Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 307
1. Share a favorite memory of your mother or share a favorite something from your own life as a mother. If you're a mother (or stepmom) tell us how your experience as a mom differs from your own mother's experience.
Oh my, I have so many wonderful memories of my mom. She was only 65 when we lost her to cancer (in 1995). My mom sang. She sang in the choir at church, she sang in the car (Hole in the bottom of the sea....among others!), and she sang along with the radio when working in the kitchen. One of my earliest memories of her is of her singing along with "Blueberry Hill" while working in the kitchen. I was probably four or five.
I'm a step-mom of two men who were 18 and 22 when Joe and I married. My experience, therefore, is much different from my mom's. Joey and Jeff's mom died of cancer when they were 16 and 20. She told them that she wanted their dad to get married again and for them to trust his judgment. Bless her for making my entry into the family so easy. I love those two guys as if they were of my own blood.
2. In May we celebrate teachers (May 9) and nurses (May 6) both. Most every family has at least one in their midst, so tell us something (or a few things) you appreciate about the teacher or nurse on your family tree.

Both of my sisters and my sister-in-law are teachers. I could write volumes about them and can only say my hat goes off to all teachers. It is a hard job that not everyone is cut out for and those who stick with it are amazing. There are no nurses in my family tree, but hats off to all nurses too! God bless you all!!
3. Chicken salad, egg salad, tuna salad...which would you go for if all three were on the menu? On bread or a bed of lettuce? If you answered bread, what kind of bread would make it the perfect sandwich?

Good golly, I like all three and it really would depend on my mood at the moment to choose which I like best. Any of those on a croissant would be lovely.
4. Do you have a desk? Is it organized? If so, share your secret to keeping it that way. If you don't have a desk, where in your home do you take care of family paperwork and business? Where do you normally sit to blog?

I have a desk at work, but not at home anymore. Yes, my desk is organized and when I had one at home it was also organized. I don't have a secret to keeping it organized, but it is the only way I can function. I am an organized person. I take care of the home finances (and those at work). Joe is a CPA but doesn't like "bookkeeping" so it falls to me. I don't mind...it's pretty much how I roll. I sit in the living room with my laptop on my lap while watching TV with Joe. He is used to me multi-tasking. If I don't have a computer on my lap, I have a magazine or catalog open on my lap.
5. When I was nine years old....

I got a season pass to the local swimming pool (it cost my grandma $18.00!!) and would ride my bike to the pool by myself and spend several hours there. Back then, kids were pretty safe being out alone. Now it's hard to imagine being allowed to ride a bike alone to the swimming pool. It was a good 4-5 miles away. Amazing. By the way, the swimming pool pass was my "prize" for not sucking my thumb anymore....at 9 years old.

I was buying some greeting cards today and it struck me that this is the first year I've not had to buy a Mother's Day card for anyone. My grandma was the last to go and we lost her just a few months ago. Made me a little sad.
I would like to ask my prayer partners here to please offer a prayer for my dear friend, Teena. She is having surgery today, to repair a hernia that has already been repaired once. Thanks so much!!
Thanks again to Joyce!! Thanks for your visit! Happy Wednesday. Peace & hugs!!

