I am following a blog by Karen of Sew Many Ways, and her blog this morning is about school lunches. It brought back memories of those days.
Some of you know that I am from a very, very, very small town in Central Ohio. Many of the residents lived in the country and were farmers. Pigs and corn. I lived "in town" just a block from the school. My school was kindergarten through 12th grade, all in two buildings joined by the auditorium/gymnasium. The cafeteria was in the elementary part of the school, but high school had lunch there too. Because it was so small, we knew the 'cafeteria ladies' like we knew our teachers. I was fortunate to be able to have the school lunch every day. My parents both worked full time, so packing lunches just wasn't on the agenda. (I'm the oldest of four kids.)
What was your favorite school lunch? Did you eat a 'hot lunch' or did you pack yours? My favorite was baked chili. I remember it being so delicious! It was like the typical chili soup, but was thick enough to eat with a fork. I think today Rachel Ray calls it 'stoup'. Another memory is from peanut butter sandwich day. There would be bowls of dill pickles on the tables. Wide open bowls of pickles for the kids to eat, if you liked dill pickles. I still put dill pickles on my peanut butter sandwiches...don't wrinkle your nose until you try it!! It's GOOD!! LOL
Anyway, I thought I would piggy-back on Karen's blog, and find out what you all had for lunches when you were in school.
Here is an aerial view of my home town. My grandma lived across the street from us, and my BFF Elaine lived next to Grandma. If you click on the photo to enlarge it, it will make more sense. I posted this on Multiply awhile back, so some of you have seen it already. You can see the school I went to, referenced above. The Jr. High/High School is to the left and the elementary is to the right, with the auditorium between. I had 47 in my senior class. Small.
Wishing you a good FRIDAY EVE today!! Peace, love & hugs.

Wo w! Your graduating class was small! My favourite lunch was from the school where I attended second grade. Once a week we would have chili, which was yummy good I remember, with pimiento cheese sandwiches and for dessert an orange. However, my high school had no memorable meals. You could find just about anything in it, I remember one of the teachers found a piece of metal. I usually took my lunch because the food was that bad.
ReplyDeleteI used to pack my own school lunch but I would buy on certain days that they had stuff I liked or if we were out of bread. A fave of mine all through school was the Peanut Butter Cookies. They were thick, slightly crunchy and chewy at the same time.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in grade school my fave packed lunch was FlufferNutter sandwiches (marshmallow fluff and peanut butter). Now it doesn't sound good at all lol
Oh and a thermos of Limeade.
Love the picture of your hometown. Another thing we have in common....this is getting spooky...lol My grandmother was from Ohio, and we lived with her from the time I was 3 until I graduated from high school. I thought I was the only person in the whole world that ate chili with a fork!!! I tell my children that, and they cant imagine...lol Enjoy your Friday Eve!
ReplyDeleteAwesome post! My school didn't have hot lunches until Junior High so in elementary you either went home for lunch or you brought your bagged lunched. If I went home my favorite lunch was Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich with a bowl of chicken noodle soup and a glass of milk. I still eat this for lunch as an adult..LOL. If my mom packed me a lunch, my favorite was P&J sandwich, Fritos, and an orange. When was the last time you visited your home town?
ReplyDeleteKris, I get back there around once every two years, unless there is a wedding or funeral in between. We try to see my Ohio family one year, and Joe's D'Orsaneo family (in PA, MD, & VA) the other year. It will be Ohio in the Spring, for my niece's graduation.
DeleteI really can't remember the school meals. My Dad would give us lunch money and I would sometimes buy a milk and keep the rest for shopping on Saturday when we went to town. I lived on a farm in Ohio and money was always in short supply for my family.
ReplyDeleteI didn't care for school lunches much. I'm not a sandwich fan. My Mom used to slather the margarine on and I hated that. I finally told her to skip the margarine all together! lol!
ReplyDeleteMy high school was large, busing kids in from about a 20 mile radius. We were small towns with lots of farm country. In grade school I think my favorite was the little pizzas they made on hamburger buns. Zesty sauce. We didn't get pizza at home. There was a blog on blogster this week about 1st grade memories. That was a 2 room school for me.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite school lunch was a "hoagie" Basically a sub roll with assorted meats, lettuce and cheese. Tasted so much better eating it at school than at home. lol

I used to walk home for lunch in grade school so that was nice. In middle school and high school I had school lunches. Sub type sandwiches or the spaghetti were about the best. Tuna surprise ewwwwwwww
ReplyDeleteYour home town is similar to mine, minus the lake, and where I still live. Small. In grade school I walked home for lunch. We had a whole hour but my school was only a few blocks from home. Then when I went to high school, it was "up-town" so a bunch of us girls went up to Main Street and ate lunch at the drug store soda fountain. I usually had the french fries and vanilla coke. :) I remember a girl friend of mine always ordered a bowl of hot water and put ketchup in it. Then we shared the fries. Those were fun times.
