I totally forgot about the new MEME, Memory Monday, which was started two weeks ago by Retired Not Tired. The first week was to share your first memory; this week were are to share a memory of our first home. I'm catching up....
My first memory:
I have to admit that I don't know if it's my FIRST memory, but it is one that I have blogged about before and is the memory that stands out in my mind with the most detail. I was four years old, and our backyard flooded from too much rain. My tricycle was out in the middle of the yard, sitting in about six inches of water. I was on the back porch with my mom, and my grandma. I wanted my bike and was probably crying. Grandma kicked off her shoes and went through the water to get my bike for me. I remember my mom saying "Mother, you'll ruin your stockings!" and grandma said she didn't care. I got my bike. Couldn't ride it anywhere, but I had my bike safe and sound on the back porch! LOL This is the yard, and this is me at that age. The bike was somewhere near the slide and swing set....
My first house:
Well, I have had several "first" houses. The one mentioned above was where we lived from the time I was born, until I was four. When my brother came along, we had to move to a bigger house. This house was new when my folks bought it for $6,000. It has two bedrooms, one bathroom, a kitchen and a living room. The house still stands, across the street from the big cemetery in Washington Court House, Ohio. It is on Washington Avenue, which is (was, anyway) a very busy street. I still have burn scars on my legs from falling on the big floor furnace grate, when I was 12-13 months old. After all these years, when the lighting is just right (and my legs have been freshly shaved), you can see the cross scars running down my legs. I'm happy to not remember that!! It looked very much like this picture. Does anyone else remember these? Ours was between the living room and kitchen, and was probably 4 feet by 3 feet. You had to walk over it to go anywhere in the house, and I wasn't too steady on my feet yet....
My first house (other than an apartment) was with my first husband. We started our married life in a very small apartment, in Columbus, Ohio, while he went to college. When he started working, we decided to move back to our home town, Millersport, where we rented two different houses. When he was transferred to Sandusky, Ohio, we bought our first house in Huron, Ohio, 100 yards from Lake Erie. We could see Cedar Point from the end of our street. We lived there for 4+ years, before moving to Maryland, where we bought our second house. When we divorced, I moved to Fairfax, Virginia, to a wonderful apartment (my first, very own place), where I was extremely happy for the first time in long time.
My first house with Joe was when we got married, in 1985, and bought a house in Alexandria, Virginia. We have now been in our first Florida home for 25+ years. It is the longest either of us has ever lived in the same place. By the time Joe and I got married, I had moved 11 times. Moving to Florida, made #13.
So, now I am caught up with this new MEME. I hope you will consider joining in on Mondays going forward! This coming Monday, the subject is a memory of your first school....
Thanks for stopping by!! Blessings & peace to you!
Adding on!!! I found my first house on Google Maps, and it still looks the same and I'm so happy to see it is being maintained. It looks just like I remember!! AND, the cemetery is across the street!

Hooray for grandmas! That was a cute story!
ReplyDeleteI lived in Fairfax County 1984-1988 and in Orlando in 1995-6 Pleasant times in the life of my family, but Colorado is our home.
Ahhh... what a sweet Grandma.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to first homes, your memory reads like mine. Lots of first homes in my life too. Being an Ohio girl too, I found this very interesting.
I'm glad I found her meme. This is fun, sharing memories like this.
You have a great day.
It is fun to remember by-gone days. Love the picture of you on the slide.
ReplyDeleteThanks Terri...memories are great...Blessings
ReplyDeleteYay Grandma! You were such a cutie!! My memory of those furnaces were that we stood over them so the heat would come up our gowns on a cold morning and also, my mom putting a rack over the furnace to dry diapers and baby clothes. Great memories, Teri.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure my sister Jackie still remembers the horrible burns she got on her legs when she was a toddler. In the summer we kids usually camped outside. My brother was boiling water for tea, and she turned over the pan of boiling water. I still remember her screams too. Like you, i've lived in many houses. Sometimes I dream about one of them that I know no longer exists.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful memory! I loved seeing your first house too.
ReplyDeleteLoved your post, Terri! Your grandma sounded like a sweet grandma! Getting all wet for her granddaughter..so sweet! Ouch to the memory of falling on the furnace grate! Loved seeing your first home. How wonderful that it still looks exactly like you remember!
ReplyDeleteHow cool that you found it on Google Maps! I love technology!
ReplyDeleteWe didn't have those kind of heaters. Sorry about your burn. Looks like a sweet first house and what a great lot with a large yard. You have moved a lot!
ReplyDeleteGosh, Terri. At 3 years old, I too, got burned on a floor furnace grate. I still have the rocking chair in which my dad rocked me at night so I could get some sleep (and the rest of the household). Dad changed that furnace out 1st thing when we moved to the cottage year-around in 1960.
