Memory Monday...and more!

Memory Monday's subject for today is to write about our first job.  Well, I had lots of part time jobs, before getting a full time job.  I'll just list my first jobs....not very interesting.

Age 13, I had an 8-5 baby-sitting job for two 11 year olds, during the summer.  They lived a block away from my house. It was more play than work, but I did have to make lunch for them(us) and also had to vacuum once a week.  I think I got 50¢ an hour!

Age 14, my mom paid me to baby sit my siblings, during the summer (she worked full time), do the cleaning and get dinner started. I got $4.00 a week.

Age 15 & 16, I worked part time, during the summers, at Weldon's Ice Cream Factory. I don't remember how much I got paid, but loved getting tips!

Age 17 & 18, I worked part time, during the summers, at Motel 76, cleaning rooms.  I don't remember how much I was paid there, either.

After high school, I went to Columbus Business University, and worked part time at Glick's Furniture Store, in Columbus, Ohio.  During that time, I also got married.  When I graduated from school, I got a full time job (my first full time job with benefits) at Nationwide Insurance, in Columbus, OH. I did accounts receivable work for the Fire & Casualty Department.

Now, on to our trip to Sarasota, yesterday, and the Ringling Museum.  It was a glorious day! The weather was perfect, and we all enjoyed the grounds, the John & Mabel Ringling Mansion, the Art Museum, the Circus Museum and the restaurant and gift shop!  It was nice that there are golf carts to shuttle people from one place to another. Saved my knees!!  You can click on the photos to enlarge them.

(It was really windy, and my curls just go crazy in the wind...bad hair place!)

I had fantastic news from my sister, Tammy!  Bruce pulled himself up on the parallel bars, and also took six steps on his own!!  This is real progress!  Please keep him on your prayer lists!

Back to work for me, today.  Bah humbug!!  Thanks for stopping by!  Peace & love.

  2. So glad to hear the good news about Bruce. My first job was when I graduated from high school and I was 16; worked for Provident Life Ins. Co. I also worked for Nationwide Ins., my last job before full retirement. The pictures show what a good time you had with your friends. Your city is definitely beautiful and has many good places to visit.

  3. Sarasota is beautiful and The Ringling Museum has to be a really interesting place to visit. It's even better when your friends are with you. The bad hair place?? Wherever there is humidity, I have bad hair. (Another thing you and I have in common!) That's why I love visiting Colorado!!

I think back in our day the standard babysitting rate was 50 cents an hour. I was just happy to be earning some money.

Such good news about Bruce. Praying he continues to improve.

  4. As a junior in high school, I got $15 per week for babysitting 3 little kids, staying at their home all day, all week, while their mom went to work. Just the thought of it makes me shudder. lol And I remember getting $1.50 an hour at the turkey hatchery after being brave and asking them for a raise. Later I found out that minimum had just been raised to...$1.50 an hour.

Enjoyed your post. The Ringling place looks fantastic and interesting. And blue water that's not frozen. Where is that??? I am so pleased to hear about Bruce's progress. It is truly amazing, considering the beginning of the story.

  5. I started 'professional' babysitting at the same age, and probably got 50 cents the hour though I don't remember. I remember in those days parents warned their kids to behave or I would spank them. I'm sure I never had to because they were good.

Thanks for sharing your fun and happy there were golf carts to take you around. I'll bet anything your friends are happy that they're not up North at the moment! I know my sister is probably wishing she were still in Florida too.

  6. Gosh Terry, those were the days, weren't they! While you were at Weldons', I was dishing the ice cream at the Dairy Freeze on the Beach.

  7. I did a little babysitting for my nieces and nephews when I was 11 or 12. But then my first job was at a fast food place called, Rax (they don't exist anymore) when I was 14. We could work limited hours at that age and I stayed there for 4 years with some other waitressing jobs and cashier jobs mixed in there too. That museum is beautiful! Good to hear about Bruce!
