I was sifting through more photos the other day and found this old, yellowing newspaper clipping. I'm sure my grandma cut it out and saved it. She was always finding a cartoon or article to send to me - usually about grandmas. I have no idea of the date, or the newspaper it was clipped from, but it is obviously written from a child's perspective. I hope you get a chuckle from it, like I did....
You may have to click on it to be able to read it.
Then I found this photo of Tristan's first haircut. The barber is (was) Joe's barber, Keith Spurlock, who just retired after nearly 60 years of barbering. Keith owned the barber shop, at Southgate Shopping Center, where the movie Edward Sissorhands was filmed. He also cut Johnny Carson's hair once. Keith's daughter, Teena, is the barber who cuts my hair. I was just there last night!
HERE is a link for the story about his retirement.
Our daughter-in-love, Kathy (then was our daughter-in-law) and our sweet Tristan, with Keith.

About 30 miles to the southeast, in Lakeland, you’ll find the wonderful 50s-style shopping mall. The beauty salon, where Joyce (Kathy Baker) tries to seduce Edward, is in the Southgate Shopping Center, 2500 South Florida Avenue.
We shop at the Publix in this shopping center frequently. The barbershop is long gone. The one where I go now, and where Keith worked when he retired, is closer to our downtown, in an area called Dixieland.
Thanks for peeking it at my throwback photos and stories today! Peace & blessings

I did get a chuckle from the sweet article. I also like your little verse about changing along the side. Words we can all use. Have a great one, Toots.
ReplyDeleteThe writer of the newspaper article certainly portrayed 'grandmother' to a 'T'. I lived with and loved my maternal grandmother, along with my Mother, two aunts and 1 uncle until I was grown, and now I am 'one of those'! Tristan was a cutie in the picture. Memories are happy moments.
ReplyDeleteReading this made me think of my grandmother even though she did work on their farm when we were little. She didn't help with the crops I don't think, but she did everything else and always had 3 cows to milk. How I loved going to her house!
ReplyDeleteWonderful memories, Terri.
What a cute article! The picture is adorable too. I bet it feels like yesterday.
ReplyDeleteThat was a cute article. That's neat that a movie was filmed near you. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteThank you for giving me my morning 'smile' with that article :)
ReplyDeleteWe were just talking about our town's barber, the other day. He cut my husband's hair, and our two son's when they were growing up. I'm thinking he'll be retiring soon, too.
Your throwback pictures are fun. Real Barbershops are harder to find these days. I wish there were more of them for my guys; and I wish beauty salons were not such public places (like in full view inside malls). I like to go into Publix grocery stores whenever I am visiting in Florida. That was my store of choice when we lived there. Happy Thursday!
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute article. Of course I had to go dig up a pic of our grandson getting his first haircut. So sweet. Happy Thursday.
ReplyDeleteI think whoever wrote the article had us pegged right. Except for the teeth and gums coming out. hahaha
ReplyDeleteWe used to have several of the old-fashion barber shops in town that were men territory only. But sadly, they all faded away, except one. His son and daughter own the shop now. If they ever close up, Bob will be an old hippy with a pony tail. He says he won't go to a beauty shop. Talk about old fashion. hahaha
