Hodgepodge is Back!

Joyce is back with her weekly Hodgepodge! Thank you, Joyce! Missed you last week, but I know it was much deserved time off from here!  Join the fun by clicking HERE!

Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 187

From Joyce:  Welcome back to the Hodgepodge! I can't say I'm caught up, but I'm not any further behind either, so that's something, right? It's nice to be back, and I always appreciate a week with a ready made theme. See you back here tomorrow to share the love!

1. As August draws to a close, share what's been your favorite weekend of the entire summer?  Definitely when our granddaughter came to visit us in June! We hadn't seen her since Christmas, and didn't get to spend much time, just with her. She lives in south Florida now, and we will see her this coming weekend!

2. Labor Day is marked in the US of A on Monday, September 1st.  What paying job have you held that you've loved the most? Liked the least?  I love the job I have right now, and have been there going on 18 years! I am the accountant and human resources at Polk Museum of Art. I also supervise the building operations, security, and visitor services (including the retail store). Love, love, love my job and the amazingly creative people I work with.  The one I liked the least....well, I've never really hated any job I've had because I have learned from each one, but I guess at the bottom of the list would be cleaning rooms at a motel, two summers during high school.

3. Does the new school year start before or after Labor Day where you live? When do you think it should begin? There is much discussion now about older students having later start times to their school day...your thoughts?  School started here in Lakeland on August 18th, but they get out at the end of May.  When I was in school (no, I didn't walk 5 miles in the snow)...school started at 8:40 and got out at 3:10 (I think I remember that correctly). Band and sports practiced after school, until 5:00 and we all got home for dinner with the family. Those were good hours. We didn't start until after Labor Day, and we got out the first week of June. Seniors graduated in late May. It worked. Having kids be at bus stops by 6:00 a.m. is ridiculous.  BUT - back when I was in school, most moms didn't work outside the home, so start and stop times weren't such an issue as they are today, when mom and dad both have to get to work. It's a different world today.

4. What's something you've worked at recently that could be deemed a 'labor of love'?  Giggle - whenever I cook dinner, it is a labor of love. I have come to hate cooking for two. It's just easier to go out, but I know Joe enjoys a home-cooked meal, so we split it fairly evenly.

5.Which of the following work idioms can you most relate to right now...'A woman's work is never done.', 'All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.' 'Many hands make light work.A woman's work is never done, for sure. There are kitchen cupboards to clean out, a pile of boxes with photos that still need to be digitized, and that is just inside. Motivation is the key, and that is what is lacking right now. Ha!

6. Crab or lobster or thanks, but no thanks? Favorite way to have your choice prepared?  Oh my goodness, crab, please!! I like lobster, but given the choice will take King Crab legs over lobster any day. Steam 'em, and let me crack them and dip them in melted butter. Yum. Whole crabs are okay and fun now and then, but they are too much work for too little reward. Give me those big legs, steaming hot and I am in heaven! Throw in some shrimp and call it double heaven.

7. Albert Einstein is quoted as saying, 'Three rules of work: Out of clutter find simplicity; From discord find harmony; In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.' Which of the three do you consider to be the most important? Share one of your own 'rules of work'.  In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity would be my choice, because I choose to be positive and figure it out. Finding harmony in discord would be the most difficult for me...but there lies opportunity. I think these all fit together, actually.  My rule....Git 'er done...no one else is going to do it for me (but where is that motivation?).

8.  Insert your own random thought here. Coffee.  I love my Keurig coffee maker at home, and am so glad to have one at work, in our little coffee/snack area (right outside my office, no less).  Coffee keeps me going. I used to be so addicted that I would get a caffeine headache if I didn't have at least one cup before 10:00 a.m.  I 'got off' coffee for awhile, and the caffeine headaches don't happen anymore, but I still drink 3-4 cups a day. Do any of you drink more than that, or am I a crazy lady?

Thanks for stopping by my Hodgepodge! I'm looking forward to reading yours! Please leave a comment for me! Have a great Wednesday/Hump Day! Peace & blessings!

  1. We recently got a Keurig and while I was the one resisting I am actually loving it. I think I probably drink less coffee instead of more since I make it one cup at a time. With a pot sitting there I'd kinda sip til it was gone. Your job sounds interesting. Enjoy your day!

  2. I don't drink coffee. I do drink tea. I drink about 4 glasses of iced tea a day. Have a great day!

  3. I guess I've never met anyone before who gets to work in an art museum. That sounds like a dream-come-true! Regarding coffee, I took myself off it 2 years ago and don't miss it (any more, that is). But I do love getting kissed by my hubby right after he's finished off a cup of (Keurig-made) Millstone Hazelnut Blend. (smile) You have a nice blog. Have a good Labor Day weekend!

  4. ...that's your GRANDdaughter? My goodness...you age well Terri. Seriously. A granddaughter...I'm in denial here...you don't look old enough yourself to have one this age.

