When Love Goes Wrong, Nothing Goes Right
Saturday 9: When Love Goes Wrong (Nothing Goes Right) 1953
Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.
1) This is from the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Have you seen it? I think I saw it once a very long time ago.
2) The lyrics tell us that, when love goes wrong, "a match won't light." When did you most recently light a match? We have lighters so it has been years since I struck a match.
3) The duet is performed at a French sidewalk cafe, where Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe are (literally) sharing a cup of coffee. With whom did you most recently have coffee? With Joe at breakfast!
4) The tune was written by prolific composer Hoagy Carmichael. He was influenced by his mother, who earned extra money for the family playing piano during silent movies. Who in your life influenced your career choices? No person really influenced me. I just went where God pointed me and that's the best way I can describe it.
5) Jane and Marilyn shared something beyond movie stardom. They were both married to Hall of Famers. Marilyn Monroe was married to Joe DiMaggio, who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955. Jane was married to quarterback Bob Waterfield, inducted into the football Hall of Fame in 1965. Which sport would you rather watch: baseball or football? Football, for sure. I find baseball a bit boring actually.
6) Jane and Bob Waterfield were high school sweethearts at Van Nuys High. The Southern California school was used as a set for the 1982 movie, Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Tell us something about your high school. Millersport High School (or Walnut Township) was not just a high school. We were Kindergarten through 12th grade, buildings separated by the auditorium/gymnasium. We all shared the cafeteria. There were 47 in my senior class if that gives you an idea about my tiny home town. This picture is from my senior yearbook.

7) Marilyn and Joe DiMaggio met on a blind date at a Hollywood restaurant called Villa Nova. Have you ever arranged a blind date? If so, did the couple hit it off and end up dating? I fixed my brother up with a friend, Lois, once (back in the 70s). They didn't hit it off at all. Lois and I are still friends. It didn't hurt the friendship or my relationship with my brother. They both went on to meet their soul mates!!
8) In 1953, when Gentlemen Prefer Blondes was released, a tornado did severe damage to Waco, TX. Tell us about a major weather event that you endured (tornado, hurricane, flood, blizzard, heatwave, etc.). I live in central Florida so hurricane season happens every year. Irma was the last big one that went through here. We have so far been blessed with very little or no damage and just power outages (for which we now have a generator). Praise God.
9) Random question: You see a filthy puddle. Floating on top are cigarette butts, a leaf, and a $1 bill. Would you bend over and rescue the dollar? Of course, I would pick up the money! Gingerly, but I would pick it up. I pick up pennies, too!
I'm doing laundry today. The new house cleaner came yesterday so the house is shining!! Yay!! We will see her again in the first week of July. I'll do my best to keep up with things in-between!
Thanks for your visit and happy weekend!!
Peace & hugs!! God bless!!

What a unique school experience you had, Terri, growing up in such a small town. I think our graduating class had close to 300 seniors. Glad the house cleaning woman is working out for you, too. That's got to be a joy!
ReplyDeleteBlessings!
I'm glad the cleaning lady worked out for you. I'd pick up the $1 too.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
I wish I had grown up in a smaller town with the # of seniors you had in your class. There were 397 in mine and I didnt even know all of them. So glad your cleaner came and you were pleased. Happy Saturday.
ReplyDeleteYour school sounds about like the one in Cambridge Springs that my mom went to. I think she had 50+ in her graduating class. They are all still friends and keep up with each other. Way different from my experience with 365 in my class. I can't even imagine the classes that have double or triple that in each class. Crazy! I seem to be the only one who would leave the dollar in the puddle. LOL Have a blessed and happy Saturday. I am off to shop with Megan.
ReplyDeletesix of us in my grade.. two grades to one classroom. It was wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI think I have mentioned this before, our graduating class in 1985 in Ocala, had close to 1,000-3,000 graduating...my dad said nothing has changed either. Back then there were like only 4 schools, now, there are like a dozen due to the size of Ocala.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your post, Terri, always do. smiles
So glad your housekeeper is a good one Terri. I have never seen that movie, though I have heard of it. I have never been a Marilyn Monroe fan though I know someone who was named Marilyn for Ms Monroe.:)
ReplyDeleteLOVE your response to #4, Terri! I've never been able to abide baseball; still wonder how it came to be "America's Game." The last time I recall using a match was at my workplace's ladies room -- which had no air purifiers. (TMI?) All the girls kept a matchbook in their desk drawer, just in case.
ReplyDeleteI think baseball, back in the day, was accessible to many and they had "The Babe" to keep things interesting. ???
DeleteOh my goodness, you think baseball is boring? My husband and I love baseball so much that once when we were on vacation in Florida...we stayed two weeks and we could not see our beloved Cardinals. We drove over to Tampa Bay and watched a game there. I loved the stadium and had a great time. The Cardinals typically have a really good team that is not generally boring. I understand though. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend!

My Joe LOVES baseball and was a really good baseball player in high school. His team is the Phillies and I do go to a Spring training game most years and watch it (kinda) on TV with him. My BFF's husband is a huge Cardinals fan who lives in Illinois. We took them to a spring training game when they visited last. The Tigers train here in Lakeland so we can usually see them play the Phills (and the Cards).
DeleteTerri, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is an adorable movie! I do love those old classics! I would pick up the dollar too! xo
ReplyDeleteI would pick up the dollar too!
ReplyDeleteI like your town photo. I like little towns and I think they are a great place to grow up in.
Oh my goodness - kindergarten to 12 - that was unique.
ReplyDeleteRegarding #6: I went to Van Nuys High School in Van Nuys, California for my sophomore year, long before it became famous for this movie.
ReplyDeleteMy family moved a lot; I went to a different school nearly every year from Kindergarten through High School graduation. Our time in Van Nuys was just one of many places where we lived.
