Kentucky Rain
Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our
readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post
will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated.
Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you
to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have
any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here
is today's meme!
Next Thursday, the 8th would be Elvis' 80th birthday,
so we're celebrating The King. Here is this week's song. 1. In this song, Elvis hitchhikes across Kentucky. Have you ever hitched a ride?
Not with a stranger!

2. Elvis received his first guitar for his 11th birthday,
even though he'd asked his parents for a bicycle. As an adult, how often do you
ride a bike?
Never. I haven't had a bike since I was 15 years old.
3. When Elvis was a child, his family was very poor, often living in rooming houses or public housing. His classmates teased him for being "trashy," which left him shy. Were you more shy or outgoing as a kid?
I think I was more shy, though not with my best friends.
4. While in high school, Elvis mowed neighbors' lawns with a push mower and a sickle. According to The Home Depot, one of today's most popular mowers is a gas-powered Cub Cadet with a self-mulching feature. Tell us about your lawn mower.
We haven't had a lawn mower in 24 years. We have a lawn service. I have not idea what ours was, back then. Probably the cheapest one we could get at Home Depot. My dad had a big riding mower, but that was a very long time ago.
5. In the 1950s, Frank Sinatra dismissed Elvis as, "deplorable." Yet by the time of Elvis' death, he had revised his opinion and said, "Elvis was the embodiment of the whole American culture." Tell us about something or someone you changed your mind about.

Lady Gaga. She really does have a good voice, and I love her new partnership with Tony Bennett.
6. After Elvis was discharged from the Army, his first performance was on a Sinatra TV special, sponsored by Timex. Do you wear a watch?

I wear a watch every day, and have eight or nine in my jewelry box. I don't have expensive watches, but rather enjoy watches that are fun.
7. Coinciding with Elvis' 80th birthday, there will be an auction of Presley-related memorabilia at his home in Graceland. One item up for bid is a plush toy he gave to an Army buddy's wife in 1958 for the baby she was expecting. Do you know anyone who is looking forward to a baby in 2015?

There are several blogging friends who are expecting babies or grandbabies in 2015. I am not aware of any babies coming in our family, right now, and no one at work is expecting (so far).
8. None of the items being sold at the Graceland auction actually belonged to Elvis at the time of his death. Everything left to daughter Lisa Marie remains in her possession. Do you have something you cherish that was given to you by a close relative?

I have several dishes that were my grandmothers' (both sides), but my most treasured thing is my mom's cedar chest, which was a graduation gift from her parents (my grandparents). I want to have it refinished someday, and will pass it along in the family.
9. The US Postal service sold more than 500 million of the Elvis commemorative stamp. According to the Census Bureau, that was two stamps each for every man, woman and child in the United States. When is the last time you visited the post office?
I usually don't go, but Joe goes for us, since he is semi-retired and is out and about during the day. He went a few weeks ago, for stamps for the Christmas cards, and he also went to mail gifts, two weeks before Christmas.
I have never been an Elvis fan, though enjoy a few of his movies and songs. "Kentucky Rain" is one of the good ones. Hard to believe he would be 80!! Makes me feel old!! LOL
Thanks for stopping by! Happy weekend! Peace, love & hugs.

We used to live in Memphis, so I've been to Graceland several times - strange place, but interesting :-)
ReplyDeleteI can't believe he would have been 80 either. Makes me feel old too!
ReplyDeleteInteresting meme today. I've often wondered what will happen to Graceland as the population that loved Elvis dies off. That huge memorial will lose interest, I'm sure. No answers, just questions.
ReplyDeleteAgain I agree with a lot of your answers. I love Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett's voices together. I'm sure just about everyone, who has a lawn mower now in the US, has a riding one. I have a photo of my mother with a gas-powered push mower from the 70's. Even though it was gas-powered, it was still hard work.
ReplyDeleteHave you been to Graceland? I've never really been keen on going there. Hope you're having a good Saturday.
I was not an Elvis fan either. I couldnt stand to look at him. He did have a good voice on some songs. I have many, many watches but need batteries for most. I have a watch fetish I guess! lol
ReplyDeleteInteresting answers, Terri!
ReplyDeleteI loved Elvis as a small child and enjoyed his movies. My older sister thought he was a "greaser". Remember that term? LOL I kind of thought that later, but I love the stories of his random acts of kindness and generosity to others. And I hate that he died the way he did. I don't think I have hitchhiked that I can recall (trying to remember about car trouble), but I have picked up hitchhikers ONCE. Too long to relate here, but remind me to tell you 'cause I think you will get a kick out of it. I bought a bike as an adult and quit riding, but I had to ride a stationary bike for my knee when I injured it. In terms of shyness, what you said rang true with me, Terri, but I was very, very shy in first grade. Mainly, I was scared of my teacher, but we had a substitute I loved who filled in for much of the remainder of the school year. In second, I came out of my shell and loved everyone (particularly my teacher) and starting talking more. Sometimes I am still shy, but I am very private even though my life has made me be a public person at times. We have one of those push mowers like my grandmother had which needs to be sharpened. As to the next question, I have always found that my gut reactions about people are pretty well spot-on, but I override any negative first impressions in order to give others the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes I have been pleasantly surprised, and other times, I have been sorry that I overrode my reactions. One case in particular which I will tell you about some time. It's funny, though, that every time I tell Mr. Magpie a business is going to go under due to a clerk or owner's behavior, they generally do. He was remarking on that the other day. I am a big believer in "the customer is always right." I am not wearing a watch because my favorite one is broken and the other lost, but I am time oriented. We just had four family babies in 2014 (two little boy cousins, one little girl great great niece, and one little girl cousin named for my MIL), but I know some folks who are having babies in 2015, just not relatives...so far. I have my MIL's engagement ring and Mr. Magpie's paternal grandmother's as well, a necklace that belonged to Adelaide, and a ring that my mother had made for me out of my father's ring.I have other sentimental pieces, too, like my grandmother's china cabinet and sideboard that survived the 1927 Mississippi River Flood, and I am giving them to my great niece. I am going to do something with the two engagement rings, but I haven't decided what yet. I am saving them both in case Mr. Magpie's nephew has daughters, and I will give them to them eventually. Or I might give one of the rings to the baby who was named for his mother. I think that is such a sweet gesture on his little cousin's part, particularly since she is related on his dad's side of the family. I just went to the post office yesterday! I actually love the one on the island. It's fun to go there. The lady is a stitch who is generally there. Just jolly and fun!
xo
Sheila :-)
Eeek! Sorry that was sooooo LONG. xo
ReplyDeleteI am not a Elvis fan either...but...80, wow...smiles--great post. Blessings