I loved your answers...love what a wonderful MOM you are to your sons and their families. Your hubby was blessed to find you...and I can tell that your sons feel the same way. I love that you had such a great childhood and wonderful mother who loved to sing! These memories are what have molded us into the people we are today...and it's good to remember those happy days. I will be praying for your friend Teena today. May the Lord be with her and her Dr., and may her recovery be smooth and the hernia finally repaired and healed for good! Have a blessed and happy day today! You've started my day with a smile, both here, and with your comment on my blog. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your prayers for Teena and for your friendship here!!
DeletePamela is right, you did have a great childhood and a wonderful mother. Happy Mothers' Day, Terri.
ReplyDeleteI was blessed that you were part of it, Karen! We have a precious friendship that started during childhood and I am so blessed to have you still in my life...more than 50 years. Love ya!
DeleteEnjoyed your Hodgepodge...keeping Teena in prayer. A Happy Mother's Day to you, Terri.
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda!
DeleteWhat a great story about Joe's wife. One of my cousin's who was about my age died three years ago, her husband got remarried on Sunday. One of his children is very bitter about it. So so sad. You are right, it is good that those boys were reassured by their mom. And your mom and my mom are the same age!
ReplyDeleteMom was born in 1930. We're "of an age" and so were our moms, then!
DeleteMy grandmother sang all the time around the house but she always sang old hymns. But on the weekends if there was an Elvis Pressley movie on late night TV, she and I were in front of it watching and tapping our feet. LOL Joe's first wife did a wonderful thing by telling the boys that. I've seen what the reverse is like and it isn't pretty. We were able to go places by ourselves, too when we were growing up. Not so much anymore though, you're right. I'll send up a prayer for your friend. Have a wonderful day!
ReplyDeleteI am blessed!! Thanks for the prayers for Teena!
DeleteWe loved riding our bikes to the pool too, and I think that was about the age we were allowed to go alone. I always had my sister with me, and sometimes my brother and his friends. There was a gigantic hill you had to ride down and sometimes somebody wiped out. Torture riding up on the trip home : ) Happy Mother's Day to you! That's a wonderful story about Joe's wife. Truly a gift.
ReplyDeleteYes, I am blessed in so many ways!!
DeletePrayers for Teena. Back 'then' we could pretty much be outside and not be scared or have to stay within 10 feet of our house. Loved the deal to get you to quit sucking your thumb...smart lady she was. Joe and the boys are blessed to have you in their life.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your prayers for Teena!
DeleteI haven't had to buy a Mother's Day card in 10 years and it still makes me sad. I never had kids so I have never had the privilege of the Mom experience.
ReplyDeleteI will certainly keep your friend Teena in my prayers.
Thanks for the prayers!!
DeleteI loved your story about the pool pass :) God bless grandmas! All of my children were thumb suckers, and my daughter was 9 before she stopped, as well. She got braces at age 19, too...
ReplyDeleteI'll add your friend to my prayers.
Kathy (Reflections)
I never got braces and that's why my two front teeth are behind all of my others...I pushed them back rather than pulling them forward. Thanks for the prayers for Teena!!
DeleteI have said a prayer for your friend Teena. I hope that all went well with her surgery and that she'll have a healthy recovery and not have to go through this again.
ReplyDeleteIt did seem much safer way back when we were kids. I would ride my bike all over our mill hill neighborhood without much worry. We knew which areas to avoid. When we moved, I still rode my bike everywhere, even back across a major highway to get back to the old neighborhood. It isn't safe in this town to let the kids even go out of the yard, though many do.
I am so sorry about the loss of your grandma and your mothers. We still have our mothers, but the last of our grandmas was my Granny Gunter who passed away in 2010. It was such a weird feeling to realize that I had no more grandparents. How does one ever get used to that?
Father's Day is very hard as both of ours are gone.
Music was a big part of my childhood, too, but I don't remember hearing my mama sing with the radio. I love to do that as long as no one is around to hear me. :)
Have a blessed day!
Lifting Teena in my prayers, Terri!
ReplyDeleteI'm touched that your boys' mother was so unselfish, only wanting the best for those she loved. Wow, that's Real Love.
My Tom makes the best egg salad every now and then, but I regularly buy Kroger's chicken pieces for salad and massage it with Marie's Bleu Cheese dressing and hard-boiled egg. Love tuna, but it's (ahem) aroma is a bit much in the office.
Cringe! I meant to write 'its' not 'it's'!
DeleteThanks for the prayers for Teena! I just heard from her husband that surgery went well and she is in ICU for the night. The power of prayer is amazing! I am so blessed and do not take it for granted. Hugs.
DeleteSweet memories of your mom and I'm glad your step-mothering was a good experience. I don't have a mother or grandmother still alive but our Daughter in law just became a mother so I'll look for a card for her. Praying right now that Teena keeps doing well and can get out of ICU soon. Visiting from Hodgepodge ~ The Happy Wonderer
ReplyDeleteThanks for your visit!!
DeleteGreat memories there, Teri. My mom loved to sing, too and she would stop to play the piano several times throughout the day. I love, absolutely love the way Joe's wife told her boys to trust their dad's judgment. You are very blessed to have the love of those young men. I'm with you on the food choices. Any of those on a croissant will do! How nice it was for children to be so much safer in our day. I'm glad to see above that your friend Teena's surgery went well and pray for a good recovery.
ReplyDeletePrayers for your friend. HOPE the surgery went well and she has a speedy recovery. Happy early Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteI'm so fortunate to still have my stepmother and Dick's stepmother. I feel sad that we don't get to see them more often while we still have them here on earth.
ReplyDeleteI'm the bookkeeper here at home too, ridiculously anal and detailed. But I like my method. I just wouldn't like to explain it to anyone!
I don't remember much about being 9 years old, other than being teacher's pet and getting baptized. (But the only reason I know I was 9 is because it's on the baptism certificate. Otherwise, I remember the occasion but not how old I was.) I'm glad Teena came through her surgery successfully!
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed your post Terri. I hope your friend's surgery went well.
ReplyDeleteEvery time i came to your blog, something interfered, so here i finally am. I love the dear memories of your mother, Terri. I hope my kids remember me singing too. I also absolutely love the fact that the boys' mom talked to them about their dad remarrying. What a kind and generous and loving mom she was too do that, and you're definitely a real mom with your constant love and care for them and the rest of your family. P.S. You didn't have to tell me that your desk would be organized. Somehow I knew that. 😃 Have a good evening Terri. xo
