Happy Hodgepodge Day!!

In this advance message from Joyce, she (and we all) will be taking Christmas week off from the Hodgepodge.  An excellent idea!  But we still have this week's Hodgepodge, so here goes.....

Hodgepodge Questions-Volume 248

Hello Hodgepodgers! One item of business before we move on...I'm declaring next week Christmas break in the Wednesday Hodgepodge, which means no link party here December 22/23rd.  The Hodgepodge will be back the following week, December 29/30th so we can wrap up the year and roll into 2016 together.

Now back to this week...answer on your own blog, then pop back here tomorrow to share answers with all of Santa's elves. See you there!

1. What's your biggest 'first world' problem?
That I have to go home from work and either cook dinner or decide where to go out to eat.  (snickering, but also feeling so blessed that I can make that decision)

2.  Each year Time Magazine names a 'Person of the Year', someone who has 'for better or worse...done the most to influence the events of the year.' It was recently announced they've named Angela Merkel Person of the Year for 2015. You can read more about this year's selection here. Your thoughts? If you were in charge, who would you declare Person of the Year?    Well, I am ashamed to say I didn't know who she was so had to look her up.  I guess she is worthy of the honor, now that I have learned more about her.  I'm just glad they didn't pick Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner. I haven't a clue about who I would declare as Person of the Year. I have so little respect for Hollywood personalities and politicians (yes, even the Republicans).

3. Do you have a nativity set in your home?  Yes, several actually.  If so share it's history and how you display the pieces.   I have a collectible Nativity that my mom gifted us with, piece by piece, year after year.  It is all white and I haven't put it out in several years because I'm afraid the cats will break a piece. I need a display case big enough to hold it, and I could display it all year.  We have a new outside set that we just got, with a spotlight on it; we have block letters that spell CHRIST and when they are put together have a Nativity scene painted on them; and we have a wood-carved Nativity that our grandson gave us (wood from Bethlehem) that we set out at Christmas.  We also have quite a few Nativity scene ornaments, one of which we bought at the Vatican when we were in Rome, back in 2007.

4.  Do you make an extra effort to give back in some way during the holiday season?  Yes.  How do you encourage those who need encouragement this time of year?   It is a hard time of year for many.  I well remember how hard it was to celebrate Christmas the year my dad died just two weeks before.  Emotional support; spiritual support with prayers; just listening; helping financially if possible, if that is the problem. It just all depends on who it is and what is the reason that encouragement is needed.  We all just need to be there for each other when times are hard.

5. Who is your favorite person to shop for?  Joe.  Why?  Because I know him!  We've lost touch with nieces and nephews and just do gift cards for them and for the grands.... I can buy stuff for Joe and even silly stocking stuffers are fun for him.

6. What's the last delicious thing you ate?   Well, the chili that I made Sunday and we finished Monday was good, but not my best.  We went to Longhorn Steakhouse for my birthday dinner last Friday, and it was pretty awful actually. We won't go back there for awhile.  After Mass on Saturday, we went to Panera Bread.  I had their yummy broccoli cheddar soup, which was delicious, and splurged with a chocolate croissant which was also delicious.

7. The best way to spread Christmas cheer is with smiles, hugs and cookies!!

8. Insert your own random thought here.  I LOVE doing Secret Santa with co-workers!  It is so much fun!  Of course, I love getting the cute little gifts, too, and trying to figure out who my Secret Santa is.  The big reveal will be at our staff Christmas party this Friday evening.  Do you, or have you ever done Secret Santa?

Thanks to Joyce for another great Hodgepodge!  Thanks to you for visiting today!!  Peace & hugs.

  1. Love Secret Santa---it has been awhile though...Longhorn was bad--- Wow....then again, we don't have one up here, but I remember the one in Tuscaloosa and it was super good.

Many holiday Blessings to you and Joe, Terri.

  2. I like all your Nativity sets - I only put out one this year, but they are my favorite Christmas decoration. How nice it would be to have one on display all year. The one in your yard sounds really neat.
I didn't know who the person of the year is either. I guess I should look it up, although the only interest I had in their person of the year was that they please not choose whatshisname. It was bad enough that he was chosen woman of the year by Vogue. Ugh!

Merry Christmas to you and Joe and your family!

  3. I made a nativity set years ago in ceramics and displayed it every year while the kids were still home. It now resides at Jennifer's house. I didnt have a clue who the woman of the year was, and still not sure, after reading about her. As long as Brucie didnt make it, I am happy. Happy Wednesday to you my friend.

  4. Of course, I know who Angela Merkel is. I suppose it's logical that most Americans wouldn't know, because I don't think you get a lot of news from Europe - a bit sad really. My nativity scene is tiny and missing one of the three kings, but there are lots of really elaborate ones to see and admire. El Escorial is famous for its life-size nativity scenes that the villagers put out in the streets.Have a good day.

  5. Longhorn back home was really good, but the one here is terrible. The staff make all the difference. Love the stories of your nativities.

  6. I was just thinking about "Secret Santa" earlier. We used to do that in our SS class at a former church we attended! Love your answers....I have a rather big collection of nativities. I might share them some day! Ms. Terri, your big heart shows through your answers....you're awesome! HOPE you have a great Wednesday.

  8. You might want to redo your link on Joyce's post - although you might get lots of people checking out who "y" is "our friend from Florida". I'm glad to have you as a friend and enjoyed your answers. I've done Secret Santa before but not this year.

  10. Years ago our women's group at church did a Secret Sister thing for an entire year. I think that's too long. A gift a month was expected!! I like the idea of Secret Santa better -- a much shorter commitment.

  11. Secret Santa sounds fun. We had our gift exchange in my ladies group today. We drew names and didn't tell whose name we drew until today. It was fun!

  12. Hi y : ) Ah yes, cooking dinner. That is often my first world problem too. Not the cooking so much as the deciding what to make. Wood from Bethlehem sounds like it would make a special nativity. I haven't done a Secret Santa exchange in a long time. Have fun with yours, and Merry Christmas to you and your family!
