Backing up to Thursday, there isn't much to report other than my regular four-month check-up with my doctor. She is happy with me losing a little more weight and my bloodwork looked great. She actually took me off one of my meds! Hooray!
Friday we did some grocery shopping and I started preparing for our dinner party, scheduled for Saturday evening. Joe has been busy learning his new accounting software that he is sharing with our son (son is sharing with him, actually). The software he has used for years is too expensive for just the few clients he is finishing for 2017. It must be going okay because he hasn't been grumbling!
Saturday morning I hit the ground running. I made meatballs and cut up some Italian sausage to bake in the oven. It has been a long time since I handmade meatballs. The ones we buy frozen at Sam's Club are good and are what I usually use, but we wanted this meal to be a little more authentic. I started the sauce while the meat cooked.
When the meat was done, I put them all in the sauce, on low, to simmer a few hours. I then started the ricotta cheese pie for our dessert. It has been years since I made a ricotta cheese pie (one of Joe's favorites). The filling takes 12 eggs (makes two pies) and the sweet crust takes another four eggs. They baked for an hour and turned out nice thank goodness. I didn't have an alternative planned. Closer to time for the guests to arrive I put the lettuce salad together, prepared an anti-pasta to munch on before dinner and got the garlic bread ready for the oven. The stuffed shells (purchased at Publix and just as good as my homemade ones with a lot less trouble) went into the oven and I had time to relax a bit before our neighbors arrived at 5:30.
For someone who photographs everything, I didn't take one photo of the table, food or people.
Sharon and Bob live on our west side; Jill and Murray live on our east side; Anne and Paul live across the street from us. We have all become good friends. Jill and Murray are Canadians and are only here for three months. We like them a lot. The evening went very well! The food was good and seconds were had by all which is always great to see. I also served pizzelles with the pie for dessert and Jill raved about them. She wants to get a pizzelle iron now and asked to come over to watch me make them next time I do them, which was yesterday.
We talked about Mazarro's Italian Market while conversing at the table and we are now planning a caravan for the eight of us to go over one day soon! That will be fun!
When I went out yesterday to get the Sunday newspaper, there was a thank you note from Jill clipped to our railing and I found a painted rock laying on the driveway beside the newspaper. I'm not sure who gave us the cute rock, but it sure made me smile when I saw it! Someone knows me!
Sunday we were supposed to go to St. Pete with our friends, Al and Theresa, but we postponed the trip because of the rain in the forecast. That left me with a laundry day and I made the pizzelles. Jill came over with her cup of tea and watched the process for a few minutes (and ate one while it was still warm). She already found a pizzelle iron online and is excited to get it now. It was nice to just kick-back a bit on Sunday.
The week ahead will be busy and we are getting visitors on Wednesday afternoon for an overnight visit with my other BFF, Karen, and her hubby Lee. We sure are looking forward to seeing them again and for them to see our new home! This is Karen and Lee on a previous visit at our old house, out by our pool.
I have taken a few photos of our cats over the last week or so. I'm always happy to show your our fur-babies!
Lilly, our gray tubby cat (yes, I said tubby-she weighs a pound more than Vinny!)
Vinny, our sweet boy.
Lucy, crashed on Joe's lap.
Happy Monday and I wish you a good week ahead! Thanks for your visit! Peace & hugs.

It sounds like you are a pro with Italian cooking, as well as with entertaining!
ReplyDeleteThe painted rock is really neat. Someone did a good job with that!
Well, not a pro by any means but I do enjoy having friends over for dinner. I don't like cooking for just two.
DeleteI'm sure they appreciated the homemade Italian meatballs, as well as the ricotta pie and pizzelles. It shows a lot of effort on your part and that makes it special. I would love a piece of that pie for breakfast - could you send some 😉
ReplyDeleteWish you lived close enough to give you some! We are still eating the second pie.
DeleteI just love the pet rocks, smiles. Your ricotta pie sounds really good, Terri. Hope you have a beautiful week, my friend. smiles
ReplyDeleteWishing you a good week too, Linda!
DeleteCongrats on your good doctors report Terri...slow and steady wins the race. I am trying to get back into my 8000 steps per day. I will be glad when I can walk outside again. I am keeping all my rocks on a shelf at Grimmwood. They are so fun aren't they?
ReplyDeleteThe rocks are fun and this is the first one I've "found". I don't want to put it back outside, so am keeping it!
DeleteThat rock is adorable. Ive been wanting to start painting some.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it crazy when you don't get pictures of events or activities. Feels so weird. Haha
Yes, it does feel weird to not have photos. We have a flower bed (no plants) out front that is full of smooth rocks. I should gather a few and give it a try!
DeleteAll this talking of food made me hungry. I am quite a good chef in the kitchen, you know. Our dog agrees! No one else does.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Yum yum and more yum! You made me hungry. My retirement community provides us meals if we so choose. I took the one meal a day plan. Yesterday was the best Prime Rib with wonderful side vittles. I had gotten out of the habit of cooking but with your descriptions, I am getting in the mood once more! :)
ReplyDeletePrime rib?! Now that really sounds good!
DeleteEverything you cooked sounded so good, and I know it was. Retirement definitely agrees with you, and making new friends along the way is nice too. Love seeing the fur babies, and the rocks are so cute. Someone already knows you very well. Have a good Monday and new week ahead.
ReplyDeleteWishing you a good week too, Linda! Hugs.
DeleteMmmm all that food sounds so yummy. Glad you had a nice time. The rock is very cute!
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
Wishing you a great day too, Kim!
DeleteAh what a shame no photos. It all sounds delicious and I'm glad it went so well.
ReplyDeleteCould kick myself for not getting photos!
DeleteWow! I am so impressed with the meal you prepared! I've never heard of a ricotta pie. I can only imagine how good that must be! Everything sounded delicious! You are truly blessed to have found such great neighbors and to have so much fun together. Your fur babies are so sweet. And I love the painted rocks! Such fun. Thank you for making us smile!!
ReplyDeleteI prefer a custard pie to the ricotta pie but they are very much alike.
DeleteThat sounds like a scrumptious meal! I never heard of ricotta pie but I know I would like it. Glad you are having such fun with your friends there. Glad you get to see Karen and Lee again. I remember the last time they visited you. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteWe are so blessed, Mari. God is good!
DeleteI'd say that's a sign of a GREAT dinner party when you're so absorbed in the here and now not to take pictures! (Unfortunately, now I'm salivating for some Italian sausage!)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you don't get tired of showing us your fur babies, because I love seeing them!
Thanks, Myra. It really was a very fun evening. We are so blessed!!
ReplyDeleteDo you have a good meatball recipe? I would love it.
ReplyDeleteI also use the frozen meatballs, I don't remember the last time I made my own. Just a sign of the times!! Love the rock, it's cute and made me smile. I bet you smiled too when you saw it laying beside your paper!!`
ReplyDeleteI am so impressed with the meal you prepared for so many people!!! I do make meatballs quite often, because Austin is a sneaky eater, and that's something he really likes. Lori doesn't let me get away with store-bought ones, haha!
ReplyDeleteYou fur babies are so beautiful.
Isn't it nice to be retired and able to do all these great things? I know you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine. Sounds like a wonderful get together. You know the food is good when everyone takes seconds. I love pizelles but I buy mine. I'm not as ambitious as you. That rock is so cute!
