Memory Monday.....

Memory Monday is a three-week old MEME by Retired Not Tired blogger!! Today's subject is "My First School", and I hope you have some fun by joining in!!

My very first school would be kindergarten. It was a private kindergarten, at a church. I remember my teacher was Miss Hill, but I'm sorry to not remember the church at all. It wasn't the church we attended, but was closer to my grandma's house.  Kindergarten was not part of the public school system "back then".  This is kindergarten graduation...I was the tallest girl, even then!

So, my first school memory will be about Washington (Court House) Elementary School, where I attended grades one through three.  The school building was Washington High School, and is where my mom went to high school, graduating in 1948, later turned into an elementary school.  My first grade teacher was Miss Gibson, second was Mrs. Everhart, and third grade was Mrs. Merriweather.

I walked to school everyday. Back then, parents didn't have to worry too much about kids being kidnapped on their way to school. I really don't ever remember my mom walking me to school, or walking with a bunch of other kids. On the way home from school, there were more of us together, though. It was a good little hike. I won't say it was five miles in knee-deep snow, but it was more than a few blocks to school.  In the 1950s, most families only had one car and we were no exception. That's when the milk man came to the door, as did the bread man. Two staples families couldn't do without, and moms had no way to get to the store, until dad came home.

The fun part of coming home from school was walking right past a penny-candy store every day. Once a week or so, I was given a nickle or a dime so I could buy candy on the way home. What a treat that was. If you chose wisely, you could get a big bag full of sweets, because quite a few selections were two for a penny!!  Watermelon slices, wax lips, wax bottles filled with liquid, licorice shoestrings, orange peanuts, strips of buttons on wax paper....not a thing that wasn't 90% sugar, but I remember the way the floors creaked (wooden), I remember the smells, and I remember the parrot behind the counter that squawked at everyone!!  You would not see that in a store today, with health department rules!  Later, it was converted to an ice cream store (long past my third grade time). I remember being sad that the candy store was gone.

Washington High School, and later Elementary.

First grade. I don't seem to have a class photo from first grade.

Second grade class. Posted before, but that's me - tallest blonde girl in the top row.

Third grade class. Again - tallest blonde student in the top row.

Pages from my mom's senior year book. She is top left, second photo.  I pulled this, and the picture of the school building, from the internet. Did you know high school yearbooks are on-line now?

Helen Louise Cameron. She was so pretty. The year was 1948. She and dad were married in 1949. I was born in 1951. She did have a miscarriage the year before me.

I was compelled to include my mom in this memory, since my first school was actually her high school.  The city changed school districts, and in fourth grade, I was sent off on a school bus each morning, to Eastside Elementary. I was there one year only, Mrs. Gablehouse was my teacher, and then we moved to Millersport when dad got transferred to Newark (Ohio) Air Force Base. I started fifth grade there, in Mrs. Whittington's class.

I'm looking forward to reading your first school memories!! Thanks for reading mine! Wishing you a good week ahead! Today is our Board meeting day. We (staff) are always happy to have it behind us!!  Peace & blessings!

  1. I don't have any school memories until 3rd grade. We moved every couple of months so I was in so many schools. When I was in 3rd grade we lived in a actual house not apartment and had the house until my mom sold it in 1990's. I don't remember my teacher's name though.

  2. Reading this makes me realize that we are not too far apart in time.. and we went to school the same way...walking. I feel grateful that in our time the world was much safer and our moms stayed home to nurture us and help us grow into the responsible adults we are now. thanks for sharing Terri

  3. I loved your school memories! I was always tall, too... I, too, loved those stores with the penny candy! Reading your memories brought back some of my own. Oh, the things we could buy with a dime, back then!!! Have a great Monday.

  4. Teri, I was always the tallest one, too and always standing in the back row. Being tall now certainly has its advantages! Your memories were good and I share many of them - walking to school, the penny candies, etc. Although it was safer then, I still remember the group of us who walked together through a huge park with a creek sharing horrible stories about strangers who would take little kids and carry them off. I have no idea where we came up with that stuff.
Great memories of the store and a lovely pic of your Mom.

  5. A great post. I am going to have to start including pictures in my memories. My parents were also married in 1949. My candy store was similar to yours minus the parrot. We also had eggs delivered as well as mild and bread. Our milk wagon was horse-drawn.

    1. If you come back to this, I just need to tell you that I wasn't able to post a comment on your blog this morning. It just sat there waiting. Maybe it will eventually post, but if it doesn't.....I love this new Meme!! Thanks for getting it started!

  7. Yes we walked to school too and home for lunch each day. Buying candy was my favorite thing and would do that at lunch time when I was a little older. You have some awesome memories and I love the pictures!

  8. Hello Terri,
Your memory post brought back memories for me. You and I are from the same era, so to speak. I remember walking to school and then when we moved I had to ride the school bus. I was eager to see what that was like. You have done an excellent job of remembering your teacher's names. I can recall my teacher's names from Grade 2 and up but Kindergarten and 1st grade are lost on me. Mrs. Brady in 2nd grade had really pretty red high heeled shoes that she wore often. I like them a lot. Have a great day -- hope the board meeting goes well!

  9. How so very interesting. I really, REALLY enjoyed reading all of this. Your mother was beautiful...funny how some school districts changed from high school to elementary...I seem to recall that also in my youth...a new high school was built and the old one was converted to elementary.

And penny candy...on the way home. And to have an extra dime at the end of the week to stop by on a Friday after school...what a treat!!!

  11. I remember going to get candy at the service station two blocks from my house. That man had a huge candy counter and we loved going in there! You have some lovely memories and weren't you just the cutest?! I was always the tallest too. You reminded to of some things I left out so I went back and edited my post. Now I need to go and put about being the tallest. LOL

  12. What great memories! You were so cute and your Mom was really pretty. I was always in the bottom row of class pictures, because I was one of the shortest in my class.

  13. The only place i've seen mention of class yearbooks was on classmates.com and I don't like that site. Where exactly did you find your mother's? I've seen that one of my cousins put one of her class photos on facebook and the children's names had been typed in. Wonder if she got that photo off the internet.

  15. Such awesome memories! I loved seeing the pictures! Your childhood sounded so similar to mine. I walked to school and loved to and the corner store for a snack! I just recently heard that my 1st grade teacher passed away at the age of 97! I really loved her..she was one of my favorites. Your mom was so beautiful! I think it's so neat that your mom's high school was your elementary school. :-)

  16. What wonderful school memories you have. I don't have many good memories of school, we moved so much I really didn't like school. I had to smile at you being the tallest in your class, I was always the shortest in my class but for one year there was a girl a wee bit shorter than I was. You and your mom are so pretty. Hugs
