NATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE DAY – August 7
NATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE DAY
Observed annually on August 7, National Lighthouse Day honors the beacon of light that for hundreds of years symbolized safety and security for ships and boats at sea. At one time, the beacon of light could be found across almost all of America’s shorelines.
A lighthouse is described as a tower, building or any other type of structure that is designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses and used as an aid to navigation for maritime pilots at sea or on inland waterways.
Lighthouse Facts
- Mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals, reefs, safe entries to harbors
- Assist in aerial navigation
- The number of lighthouses has declined due to the expense of maintenance. Modern electric navigational systems are replacing them.
- Their light source is called a lamp (either electric or oil-fueled).
- Originally lit by an open fire and then candles.
- Differ depending on the location and purpose but have standard components
- The lantern room is a glassed-in housing at the top of a lighthouse tower
- Beneath the lantern room is the Watch Room or Service Room
- Next to the Watch room is an open gallery.
- Development accelerated in the 17th century with Britain’s Trinity House constructing its first in 1609.
- In North America, St. Augustine, Florida built the first lighthouse. Printed on a 1791 map, it had been built by Menendez after his landing in 1586.
- Boston Light built on little Brewster Island next in 1716.
- The oldest existing lighthouse in the United States is the Sandy Hook Lighthouse in New Jersey. Built in the year 1764, this lighthouse is still in operation.
- At the end of the 19th century, the United States had the most lighthouses of any nation.
- The 9th Act of the first Congress created the US Bureau of Lighthouses in 1789, which placed lighthouses under federal control.
- The United States Coast Guard took over on July 7, 1939.
- Hobbyists enjoy visiting and photographing lighthouses. They also collect ceramic

1. Let's start with a number! How many lighthouses have you visited? Gosh, maybe three or four. It is not really my thing.
2. Have you been inside a lighthouse and did you walk to the top? No, I've not been inside one and I couldn't walk to the top if I wanted to (maybe this time next year!!). We did visit the lighthouse in St. Augustine with grandson Tristan back in August 2010. He did climb to the top.
3. Do you seek them out when you are traveling the coastlines or are you not that big a fan? They are always interesting and some are pretty but we don't seek them out.
4. Do you have a favorite scripture or another reference to share with us concerning a guiding light in your life? Psalm 27:1 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
5. If you don't collect lighthouses when you travel, is there something tangible that you tend to collect as a souvenir when you are on vacation or a road trip? I mentioned this in a previous blog. I used to collect Cat's Meows but I don't have any more room for them so quit buying them years ago. Here is a link for Cat's Meow, if you are interested.
6. Please share something with us about your week. I have nothing exciting going on this week to report about. Joe got the oil changed in the car yesterday. He has an echocardiogram today, to check on his heart valve. Tomorrow I have blood work for my endocrinologist. See... nothing exciting. Hoping for good news with Joe's heart. I am still working on my closet project, a little at a time. Ho-hum.
Thanks for your visit! If you joined in today, please link-up below so the other Meddlers can visit you!
Peace & hugs!! God bless!!
That lighthouse has an interesting variation on the traditional stripes.
ReplyDeleteI hope the news from your doctors is all good.
I have two Cat's Meow pieces. One is a church I visited as part of an outreach team and they gave them to us and the other is...a lighthouse! My mom brought it from somewhere when I was decorating with a coastal theme. I'm not really into collecting them, but my aunt was and had hundreds of them. She had a couple of local series that I would have liked to have had, but her sons just wrapped everything up and sold it on ebay. Not a sentimental bone in their bodies.
ReplyDeleteHow could Psalm 27 not have popped into my head. It is one of my favorite passages of Scripture and I sing it regularly! I hope it's all good news from the doctor. Nothing exciting you say?? Thanks for the Medley, Terri. xo
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of the Cat's Meow, but those are really cool! Praying for good news!! Have a great Wednesday!
ReplyDeleteWe love lighthouses. We don't collect them but if there is a lighthouse nearby we will go see it. I only climbed one once. It's too much for my heart.
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
I think we discussed this once-I have Cat Meows and collect them---well, my mother sent me all hers. I'll try to get my answers up soon, smiles
ReplyDeleteHad to check out the Cat Meows - nice keepsakes of visits etc. Hope the test results are all ok. Yes lighthouses are not good for those of us with dodgy knees lol
ReplyDeleteI have claustrophobia and a fear of heights so no...no lighthouses for me. Some family members have braved the Tybee Light House on Tybee Island. I wave from below.
ReplyDeleteAlways prayers for Joe's heart & your knees :)
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a lighthouse in person - I would love to - I'm so not a beach person hence, why I never see one :)
Cat's Meow - never heard of it - checking it out right now :)
Prayers for Joe's echo! Oh, how little Tristan looks there. Isn't time a thief? Enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteThe only lighthouse I've actually been inside of is the one at St. Simon's - beautiful!
ReplyDeleteKeeping Joe and you in my prayers, Terri!
Blessings!
I pray that you and your husband are OK and you get good news health wise.
ReplyDeleteGod bless you all.
Praying hubby gets good news after his testing!!! St.Augustine has a lovely lighthouse! I see it every time I come up along the coast as I leave Floria.
ReplyDeleteHappy Wednesday- xo Diana
Trusting your husband's echo brings good results. Did you realize your blog site in "Not secure?" I posted something about that on my previous blog. https://beautywithoutwithin.blogspot.com/2019/08/ins-outs-and-focuses.html

praying the test goes well with great outcome!
ReplyDeleteI love the St Augustine lighthouse! We have 18 in NJ and I live by one of them so I see it all the time.
We enjoy lighthouses although they are getting increasingly hard for us to climb. I enjoy seeing them from the outside, at ground level. Been inside the one at Ponce Inlet and St. Augustine (both in Florida for the non-Floridians reading this). I think we climbed one in Delaware in the mid-80's (maybe).
ReplyDeleteJust wasn't up to posting this week...a stomach bug has about done me in this week. I do really like lighthouses and would love to climb to the top of one someday. I have seen several along the NC coastline but never had the chance to go inside...they had just moved the one at Cape Hatteras when we visited but it was still not open to the public at that time. It still mesmerizes me that they actually moved that thing! Hope all goes well with the test results!
ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful lighthouse! Thank-you for sharing it. This was a fun one for me, it brought back such great memories. Loved your answers! Have a nice Wednesday!

Oh, the closets! I did that recently myself and need to begin with the kitchen cabinets. Thank you for the fun questions. I like your lighthouse photos, but that staircase! Whew! I hope and pray with you for Joe's heart.
ReplyDeleteWe love lighthouses and have visited a lot of them. Most have been in Michigan where there are a plethora of them! I've also climbed to the top of many, but my knees don't want me to do that anymore. :)
ReplyDeleteI love this subject, so many wonderful photos of lighthouses. Makes me want to visit the ones I have not seen yet. Thanks for coordinating this fun topic. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteCheers!
Lori in Blue Ridge, GA
I have been to one lighthouse and I did not climb it.
ReplyDeleteI see your life is exciting as mine!
Hope Joe;s tests come out great.
