I am late getting to the computer tonight. Had a busy day at work, with no time to pop on Facebook or Blogger. Meeting after meeting followed by getting payroll done and working the doctor appointments in.... just one of those days.
The orthopedic doc had me get xrays before the appointment. She told me that my knee has no cartilage left and is now bone-on-bone. I need another shot of synvisc. http://synviscone.com/ I've had two, and this last one has lasted nearly nine months. Six months is the usual. Anyway, my insurance company now requires authorization before I can get another shot, so I am waiting on that. They will get me in ASAP when they get the okay. Sigh. She offered me a cortisone shot to get me through, but too much cortisone isn't good - not to mention I really don't want two needles in my knee. One will be quite enough.
Then she told me that I do indeed have a heel spur - a huge heel spur. It is so bad that she didn't want to risk making it worse - not her specialty - so I see the podiatrist tomorrow morning. Not sure what he will do, but I have to get some relief. They did give me some gel inserts for my shoes, which will hopefully take some of the pressure off. Fingers crossed. I'll let you know what I find out tomorrow.
As for an eventual knee replacement - she told me to keep getting the synvisc as long as it does the job for me. She said knee replacements are barbaric and horribly painful - the hardest surgery they do....her words. She advised me to put it off for five or six more years if I can. It takes 6-8 weeks to recover. I like her advice. She said when it gets so bad that I can't get out of bed in the morning - then get the surgery. Kind of surprised me, because I know they have made some good progress with orthopedic surgeries, but I guess this one is still tough.
So, that's my news for today. I did make some yummy soup with the rest of the turkey. I have enough for lunch tomorrow, too! YUM.
I have some company on the sofa tonight. Joe is in his man-cave, watching Eagles football, while I watch Dancing With The Stars. This is Onyx and Lilly....
Wishing you a good Tuesday! Peace, love & hugs.

Hi Terri,
ReplyDeleteI have had knee problems for about 4 years now. Recently changed doctors and my new doctor has already taken x-rays and made an appointment with a specialist. I make it through my days taking Celebrex. I am hoping for some relief as I am waiting to have the surgery someday. I once had a terrible heel spur. My doctor at the time told me I would require surgery and it might cripple me. Scared me to death. I went to a foot doctor who gave me cortisone shot and new inserts for my shoes. It worked wonders and I have no problems now. So I will hope for that for you.
I can't take any of the arthritis medicine, because I am on a blood thinner. I can't take any anti-inflamatory drugs because of that. Not even ibuprofen for a headache. Glad you have a new doctor you like!!
DeleteI like that your dcctor is upfront and honest. I also hope and pray that the insurance company comes through pronto and that you don't have to continue suffering for long.
ReplyDeleteWonder who the cats rooted for to win or were they just catnapping?
The cats were cat-napping, and they only want "mom" to be happy! I don't really care who wins this time. They are all really great dancers.
DeleteHope your ins gives the ok right away for your shot. I've never had a heel spur so I will learn something new and google it :) Hope you feel better soon
ReplyDeleteWe have discussed the knee surgery and the heel problem, but I have to re-state, I had both knees replaced at the same time, and would do it again in a heart beat. I stayed in hospital 2 days, went to rehab hospital for 1 week for physical therapy and then had home health PT for 5 weeks. My doctor was fantastic...told me in detail what he would do, how it would go, and it did. I know everyone cant have 100% success like I did, but when your time comes, I pray it will be. As for the heel spur.....ouch! Let me know what you find out today.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope you can get some pain relief with your knee and heel spur. I will add this prayer request to my daily prayers.
ReplyDeleteI hate all these signs of old age...sigh. I am coming up for 70. I wonder about the blanket under the bigger black cat. It looks like one I got from Intercourse, Pennsylvania. It breaks folk up here into laughter.
