California nor do I have any desire to visit California.

9) Random question: What food did you hate as a child, but enjoy now?  There were no foods I hated as a child. We were good eaters and that includes all the vegetables my dad grew in the garden.  He was a hunter, so we also had venison and rabbit now and then. I only get picky about anything slimy or rubbery... okra, snails, oysters...

Thanks for your visit!!  Peace & hugs!!

God bless!!

  3. Never want to set foot in California, either, Terri - what a muck of a place! And okra? Only if it's fried.
That's cool, too, that you got a photo with Sarah Palin; never knew she was that short!
    Blessings!

  4. Good morning! That's so cool about seeing Trisha Nixon AND meeting Sarah. Wow! Love your list of picnic fare … I'll bring the Conecuh sausage! I've been in n' around California, but would have to be senile to consider ever going back.

  5. 5 inch heels? Really? That's painful! How cool that you met her and even had your picture taken together! Too bad she's faded out of the picture...but maybe that's a good thing for her and her family. No traveling for us this weekend, but some friends are passing thru on Monday and spending the night on their way to a conference in Orlando. So I've got work to do to get ready! have a great weekend.

  6. I did not like that they took down the statues of the confederate soldiers. It is part of history. It happened.
I love fried okra! YUM! Loved your answers! Have a nice Memorial Day weekend!

It is baffling. Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

I lived in Richmond, Virginia for a long time. There is a street there filled with war monuments (Monument Avenue). I wonder how long it will last.

  8. The Killer Donuts???!!! lol! I'm with you on the removal of those statutes - so ridiculous. So many things getting more and more so. That is so cool that Joe's grandparents came from Italy. I'm with you on the food for summer holidays and also no desire to visit California. Great pic of you with Sarah Palin. I hated the way she was treated. So much injustice!

  9. I like picnic food too! I also wish I could go to CA as my sister lives near LA and I don't get to see her often. You met Sarah Palin - impressive - and she was tiny??? Short. Our air has been on since March. We are staying home this summer too. Have a nice Memorial Day. sandie♥

  10. Had your picture taken with Sarah Palin! That's impressive!

I didn't like cheese as a child, or avocados but now I like them both a lot.

    Enjoy your holiday weekend!

  11. I think it is ridiculous as well to remove those statues. I agree with Sandi...if we don't teach history we will be making the same mistakes. Baffles my mind!
I saw Trump!!! On his first trip to Pensacola, my husband, daughter and I went. My son was for him from Day 1 on his announcing. We had all planned to go, but he was coaching at the time and couldn't get away. IT ended up that only Lindsay and I got in. Jeff forgot that he had an expensive pocket knife in his pocket and had to go back to the truck to put it up. That shows just how many people were coming. IT was standing room only in the civic center which is rather large. He used no notes and was actually quite impressive with that. I thought it rather funny that members of Joe Scarbrough's family were there isn support of them. Anyway, I am really glad I went.