    1. Anni, I will be 63 in December. Lauren is my step-son's adopted daughter. She was 4 when she came into our lives. My Joe is 14 years older than me, so "my" two boys are really too old to be my biological off-spring. Joey is 51, and Lauren is 24. Our son, Jeff, is 47. Joe's first wife, and mother of the boys, died of cancer. Joe and I have been married almost 30 years. Thanks for the compliment, however!

  5. I don't do memes.. Have enough of my own things to write!!! ha.... BUT--here are only two memes I would want to participate in. One is Hodgepodge Wednesday --mainly because someone comes up with some great questions.... I'll attempt to answer a few of them today.
    1. My favorite weekend/week in Summer was our Anniversary Trip to West Virginia... It wasn't long --but was perfect in every respect.... The best part for me was riding the steam engine up the mountain at Cass, West VA...

    2. My favorite paying job was when I lived in Texas for 12 years between 1988-2000. I worked in 5 different churches for about 25 years --after teaching school for about 10 years.... The church in Texas was a TREMENDOUS place to be. I loved everything about it except TEXAS... Being a VA/TN gal, I missed the mountains and seasons WAY too much --so that's why I came back here. My worst job was 1 of the 5 churches..... Just wasn't a good fit for me!

    3. Our schools down here in the south usually always started BEFORE Labor Day... These days, some of them started at the beginning of August....

    4. Since I love my Backyard Birds ---my "labor of love" is taking care of them and feeding them well each and every day....

    5. Right now in my life, I can say that I PLAY as much as I can --and work only when I have to.... But--when I was younger and employed fulltime, I seldom PLAYED and WORKED hard!!!! I was always called a Workaholic....NO MORE!

    6. Neither one --although I do like them both.. My seafood of choice are the huge scallops, fried of course... YUM...

So you are in Lakeland? That is a pretty area of FL I think... Being a Methodist most of my life, I am very aware of Fl. Southern... Gorgeous school!

Beautiful photo of your granddaughter... I have 5 grands --2 in college now... Yipes!

I don't like to cook much either (especially for two)....

    AND--I love my coffee also....
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  6. First and foremost for me, is my Keurig. I drink 2 cups every morning and sometimes in the afternoon, we have a flavored cup of some kind. I do get a headache about noon if I dont drink in the morning. I also would prefer eating out rather than grocery shopping and cooking, but Jim honestly does most of the cooking here, and I clean up. We dont eat out much at all any more. Lauren is a beautiful young lady and I know you are happy to have her closer. Good questions today, some hard to answer.

    1. My Joe can barely boil water, so I am envious of anyone who has a man who cooks!! It has been so long since I went without coffee, I really don't know if I would get a headache now, or not!

  7. Great meme today, Terri. Best weekend this summer? Well, it would definitely be a couple of weekends ago when we spent 4 days with our lovely Julie and her sweet little baby Wrenn, 6 months old. Love that little grandbaby to pieces.

  8. Your grand-daughter is so pretty. I had the same school schedule as you. It worked out good for my family too. On question #4, I didn't think to answer the same way. I don't like cooking anymore, but Hubby always seems to want a warm home-cooked meal.
    You have a great day.

  9. The 18th of August seems so early. We get out at the end of May here, too (unless there are snow days to make up) but school didn't start here until this week.

By the way, your granddaughter is a beautiful young lady. :)

    1. Thank you. I agree with you that Lauren is beautiful. She carries none of my genes, so I guess I can say that....

  10. I am a firm believe in school starting after Labor Day. I like your honesty about your labor of love! We have a Keurig which I think is a great invention. I am not much of a coffee drinker but I will sometimes reuse a cup after my husband has his coffee on the weekend. It certainly doesn't need to be strong for me.

  11. Howdy, stranger! :-)

Did you think I had dropped off the earth?

Loved reading your answers, and I have to confess that I thought you said your "grandmother" in the first one and read it several times to see if you were talking about the past. LOL I was thinking, her grandmother must be over 100, and she is still able to get around from South Florida! LOL Me thinks I might need new glasses. ;-)

I fell AGAIN and am recuperating. Fell inside this time. But all is well.

I hope to be down your way and hope to see you in September.

I blogged today, but my post is not loading for some reason. Likely some new glitch from Blogger. Argh. Every time I come back, they do something to bug me. But this, too, shall pass.

    XO,

    Sheila

  12. My Keurig coffee pot is one I love - we are on our 2nd - they only last here about 2 to 2 1/2 years - and we clean it - not sure what we are doing and the one now is dying - so we we have to get number 3! I love coffee too!

  13. I always enjoy your answers. You are such a positive person. Your granddaughter is lovely and I remember what a good time you enjoyed with her. I love my Keurig, too.

  14. Cooking has become a 'labor of love' for me, too--more labor than love though :)

It's great that you love your job! It makes getting up and going a lot easier.

I had to give up caffeine two years ago. I never drank coffee, but I sure do miss iced tea.

  15. My sister showed me this little vacuum cleaner she has. Today while she was at work, i asked both her son and husband a question about it; neither of them knew the answer, so I had to figure it out out myself. You're right about a woman's work. Like you, I haven't had any horrible jobs - sometimes boring, but not unpleasant jobs.

  16. That was fun! If only it fit the theme of one of my blogs ...
