Unless you want pictures of us at physical therapy or a doctor's office, I'm afraid all I have for you this week is a few more photos from the farm (Joe's client). I did not get to walk all over to visit the animals because my knee is screaming these days. I'm not sure I can make it to August before I get more cortisone. It actually feels like it is out of line and needs an adjustment. I think I'll call our chiropractor and see if he does knees...
Anyway, I sat myself down under their deck at the (huge) picnic table and just let the dogs come to me. Then, because I was sitting quietly while reading my book (Patricia Cornwell), the guinea hens decided to parade through. They make the loudest and most obnoxious noise I have ever heard, but they are also quite fascinating!
They eat bugs and are quite good at cleaning the yards and pastures of ticks, fleas, flys, grubs, (even snakes!) etc. Perhaps everyone should have a flock in their yards! Pulled these following tidbits from Google...

So glad you got some country time to rest and read! My daddy had guineas at one time and I remember how noisy they were. But yes, they are good for pest control and that says a lot out in the country.

ReplyDeleteMy brother had a flock and they sure did the job. They would go round and round the house! Not bad eating as well. But we don't hear much about them. Surprising since they are easier than chickens and as you say, don't cause as much damage.
ReplyDeleteHmmm, I'm thinking I need some Guinea hens, but I'm afraid the coyotes would have them for dinner before they get to have their own dinner of ticks in our yard. We do have so many ticks here, I seriously wish we could do this. Wow. I am sorry about your knee. I do hope you can get some relief soon. I know that is no fun in this heat to also have pain. Does getting in the pool/hot tub help? Praying for you to find some relief. Take care and don't overdo it.
ReplyDeleteI remember when a guinea hen was right outside our house (when we lived near Lititz in Lancaster County) making a very loud noise. I had never seen one before and thought it was a turkey. I posted a picture of it on my blog and I think someone told me it was a guinea hen. I do remember the loud noise.

Our local Zoo has a bunch of them running around. Yes they are very loud.

ReplyDeleteMy neighbor used to keep a couple of guineas. I love chickens, but hated the noise those made. I'm glad she gave up raising them.

Victor, they do fly, but not very well and no... they don't come in plastic. You would have to make arrangements at a farm store for babies to raise. LOL You always make me giggle!
DeleteAre these human babies? I wanted Guinea Fowl, preferably ones that would not fly away otherwise I would not know where they are. Also, plastic ones are cheaper to feed.

I have now had time to do some research locally. There are no shops round here that sell ticks, beetles, fleas, grasshoppers, or crickets to feed these birds. The pet shop sells snakes but they are expensive. Will these birds eat an anaconda? The pet shop owner advised me against it.

I would be interested in having one for killings ticjs. I wonder if they also eat chiggers? Teri, I'm so very sorry about your knees. Our knees are so important and when a part of our oabody starts screaming out at us, it's time to get help.

DeleteI love the farm photos as I don't get to see a farm much at all. There was a sheep ranch by me but Walmart bought the farm and put up a store on it. So sad :(.
